I should have my kit together today.  In keeping with my crazy lifestyle, instant coffee packets are going to weigh in heavily ☕☕⛽

I’m fond of a hot sauce myself, use Tabasco in cooking more than as a condiment but it’s absolutely essential in a Bloody Mary :drink:  and gave me a good excuse to make one ]

I knew this already, but still . . . . i don't generally eat instant foods, pot noodles etc, but browsing the website of a supermarket chain and looking at the ingredients the amount of salt in these products is shocking - i'm at that age where i need to pay attention to this smurf ! one day won't kill me but i would think long term consumption of these products probably isn't great for ones health  :dunno:

I think that is a fair assumption, eamo.....

( I was trying to chose between a few items at the store.....I went with the one that had the least sodium. Not that that was saying much! )

Well.....my 'finalized GSMRE' got a little tweak.....

I thought the Snack Module had too many sweets, so I swapped out a piece of candy and replaced it with something healthier.

The healthier option has an extra 30 Kcal.   :-\

And I realized I had forgotten to add in the calories hiding in the Accessory pack in my first tabulation.

My new Kcal total is: 3676 Kcal's.  :o

I think I'm done adjusting it, but I'm going to wait until a bit closer to Storage Day before I post the new contents sheet, weight, and obligatory photo of the final GSMRE.  :tu:

Just in case....

Maybe we could counterpoint the challenge with an 'Eat Fresh' 24hr ration at a later date.

Mags, I'm not a certified nutritionist, but I did get a good night's sleep once.

I don't think dried oats and salt really constitutes 'fresh food'.

Just sayin'......

I've heard good things about the Aeropress.   :tu:

about 3/4 the size, everything fits into a mug other then that pretty much the same thing. but the fact it packs into the mug makes it handy for work.

No Tabasco....and no Crystal!

Everyone knows that when it come to second-string hot sauces, Crystal is way better than Texas Pete. And does Frank's even qualify as a hot sauce?
Never heard of Crystal, so I may need to look into that.
The Franks is only used for making wing sauce.

I believe that Frank's is the original sauce used in Buffalo Hot Wings (But I could be wrong.).

I read a little about Texas Pete's. I was surprised to learn that it is rated as being a bit spicier than Tabasco (contradicts my memory).

This has sparked my interest. I'll pick up a bottle of Texas Pete's next time I shop and re-try it--based on your advocacy, Sos.

I am fond of El Yucateco hot sauce and have a bottle of that in the fridge.  Definitely spicier than Tabasco!  :tu:

The Frank’s being the original Buffalo sauce would fit because it is the closest I have found in off the shelf and the only reason I have it.

It has been so long since I had Tabasco, I couldn’t say whether or not it is hotter than Texas Pete, just remember liking Pete more.

If you want hot that still has some flavor then you have to try one of the General’s.  They are made with 86% pepper.  The Danger Close is probably the hottest sauce I have ever tried and the Shock & Awe, which is still in my cupboard, is suppose to be even hotter.

Texas Pete and/or one of the YellowBird sauces will be in my GSMRE.

I've tried both the Yellow Bird Serrano and Habanero. Both are quite good. Thicker and 'fresher' the some traditional hot sauces.  :tu:

As a non meat eater this is proving an interesting challenge as fresh veg wouldn't be so fresh after a week sitting on a shelf and canned foods are too awkward really for an mre; a lot of the instant / low prep meals on sale seem to insist on having dead animal parts in them.

I know you can do it! ( I have an actual vegetarian MRE stashed away for future use.  ;)

If I were taking a veggie approach, I'd look for dried fruits and nuts. Instant beans, instant noodles. I didn't find any shelf-stable cheese on the market shelves, but I know it is out there (maybe I didn't look hard enough.). Around here there are pre-cooked, shelf stable pasta and rice options. Crackers and nut-butters would be great. Pretzels are another option. I'm using some freeze-dried eggs in mine--they are not strictly vegetarian (at least I think there is some sort of meat in them), but there are vegetarian options for freeze dried eggs. And I'd pack chocolate. All expeditions need chocolate.  :D

These sort of things are made with soy protein and don't taste bad. (Not too bad.) This one has been in and out of various packs, hunting vests, and fishing vests over the past few years. ( I keep one stashed away in case lunch isn't readily available.  :D ) The 'best by' date was 31 May 2019 (Just a coincidence that Storage Day is 31 May 2021!). I opened it and took a few bites. Tastes fine. Vitamin fortified, but fine. Had to stop myself from eating more of it because I just had lunch  a couple of hours ago.

oh definitely, i have no doubts - i have plenty of camping meals that are veggie and some army veg mre's but they don't fit the spirit of the challenge.

worse case Mags has promised me a berth on the U-Boat and i can have salty porridge sans salt.

I know some freeze dried meal companies make vegetarian meals.  I know Mountain House has some.  Some stores around me also have freeze dried peas or other vegetables that you can get in bags.  Nutrition bars or shakes may be another option, which many stores regularly carry now, but you would need to research to know which are actually vegetarian.

I have some shelf stable cheese that I will be including in my meal.  I also some shelf stable Laughing Cow at the grocery store today, that I hadn’t seen before.  The expiration date was too close or I would have gotten some.

You won't believe it, but looking at the ingredients of some instand noodles (from LIDL) with chicken flavour, there actually isn't any chicken in it  :dunno:

The only meat I eat since about 7 years is some fish every once in a while.
