Has Victorinox be bugged the liner lock ?
on: January 19, 2009, 07:56:42 PM
For a long time liner locks have been my least favoured locks . They are an easy design to screw up , can shift under "white knuckled " conditions , often fail 'spine whack ' tests etc etc .

I have , with the help of a buddy who spent a lot of time as a quality engineer given the lock on my Rescue tool and his two handed Fireman a good wringing out . Conclusion : In any reasonable force scenario , they aren't going anywhere .

Liner locks also have an annoying habit of being easy to inertially open , leading to "Gravity Knife type charges being laid ,( case in point the current blitz by NYPD ) . Bottom line , there aint no way these babys will flip open ! It's even hard to do a Spyderdrop on them .

Before you ask , I been bitten by Linerlocks , three times to be exact : FWIW by an Emerson , a Benchmade /Crawford Leopard , and by a Benchmade mini Deja Voo .

Yet another reason to fall in love with Victorinox products all over again .

Chris

What happened with liner locks and the NYPD?

I've never had a liner lock fail on me, although I rarely carry one.

For liner locks I only own two Waves, a Leatherman folder, and two Vic 111mm liner lock knives, and out of those I feel the Vic locks are the best.

From what I heard NYPD is going around confiscating knives (from independent stores even, straight into their own pocket, one cop even brought a "confiscated" knife back to the store owner for sharpening!) and charging people because they can gravity drop it open or something, but it's not new and has been happening for a few years.

I grew up in NYC. This has been going on since the 80s. Ive had 2 liner lock knives confiscated from me by the NYPD when I was about 19.

19 year olds should have everything confiscated, I wouldn't trust them with a pen!  :police:

That said, I've wondered where they draw the line for "gravity knife" as I can spyder drop my OHT and my lockback folder.

I try not to be a total tosser and do it whilst queuing at the bank however.
