I really do like this tool. When I have tasks that require the super heavy duty bulkiness it performs admirably. However as a day-to-day tool it's overly heavy and... I miss the one-hand opening pliers way more than I thought I would. It's why I would never really seriously carry a leatherman long term. As much as I like the feel of the surge and wave, I need pliers far more often than I need blades.  I like Gerbers and SOGs because they can be opened with the flick of a wrist, and closed just as easily.

When it comes to heavy-duty tasks though, nothing quite works like this. I'm impressed.

Charles.
Try the leatherman p2 or p4 they are one hand open. I’m with you I like pliers that open one handed

After having a hard time getting Canadian Tire to order me one, I now find them hanging on one of their display walls ready for sale. I had to get another one.

Barry, I've been thinking the same thing since these came out but I didn't want to buy another tool over $100 just for giggles.  50% off for the end of summer sale (with free shipping too) just made it too good to pass up and I wouldn't even have known about the sale if Steve hadn't mentioned it.

My BO arrived yesterday (even though I put on deodorant). No use yet, but it's not as unwieldy as I expected. It's actually a smidge shorter than the Center Drive, and while it's heaver, it's "boxy" in a way that makes it feel ok. It'll probably come live in the camper, where I wanted a broader pair of pliers anyway.  I did notice a fatal flaw, however. It's a multitool WITHOUT A BOTTLE OPENER!  :drink:

Just got mine and first impressions. First the good , lockup on the tools is solid. The screwdriver is pretty nice and so is the knife . Nice even grinds and sharp. The Saw is pretty thick and reminds me of the tooth design on SOG's tools. Leatherman's design is much better. Now the Bad, the file is worthless. I don't think it will even remove material on soft wood on the fine side. The teeth are unevenly stamped into the file and are almost nonexistent on the fine side. The rough side is marginally better. The chisel tip is good though. Next the pliers, they are very loose and the handles have a bit of play.

It's too bad about the file and maybe I got a bad one. I'm curious what other people's impression of the file is ?

I ordered one from the sale on the website, sir, and will report back in due course.  Btw, the Dual Force went from 50% off to 40% off today - after I ordered.

I recall one Youtube reviewer - I cannot recall which one - who gave the Dual Force some longer term, harder usage.  He found that the teeth on the plier seemed softish, and rounded over with time making it less grippy.  Something to watch for.  Of course, I'm not a diesel mechanic so none of my MTs really receive hard use.

But I am happy to be getting one and look forward to it.

Fine looking pics, Commander Poncho.  I went with the other coloration, but they both look pretty dang good.

Thanks Alan and powernoodle  :hatsoff:

I had also noticed that the tool went from 50% to 40% off now :ahhh still a great deal but glad I got mine when I did :woohoo:

Steve, I had mostly been focusing on the pliers (sad to hear they may be a softer metal pn  ) but since you said that about the file, I checked mine  :ahhh

The single cut side is fine and seems like it will work as it should :salute: but the double cut side  (having the pattern cut in fine :salute: ) is not aggressive at all :-\ it doesn't seem like it would cut much :dunno: I did try it on my fingernails and it did work on those, so maybe soft material on mine but the pattern is very shallow as you said

I do also agree about the saw, seems like a SOG or Bear and Son's file instead of a Gerber  but SOGs saws are thinner and the Bear and Son is as thick but has more aggressive teeth :D so perhaps a mix of both

I got my dual force last week.  Quick impression, I like it, but I'm not in love with it. I have not used it for any task yet. & The file does not inspire confidence in me.

Initial impressions -

She's a big girl, who never missed a meal.  Build quality is standard Gerber, which means Chinese flavor that is passable - in line with current SOG production - but far below Leatherman and light years below Victorinox.  Still, Gerber MTs have always worked for me over the years and I have no complaint in that regard.

The teeth on the plier seem slickish to the touch, but I have not cranked down on anything yet.  I suspect that they are adequately grippy, but not like a pit bull on a squishy toy.  When using the plier, the handles swing back and forth freely.  I like this, as you don't have to push the handles apart with your fingers.

The in-line driver is pretty cool, and looks like a more ergonomic experience than what you will find from any other maker.  While the slip jaw plier is supposed to be the star of the show, for me its the center-drive screwdriver.  It is truly innovative, though it does add bulk to the MT when stowed away.  It has a tiny raised portion that provides friction retention with the frame in the closed position.

The main blade seems pretty sharp.  As I test it for flex or lateral movement, the whole MT creaks and bends just a little, like the deck of a pirate ship on rough seas.

The saw is thick and stout, with sharp teeth that cut on the draw.

The file is also beefy, with a broad, sharp chisel.  The cross-cut side I give about a 4/10 for bite, and the single cut side gets a 0/10.  It leaves my thumb nail unmolested, and is not really a file at all.  It is beyond my understanding how Gerber can design something like this when they know full well it doesn't work. [Same with current SOGs.  I had one SOG with an absolutely smooth "file"].  Detention with Professor Snape for that one, Gerber.

The fold-out bit holders are a little hokey, and I would be fine if they weren't there.  The 3/16" flat bit is a little too small, IMO, though the magnetic retention is nice.  It comes with #1 and #2 phillips.

The sheath is about a 5/10, also Chinese made.  Not the quality of a similar Leatherman sheath.  It is passable, and looks like it might last several months for a workin' man.  The Dual Force in its sheath may be too big and heavy for most folks to carry daily.

Now all of this is just me sitting here playing with it, without using it to tear down a jet engine or cut my way through Fangorn Forest.  Given everything, I'm good with the 50% off on Gerber's website making it $55.  That's about right for the Dual Force.  Had I paid $99.99 on Amazon Prime, or the MSRP of $109.99, I would feel that Gerber picked my pocket just a little.  But as somewhat of a Gerber fanboy despite its deficiencies, I'm happy to add this one to the arsenal.

I'm wearing my Dual-Force and I don't like the sheath.  In typical Gerber fashion they made the sheath so it can be worn vertical or horizontal but in so doing they made it so that it rides higher than it would if it was just for vertical carry.  Therefore, the top of the sheath is poking me in my back fat when I sit down.  If the horizontal loops weren't there the sheath could sit about an inch lower and wouldn't be poking and rubbing on my back fat.  Don't want to try horizontal carry as it would take up too much real estate on my belt.  Also, I tried the saw on a palm frond and it had a hard time cutting.  Might work better after some of the coating wears off.

I just sent them an email inquiring about a return for mine. I use a file a lot and I'm pretty disgusted by the quality of it. I'm also not impressed with the overall tool design. I'm not sure it would hold up to hard use .

Yeah, that's unfortunate Steve.  At least give us a real, bitey file that works.

I tried the saw on a palm frond and it had a hard time cutting.  Might work better after some of the coating wears off.

Mine did okay.  It hung up a fair amount, but for me its about on par with the saw on a Spirit which hung up an equal amount.

Well, mine arrived today  :mail: and, as previously stated, it's a bit of a chunkster  :ahhh

No uses yet but who knows what will present itself over the weekend  :dunno:

Still disappointing to see "Made in China" but for £63 ($79) I don't expect any different these days  ::)
They don't like it up 'em!
