I may have given the wrong impression: the Svea is fun to operate. Probably like bungee jumping or cliff diving.

 Weeeeeeeeeeee.........!

Exactly the stuff my Scout master would like to hear over a Christmas gift. >:D

Brazilian MRE comes with simple white plastic knife, fork and spoon.
The mess kit is much better.(Image removed from quote.)

That's one handsome looking set! :tu:

Nice start comis
Good job  :tu:

I was just going to use this old East German army set but remembered all i really have is noodles so will use a spork instead, i could use chopsticks but it would take me hours to eat dinner with those so spork it is, the tuna comes with a plastic fork which will save on the washing up  :tu:

(Image removed from quote.)
I am curious to see the Army version spork, I read somewhere that it is rather important to have a big o' spoon with you at all times in Army, so you could dip in first and hard whenever you see chow! :D

Complete GSMRE Contents and info

0830 - Breakfast
Coffee
Peanut butter cups
Cocoa covered almonds
Protein bar
(Image removed from quote.)

Breakfast was ok for the most part.
I like the cookie dough flavour protein bar. This is a semi-sweet, dense bar, with quite a few chocolate chips. The (sugarless) chocolate chips is just sweet enough. It's the best flavour out of the five that have 4g of carbs. There are five more flavours that have 5g of carbs per bar, so I did not get any of those. To be honest, I won't get any more bars period. Why get those for 4g of carbs per bar, or 5g for some bars, when you can get peanut butter cups for the same calories and just 1g of carbs?

Speaking of, the peanut butter cups were fantastic. I am amazed at how good they taste, plus they are only 1g of carbs for two. Win-win. No wonder they were sold out in half a dozen shops I checked. And I added four shops to the "out of stock" list. :D

I really do not like how almonds taste. Cover them with whatever you want, I still do not like them. I only got them because they were 30g total, and good enough for keto, and to add some variety to my MRE. The cocoa coating helped so these were not terrible.

Coffee was ok considering I could not have sugar. I could have searched for a keto alternative but I am not a coffee drinker so I did not bother. I should have, because it was rather weak and bitter.
I was so proud that my cutlery set had a coffee stirrer. But there is nothing in the coffee to stir in the first place.
(Image removed from quote.)

Interesting breakfast.  Glad you found some keto items that were tasty.

Chow day 08:05

I usually don't wake up that early on a Saturday, but luckily I need to be up for an errand this morning so more time to eat more food!

Instant noodle really is a very common routine to be honest, but this particular one is definitely more calories packing than others.  It contains a small slab of butter(!) to give it a more intense favor, too bad I down that too quickly but it really is kinda yummy... :D

The UCC coffee package is kinda convinient, it self contains the coffee/sugar/creamer/cups and even the stirring sticks!  But unlike the good gourmet stuff they usually sell, this does remind me of those really cheap gas station coffee which the sole purpose of existence is just to wake you up.

I also cracked open a big packet of Pocari Sweat and mix it with a liter of cold water.  This sport drink is really best if served cold, but bearable in hot weather if you are thirsty enough.  It has an intense sweet flavor with a mild tangy and bitter taste like a grape fruit juice.  So I gonna sip on these thru out the day, and make it my water replacement.
It sounds like the food is good, but the beverages leave a lot to be desired.

:ahhh  You guys are off to a fabulous start!   :ahhh

I like almonds so I'm betting those would have worked well for me, RP. Mrs Nix liked the sounds of peanut butter cups for breakfast......

I'd devour that Red Chili Salami--that's my kinda snack!  :tu:

Sorry about the coffee, comis......at least your GSMRE contained some tasty noodles. ( Not a typical breakfast here....and I'm wondering why not.....? )

I forgot, my chosen utensil for the Chow Day is the "Spork" issued to my granddad in the Continuation War in 1942..

It's not really a spork, it's called "spoon-fork mystery" in finnish, or just luha, short for "lusikka-haarukka"  :D

1145 - Snack
Biltong

Breakfast was not that big, and consisted only of sweets, so I felt a little hungry and in the mood for something savoury. The biltong is ok. A good amount of it for a quick pick-me-up, not salty, not spicy. Kind of a sweet aftertaste. A little dry, but that's the point I guess. It tastes like proper meat, and it has a shelf life of a year, so it's definitely a good option for MREs and emergency food. And it is packaged nicely, in a flat envelope that is somewhat thick and able to survive a bumpy ride in a bag with other stuff.

Proper MRE food there.  :tu:

In US MRE's it gets called "Kippered Beef Snack"...or something like that. Might be "Beef, Kippered."

Mine too.  I had looked at our local supermarket for something similar, but all were too big for one person and said “refrigerate after opening”.

1430 - Lunch
Chicken can
Cheddar
Chocolate
Tea

Everything was tasty.
The chicken is nice. Maybe a bit bland, but nothing a little pepper cannot fix. A little mushy, but soft. It could be heated, but I do not mind it cold.

The cheddar block was much better than I expected for shelf stable cheese. It was nice and soft, almost like a more solid cream cheese. I would have preferred a smaller block, maybe 100-120g, but this was fine. I left some for later. I wish I had thought of including a little sheet of tin foil, to better pack the leftover cheese. But it has a box so it'll do for a few more hours.

The chocolate is excellent. Dark chocolate is a bit bitter, and this one is too, and while noticeable, it is still the familiar taste we all love. Plus a hint of mint which goes well with chocolate I think. And only 2.1 grams of carbs per unit.

Tea was fine. I would not mind a little sugar or honey in it, but that'll have to wait.

The ST300 was on stand-by duty, in case it had to assist with the cheese or cans, but the plastic knife and ring-pull did not fail.

1630 - Snack
Salami
More cheddar

The salami stick was a bit salty and spicy. Dry, but greasy at the same time. I really do not mind it, but it is not that good of an option to be honest. For 15 grams, it has too many calories, too many carbs, and is expensive. At least it lasts a few months on the shelf and tastes fine.
The cheddar went nicely with the salami. If only I had some pickles and a few olives.

Chow Day 1334

Got back from my errands kinda late, so I was actually hungry and can't hardly wait to crack open the food bag.
Lunch is another larger pack of instant noodle, with a can of beet root, another spicy garlic sausage and a pack of Mocha cigarette.

The sausage usually wrapped tightly inside a vacuum seal, and one cool trick to open it with a scissors or knife, is to keep twisting it into two halves--eventually the built up air pressure will help burst it open somewhere in the middle.

The noodle was sesame pepper flavor, and it was rather decent.  The can of beet root has a very mild acidity that goes surprisingly well with the noodle.

The green box of cigarette was supposed to be the highlight of the lunch.  I kept thinking it was a mocha flavored chocolate 'cigarette', turned out I was flat wrong about it when I took my first bite into it.  It was actually mocha hard candy(to be honest, it didn't mention any 'chocolate' on the box), so after sipping it for a minute or two, I just lost interest and quitted "smoking" it.

Chow Day 0240
Time for a late night (early morning snack)

Ate about half the ice cream sandwich and munch on a little of the trail mix, but plenty left for later.  The Bulleit Bourbon will provide the nice night cap.

The Astronaut ice cream sandwich tastes better than the Mountain House.  Neither gives the truly delicious taste of ice cream but good tasting and better than no ice cream.

Did you have to melt the ice cream in mouth to make it taste like 'real' ice cream?  I have the Napoleon from Mountain House, and that's what I always do.

I tried the Bulleit Bourbon at a tasting a couple of years ago and I didn't care for it. I thought it was a little too peppery and had more back of the throat burn than I care for.

I cracked open the 1 gallon Ziploc bag for the first snack of the day, a chocolate Glucerna snack shake before bed.  140 calories, 7g protein, 3 g fiber. Having one before bed is good for maintaining one's blood sugar so it won't be too high or too low in the morning.  It was pretty good, but they are much better when they are served cold.

Thanks to your posts and pics about it :pok:   I hope it works

It'l work  :tu:  At first it might seem cumbersome but when you see what it can do and how versatile it is you will be glad of it, my small pack is i think 9 litres and it fits there no problem with the rest of my stuff, doesn't rattle either which is a plus, just remember all our lives we spent time shielding stoves from the wind, this is the opposite, point the vents to the wind and you will be drinking your tea in a couple of minutes  :tu:

Breakfast

Coffee with fruit biscuit thing which was actually ok and a couple of nut things that are a bit boring but i have a feeling i will be glad of them later, Pikkupuukko from Wood Jewel was the knife of choice, i love this little knife but i might have gnaw on the bone handle parts later if my food runs out  :tu:

Great start so far everyone!

Unable to handle a big meal until 10.30/111.00 am I went with a couple of nut bars with chocolate - Decadent as Steve1989 would say.

Tea with creamer is, to be honest, a chore. Probably tastes like heaven when you're up to your knees in mud, dodging bombs and mortar fire, but sat in the relative comfort of the U Boat, it just tastes wrong.

The National drink should contain real, full fat milk, so that's what I'm looking forward to getting back to on the morrow.

Also, if the crew knew I had special food on board, they would have my head. If you don't hear back from me at any time in the next 24 hours, consider me headless.

I remember similar things when i was a kid but these were cig shaped with a little red end on them to simulate the burning cig and came in a packet like the real ones, i think they banned them as they claimed it encouraged children to start smoking  :tu:
