Never heard of Lebanon Bologna. I assume it is a type of salami

Same here, but adding it to the shopping list.

DAY 19  I cut the handles off of a paper shopping bag because they look like good tinder.  Here's the Signal cutting them into smaller bits.

DAY 19 (Bonus Pic')

Just got back from my standing around thing (thankfully the rain stopped)

I couldn't carry a decent Combo edge as all, but one, of my tools are locking (UK carry laws)  ::)

Here's the Swiss+Tech with my Spartan, I need to have something useful even if not required  :dunno:

Thanks Surge

It is probably the cheapest knife that has appeared in this challenge. But it seems to be decent.

Honestly, I am wanting to buy one of those on Amazon.  They also come in a backlock version, and with Tanto or a drop point like yours.

I had no idea. I bought mine at Lowe's when they dropped the price to get rid of inventory.

I wish I didn't go looking on Amazon after reading your response. I see that Estwing has a cable splicing knife and I want it

Its just way too easy to wiggle your forefinger 3 times on Amazon and have a new knife end up on your porch in 2 or 3 days.

I’ll take it.  I do use my twig stove a couple times a week usually and fatwood is a nice way to help get it started.

I did not cut anything today with the Skeletool's combo edged blade, but I did cut a cable tie with the wire cutter and used the pliers to pull a staple out of a piece of wood.

  Would have been great to have you join us in our motley crew of half-plain folks. Get yourself a Skeletool or Signal and join us next year.  :pok:
Good idea!  Funny thing is the few first 'decent' knives I got are all combo edged, and I totally brought into the narrative where the serration would keep on cutting when everything becomes dull.  There is some degree of truth in that, but being a knife/tool enthusiast, it is not like I would be stranded on an island for years with no sharpening tool anytime soon.

It's one of these; $60,000 of your US dollars  :ahhh

The first few (decent and indecent) knives I got were combo edges too.  At the same time, the multitools had separate plain edge and serrated edge blades... Leatherman Supertool, Wave, and Gerber MP600.

I got a fair amount of use out of both blades on the multitools. Many times, there was the right tools for the job. But many times there wasn't. And with cutting, as with many things in life, you only get one chance. So I preferred not having to choose between blades, and happily used the CS Voyager that I started this challenge with, for many years.

It wasn't until I needed to use it for preparing tinder and kindling for a fire that the knife fell short. But, it was the American Tanto blade shape as much as the serrations - neither a heel, nor a belly. So I switched to plain edges.

If you look at sale statistics and focus groups, though, combo edges are still very popular - hence the choice by Leatherman and Victorinox to put a combo edge blade on their outdoor oriented knives. Indeed, all my friends still carry a combo edge over a few decades - SOG, DeWalt, Benchmade...

With 2/3 of the Challenge completed (arguably without having done the aforementioned outdoor activities) I can honestly say I haven't felt underprepared.

Day 20

Catching up on a missed post from yesterday

"Press here to open", they said
"Tear here", they said

Nothing doing. Used the Skeletool to cut the opening in the box without battering it.

Serrations aside, the modified Wharncliffe blade shape of the Skeletool..: similar to that of the Signal and the Benchmade 940 is really useful. I'm used to drop points like on a SAK, and had gone for that shape exclusively (even got a Folding Hunter with a drop point).  This shape is quite useful when doing detailed work with the tip.
