I know some freeze dried meal companies make vegetarian meals.  I know Mountain House has some.  Some stores around me also have freeze dried peas or other vegetables that you can get in bags.  Nutrition bars or shakes may be another option, which many stores regularly carry now, but you would need to research to know which are actually vegetarian.

yeah the camping type meals are available but i'd consider them speSmurfpillst, not what you'd typically get in a supermarket or convenience store - while they don't seem to be specifically excluded i think using them would go against the spirit of the challenge ?

Nix you might clarify ?  :dunno:

You won't believe it, but looking at the ingredients of some instand noodles (from LIDL) with chicken flavour, there actually isn't any chicken in it  :dunno:

yeah i think there was something about the meals been appetising

I have used some available here. I haven't seen any vege MREs though.

Irish army has vegetarian options in their meal packs

I'm sure that'll work....as long as you aren't packing too much coffee.......

Good question.  :tu:

I think it would be more fun for each of us to 'reveal' our GSMRE contents as we use them on "Chow Day". DO post a photo of your completed GSMRE on "Storage Day", 31 May, or before. But you don't need to post photos of the full contents until "Chow Day". I plan on doing a photo or two for each meal or snack.

One of the interesting things about eating an MRE is that, unless you've had that specific MRE a couple times before, you don't quite know what you'll get. I always found there was a little sense of anticipation when opening an MRE. Would there be a little bottle of Tabasco?  These days the question is more like, "Will there be a packet of instant coffee....."

(For those who haven't had a late-model MRE, many do not have instant coffee! How can we win any battles with only a handful of caffeinated troops? )

Another size comparison, the real MRE is about one-half the size of my GSMRE. Of course, my GSMRE provides for a full 24 hours of food...and is guaranteed to have coffee.   :D

(Image removed from quote.)

While I will wait to provide photos of the exact contents until Chow Day, I did make up a 'contents sheet':

(Image removed from quote.)

As you can see, I made myself the Accessory pack that I wished I had gotten with my MREs. If I say so myself, my accessory packet is a grunt's dream compared to the meagre accessory packets now found in MRE's. Nevertheless, there is nothing in my Accessory pack that isn't found in some country's issued rations.

Three (3) MRE's, the usual 24-hour ration, provides roughly 3600 Kcal.

My GSMRE provides 3596 Kcal. So I guess that makes it a diet MRE.

I didn't intend to match three (3) US MRE's calorie for calorie, it just happened to work out that way. I find that curious.

Inspired by Sea monster, I calculated the macro-nutrient content of my modules:

Breakfast:    794 Kcal      37g Protein     88g Carbs      34g Fats
Lunch:          882 Kcal      20g Protein     74g Carbs      52g Fats
Supper:        978 Kcal      32g Protein     142g Carbs     31g Fats
Snack:         902 Kcal      19g Protein     152g Carbs     13g Fats

Total:         3596 Kcal      108g Protein     456g Carbs     130g Fats

Again, somewhat curiously, my protein and carb content isn't that far off US military targets.

Just catching up with the thread and see this!
Wow, this is legit! :o

Despite our household’s love of hot sauce, Tabasco doesn’t even make it into the house.

(Image removed from quote.)
That isn’t even all of them.
I remembered I used to joke with some of my SE Asian classmate that they have 'tongue of steel'...after see this, I am not so sure anymore.

I’m fond of a hot sauce myself, use Tabasco in cooking more than as a condiment but it’s absolutely essential in a Bloody Mary :drink:  and gave me a good excuse to make one

(Image removed from quote.)

Just wanna confirm with everyone--we are now amassing whatever we could lay our hands on and assemble a GSMRE, upon the last week of May we will store the 1 day food package for a week, and consume everything on Jun 1, right? :pok:

My go-to used to be Mountain House Freeze Dried food, but after reading some of the posts here, I think I need to do some extensive research and up my game! :ahhh

I went treasure hunting today in a local 'dollar' shop, basically you will find all sort of Gas station/7-11/Truck stop, popularly seen in Asia:

The variety and colors are so disorienting, I felt like I must have sent an hour getting lost in that shop.
Finally, I walked away with various Japanese instant noodles, fish sausage and shrimp cracker...and I am just getting started.

And remember, for Chow Day, 05 June, all your food and beverages must come from your MRE!   :D

Eams -- I agree with you. Exclusively using freeze dried, prepared meals wouldn't fully meet the spirit of the event. Actually, it might be harder to assemble a full 2400 Kcal from three freeze dried meals than one might think. While many campers ad backpackers use freeze dried meals as the basis for their backwoods diet, I think they also augment those meals with traditional snacks, too. No one climbs Everest without chocolate....or cheese...or GORP....or Sherpa Tea.

Personally, I find that freeze dried meals become a bit boring after a couple of days.

The GSMRE is a chance to get creative and maybe even develop a little sense of self-reliance, as well as have some fun. However, everyone is free to create and consume a GSMRE according to his or her preferences. The rules DO permit freeze dried meals. I've stashed a meal of freeze dried eggs in my GSMRE just to make the point and share in that hilarity.

DO pack and store a minimum of 2400 Kcal from 31 May until 05 June when MTo sits down to a global 'MRE feast'. And, if you rely on freeze dried meals, DO pack a bottle of hot sauce. You'll thank me later!  :D

Before I stashed the freeze-dried eggs in me GSMRE as a breakfast option, I was planning on some leftover oats that I had found in the bilge of Mags' U-Boat during a tour he graciously gave me. ( Actually, I think he was trying to press-gang me into service. Fortunately, he became distracted by one of the other crew trying to squeeze out through torpedo tube #4 and I was able to take my leave with some 'souvenir oats'. ) Instant oats seem to be get featured in backwoods meals around the world. I half-think that the instant oat industry (aka 'Big Oat') is supported by and large by outdoorsy types and campers.

You are absolutely correct about freeze dried meals and calories.  I am planning dinner to be a freeze dried meal and an entire 2.5 serving pouch is less than 1000 calories.  I’m thinking I may split the pack and try part of it using a solar soaking bag I have and the rest cooked traditionally.

Everything else a mix of different foods.

Oats are definitely a staple and will be part of my breakfast as well.    And I’ve even seen the single serve packets for sale at gas stations.  Oatmeal is just such a quick and easy way to get a quick hot nutritious meal.   Place it packs down to be fairly small and light.  Plus it is easy to add different flavors to help prevent it from getting boring.

It became a staple of my diet when I discovered, high cholesterol runs in my family and oats help lower cholesterol.

Although you are correct that freeze-dried meals are not as readily available at typical supermarkets or convenience stores, around me they have become more easy to come by.  I have seen a couple different brands at Walmarts and even on occasion (usually around  hurricane season) at the standard grocery.  I have also seen some Mountain House meals at gas station/MiniMart but those were Navy-Marine, so I don’t think that really counts

Every time I go to the lunchroom, everyone comes with KFC, McDonalds, pizzas, beautiful noodles, awesome rice, bagels, muffins, doughnuts, donuts, American chips, British chips, chocolate, cookies, cakes, and I start crying from the inside.

A coworker gave me a pack of chocolate muffins and I could not say no, so I in turn gave them to a friend without even opening the pack.

To keep the challenge somewhat uniform (no pun intended), there are some DO’s and DON’T’s to be observed:

• DO be sure the food in your GSMRE contains a minimum caloric value of 2400 Kcal (There is solid military reasoning behind this number). 3000 - 3700 Kcal is closer to the US military standard for calories in temperate climates.

• While 2400 Kcal is our minimum, DO add extra calories if you like—if you will be working or camping outside in a cold weather environment, you may wish to assemble a ration of 4000-5000 Kcal. Antarctic trekkers aim for 7000 Kcal per day.

PSA
For us metric folks:
2400 Kcal = 10000 kJ
3000 Kcal = 12500 kJ
3700 Kcal = 15500 kJ
4000 Kcal = 16700 kJ
5000 Kcal = 21000 kJ
7000 Kcal = 29000 kJ
(These are rounded)

So, just in case someone thinks we'll eat for four people, let's be mindful of what each one is using.

My Keto MRE would be ready, but I am having trouble sourcing some items. I am ok calorie-wise, but I don't want my items to be canned meat and jerky. Ideally, I would have single portion  packets of mayo, peanuts, butter, peanut butter, maybe an omelette, dried tomatoes, etc. Tough to get those, so I'll have to check more places and see. If I can't tick any of those boxes, it'll be a boring MRE. Not terrible, still keto, ok calorie-wise, but a bit boring.

Can we source items from bulk containers and pack single portions ourselves? I could pack a portion of pistachios at least.

I still have time, though. I'll go to more places and find as much non-meat keto stuff for this, and hopefully tick more boxes.  I spend two hours in one place looking at the macros of about a hundred items.  :salute:

Quite true on the Freeze dried food, that used to be the only thing I eat on multiple hiking/camping trips, but even though they are filling, somehow the calories are not enough.  I guess that's part reason why many thru hikers always supplement their freeze dried meal with olive oil or other food, just to boost up their calories intake, especially for the high, cold mountainous section.

Yes. DO ensure the food is shelf-stable and will survive the storage period. DO practice safe food handling practices. But, yes, you can include repackaged bulk foods. Try to measure any such food so that you know how many calories/joules/energies you've got.   ;)
