What tools?
on: June 30, 2021, 02:18:43 AM
Hello everyone, I have a pocket knife of J.A.Henckels. As shown in the figure, what is the tool in the circle? Is it used to open a watch?

possibly, if the edge is not sharp.

It may also be a can opener or can hole puncher of some type.

Rudimentary can-opener - notch to go on edge of can (like on the 1890 Soldier CO) ???

Would make sense given the toolset (ie the original Officer's Knife)
How sharp is it?

The blade is not sharp. It is definitely not used for cutting. I have seen some vintage pocket knives have this tool configuration, but I still don't understand its purpose.

Definitely a can opener. I have several camping/scout knives with that exact can opener.
Actually a terrible design IMHO.

From the side it looks too thick to be a watch back plate opener.

It is most likely a can opener, as in Richs picture.

Those who said “can opener” are correct.  Just not a very good one.

How is that opener supposed to work?  Just stab the top of the can until you get it opened?

you use the side pin on the blade as a pivot point resting it on the side wall of the can, after you make the first opening I think.  Just turn and move, like a regular knife can opener .

I do not know if the pin will fit under the lip of the can, to work it that way instead

This type of can opener does work, but not as well as the old military P38. type.
Have two of them. One in old backpack, other in kitchen when crank can openers won't work.
Of course I could always use my good old Tinker.

Rich

RR/Marble's recently came out with two new Scout patterns with a modern hook can opener, but for many years, that was their only Scout. I never got why Case used that design well into the 1960s, and why RR copied it. Most American manufacturers had introduced the "hook" style by the end of WWII; and that style had been updated TWICE! (starting in the 1930s!) on the British Army/Navy knives by the 1950s. That design with Sheffield companies and other manufacturers went the way of the dodo before WWII. Yet Case, and their Canadian subsidiary didn't quit using it until the "dot" era.

I've used that style can opener before--as a really big awl. I had to put some drain holes in a feed trough and a 1950s era Case/Metal Stampings Canadian Navy Knife was the only knife and tool on me at the time.

Why Marbles didn't put a bail on the five blade scout (has a Phillips) I don't know. Would have made it actually useful.  >:(
I'm sticking with my 30 y.o. TINKER.
