The layout of all the food/drink/soup/snacks for the challenge, it's really way more food than I usually consume nowadays.  But it would serve me well for a car camping trip with the purpose to do a kinda strenuous 10-15 miles mountainous hiking(1000-1500+m elevation gain and loss) in semi-cold weather(12C 54F).  Even then, I probably would only consume 70% of this amount of food.

Most food can be easily acquired in gas station/food store/supermarket locally.  The real interesting piece is the HaiDeLao Tomato Beef Hotpot with self heating pad.  All it needs is some cold water and within 15min, a piping hotpot meal is ready in front of me.  I love the idea since it doesn't even require water boiling or gas stove, but the weight is surely the penalty for this piece.

Fitted into a 35L Sea to Summit lightweight stuff bag(this is usually the 'liner' for my hiking backpack)

The bag itself is 200g, so a total of 2.2kg for food.  Considering all the packaging and the self heating pad, it's really is only meant for car camping/emergency car ration.

All sealed and ready for action in about a week time

3774 Kcal in total

2x chilli garlic fish sausage.   35 kcal ea
1x Missing Pork salt and garlic flavor noodle 741 kcal

Dinner     77 + 220 + 46 + 750 = 1093 kcal

1x  black bean sea eel can food.  220kcal
1x d'aucy canned beetroot 46 kcal

Wow!  Great array of foods.

A side note: the Israeli military field ration, 'Manat Krav', is basically a box of canned foods. It usually contains canned tuna, halva, olives, crackers, and canned corn. When I saw your canned corn and sea eel, I instantly thought of the legendary Manat Krav.   :D

Good answer(s).  :tu:

I'm guessing too that even if someone well-versed in keto could do fine on a keto MRE the military wouldn't be interested in taking any chances.

My understanding is that since Ketones are an alternative fuel source, it's probably not the best for much more than sitting on the couch awaiting your next carbohydrate-rich meal.   There's a lot of to-and-fro in the exercise and nutrition literature about it being a purely backup source for the brain to function, vs some sort of highly efficient fuel source for the whole body. Outcomes research with body function overall seems to show that ketones don't offer more energy than is required to sustain life (for as long as the ketones are still there).  So my take on it is, a ketogenic diet will never be good for a soldier,

Indeed, as Nix correctly points out,,,, Diabetics who are in a crisis and not able to use their glucose due to critical insulin deficiency, and are in Diabetic Keto Acidosis, (where only Ketones are being produced and used), are often hypothermic as a result.

Right. After much research, I have finally gathered together what we on the U Boat consider to be the perfect blend of taste, energy, weight and scrumptiousness to survive, nay, thrive, for 24 hours.

Thanks to this, I did learn something new and gonna look them up!

I took a little bit of inspiration from the WW rations, where they tend to be canned food and the pack of chocolate cigarette is a shout to the past.

I suck at running but did often admire those who can, one thing I did read about is the Tarahumara tribe described in Christopher McDougall's book 'Born to run'--and IIRC, most of their diet is 95%+ carbs, and I think in a soldier's prospective, there maybe some resemblance there and that's part reason why I have put so much carb on the menu too.

:D To be honest that's all you really need for 1 day, i wouldn't want to go camping with you but that will work fine :tu:

I need to get my finger out, all i have added is a tin of tuna and a pack of biscuit things, i hope i can get to the shop before the 30th or i'm going to be very grumpy from 4PM onwards on Chow day

2x Pocari sweat  287kcal  (diluted with 1L of water with each packet)

I really want to know what a Pocari is now, and more importantly how they collect it

Wow!   :ahhh

I see you have loosened the purse strings and gone all out for fresh oats and commercial salt. None of that nasty stuff you scrape off the uniforms after a long watch. The crew must really be looking forward to Chow Day!

Ah! I'm glad you fell for the old 'commercial' ploy (as if).
I found the pot in an old chemical waste bin, cleaned the glowing acid stuff off it and hey presto! You'd never know! I've filled it with some salt crust from around the lavvy outlet. Genius. Free salt!

Of course we all share in the goodness. It's a workers paradise here and woe betide anyone who says different.

Oooh....it's like some Post-Apocalyptic thriller.

And I wouldn't count Medical Bill out. From my limited experience with him, he seems to be remarkably tenacious and durable.

No doubt. But now he knows too much. Can't have him coming back home and fermenting discontent with wild tales of the outdoors.

That's a 16 year old box I found on the beach after a chemical spill we were investigating to see if we could get any freebies.
The oats contained within may be even older. I just keep filling the box with oats from the bilge because brand name food makes the crew feel special. They can scarcely believe they are being treated to actual Saxa salt (they're not, its toilet salt really) but you can't put a price on happiness as my old gaffer used to say.

Mags, while I respect your spartan diet, monastic attitudes, and dedication to up-cycling natural resources, I feel that your MRE doesn't fully meet the requirements of this challenge.

You've done well in terms of it being small and compact. It would seem to be easily man-portable.

And the relatively inexpensive choices you've made are certainly in keeping with our objectives.

It is true that oats can be eaten uncooked. As can salt. However, your limited selections don't really seem to meet the ideal of a "Meal Ready to Eat" to sustain life for 24-hours.

I think we were looking for a ration that would sustain a person for 24-hours and encourage the diner to actually eat it. Remember that part of the challenge in this challenge is designing a ration that encourages consumption, without use of a motivational tool. Three servings of salty porridge, without threat of a shovel to the head, does not appear to entice the appetite of pique a diner's interest in my experience (And I do love oatmeal, be assured.).

Not to appear excessively picky here, but I'm not sure that box of oats contains 2400 Kcal of energy either.

Is there any chance that you might put a bit more effort into diversifying and expanding your GSMRE?

Perhaps a visit to an actual service station, one frequented by real humans, might serve as a jumping off point and spark your imagination.

Just thinking out loud here.   :tu:

Borg, you know how gladiators' sweats were collected by a strigil, and were highly sought after commodity in ancient Rome?

Well, Pocari has nothing to do with that...

But they do have some of the best ad in sport drink for Japan(this is made in one shot, pretty amazing)

About small portions of shelf stable cheese...

It's called "Polenguinho".
This small square of cheese can be found here easily. (Good until september of 2021 without refrigeration, at room temperature).
I have memories of eat this since childhood (Not a long time being a Clone).

And I must say, this small cheese is good!
