If I took.a 5.5 mile walk, I'd see noting but urban and suburban ugliness. Your views are much nicer! :tu:

That preserve is about a half hour from my house, but worth the drive.  8)

kamakiri - Day 12

Changed to a 1969 146fmaU Champion B knife for Day 11. Just mail call duty so far, but wanted to note that the only packages to come in for me were from Ukraine 🇺🇦. I really hope our SAK community, friends, family and vendors stay safe and prevail…by negotiation or otherwise.

That aside, this knife is a joy to use as it still sports the factory grinds and is one of the better early Champions I own that is not still in box.
….

I know many would almost automatically disagree that my knife with its bail/shackle could be produced in 1969. The real kicker to me is that if I’m wrong…it would be 1970!

Show content
Without getting into the fine little details on this one, I want to focus on what I believe is the error in the way many characteristics are dated. That source is that many incorrectly assume that an introduction of a new item (like the keyring) means the near instantaneous disappearance of the item being (eventually) replaced or superseded (in this case the bail/shackle). Fairly clear proof (to me) comes from knives with the ‘new’ style scissors and double-leaf spring are found in original condition with the bail. Dates for all three of these items are all over the place between ‘68 and ‘75…but it is my belief that they all actually converge upon 1970. End of the main line use of bails, existence of the new scissor and corresponding use of the double leaf scissor spring.

Show content
So says my detailed analysis. Proof comes from at least three separate production process changes. The fact that this particular knife has only one of these changes leads me to believe it is probably late 1969 or very early 1970, if I am wrong.

Day of Challenge / Knife used:
1. Original Black 1984
2. Champion Plus c. ‘09
3. 1974 Red w/o Nickel Silver Shield
4. 1967 Hoffritz Champion B
5. 1983 Hoffritz Champion C - 11258 Super Knife
6. 1965 Hoffritz Champion B
7. 1986 Champion C
8. 1978 Champion C
9. 1989 Champion C
10. 1978 Hoffritz - Stainless inlay
11. 1980 A&F black Champion 1 of 3
12. 1969 146fmaU Champion B

They are certainly the standard amongst the professionals, but I have a hard time with their pricing. Mine was gifted to me by my BBQ mentor when I placed right behind him in my first cookoff. For that event I used a $9.00 Walmart store brand thermometer, because that was all I could afford. I still have that one and use it quite often. Since I have both, I can attest that they are equal in actually reading temps, and speed in doing so. Of course an item's worth is subjective, but I am in full agreement with you on becoming a better cook. When you start cooking to temps, the finished product is much more consistent!

:tu:  My first one was gifted to me too. At first I didn’t use it much because I thought it was a bit of an extravagance…but I too found out about the consistency and control…far less memorization and guessing involved cooking meats of different thicknesses or requested temps.

I only bought a new one recently because the original one is well over 12 years old and it isn’t splash proof anymore…because I wasn’t the only one using it. Original still works, but gotta be careful cleaning it.

My experience with some cheaper thermometers was really bad. Not for accuracy, but time to read. Tested a couple directly against the Thermapen and they were just way too slow.

Day 12
No use today.  Don't forget to set your clocks forward tonight.
Just did ours…no SAK action needed for that. It’s a pain to do the watches that keep pretty good time. I wish we’d ditch DST.

Challenge of Champions Day 13

No uses so far today. The day has been focused on cookoff prep, which included making small wood chunks out of big wood chunks.

Yes and no. I'm basically a one man team, so I get to do it all. Show up on Friday, set up, unload, prep food, cook food overnight, turn in entry on Saturday morning, wash dishes and load back up,,,,, all on the sleep you last had on Thursday. Depending on the venue and distance from home, I will often have help from my wife and daughter. Friends like to come and hang out, but friends are hard to find when it's time to pay entry fee's.

The BBQ world ( at least in South Carolina ) is indeed a fun family group though. It's great when you get called on stage and receive a check. It's a terribly long ride home when you don't. We have one event we cook every year that is close to a Dairy Queen. Depending on the results we either go for a celebratory Blizzard,,, or a pity-party Blizzard. I have been on the stage for 35% of the event's I've competed in,,, which I think is pretty good when you figure I'm competing against multiple state champions at these events.

Day 12
No pics from yesterday because I was so busy helping my local robotics team, but the Champion got a brisk workout. I used the metal saw for the first time ever!

The robot’s new ball-shooter that we had just assembled had some 1/8” aluminum pieces that needed to be cut off, but the assembly was too big to fit the band saw and the pieces were awkwardly located for a hacksaw. So I whipped out the Champion and went to work with the metal saw. I’m honestly very impressed by its performance at cutting aluminum.

35% sounds good to me.  If you get closer to 100% it’s like time to go pro or go get another hobby.

Still got one more to do that needs a ladder. More of a Monday job.

AZ and HI. Two states I know of that don’t go this nonsense. Didn’t sleep much last night and compounded with DST, well…could feel better.

Aluminum is easy-peasy for these. Did a quick test on Titanium sheet and actually it did cut…but not willing to kill a saw just yet to find out how long it’ll last.

kamakiri - Day 13

Changed to a 146fmaU Champion B knife with TGS 1,000,000 inlayed for Day 13.  No uses so far…no mail and not feeling great.

I’m hesitating to publish my date estimate for this one. Mostly because it’s a bit of a crapshoot as I’ve found parts from several years on it and as I’ve said before that advertising knives can get old parts…but I believe this one takes the cake, with parts that span up to 6, maybe 7 years.  Obviously, then produced *some time* after the very latest part.

Pictured with a mini-me version in 58mm.

Day of Challenge / Knife used:
1. Original Black 1984
2. Champion Plus c. ‘09

7. 1986 Champion C
8. 1978 Champion C
9. 1989 Champion C
10. 1978 Hoffritz - Stainless inlay
11. 1980 A&F black Champion 1 of 3

I made the round of the clocks last night, too. At least it's easier to move the hands forward an hour in Spring, than back in the Fall.

Though it seems like with each time change I find myself wondering "Do we really need that clock also?"

Hope you're feeling better soon, kamakiri.

Day 13:
OK, this is an odd use...

I noticed that there was a bunch of unknown crud wedged between two boards on the stairs down to the deck. So out comes the all-purpose scaler on the '83 and cleaned it all out. The scaler is great for poking and prodding, as well as flipping steaks.   :)

Thanks! In all honesty, I had really underestimated the metal saw; I thought it was just the edge of the file (like every file has) and that Victorinox had chosen to call it a separate tool just to up the tool count.  After all, Leatherman Wave files have a similar pattern of teeth on their edge, yet Leatherman doesn't call this edge a metal saw.

But it really works, and in my case I think it worked better and faster than a hacksaw would have (certainly better than the dull hacksaw that has been abused by high school students that we had access to yesterday).

I also used my Pioneer's awl to ream out holes in 3D-printed components for the robot. I would have used the Champion's awl, but the holes were too large and as we all know, the Pioneer awl is far superior to the 91mm awl at reaming and drilling. One of the students remarked "that's a weird-looking knife", which gave me a chance to teach him about that wonderfully simple tool known as the awl.

Day 13
With Texas weather as unreliable as ever, today was beautiful, sunny, and around 65 degrees F after a week of temperatures ranging from the thirties to the fifties. I took the chance to care for the plants I planted last weekend. The Champion’s scissors helped to trim off dead flowers and leaves.

Thanks SteveP…better now after an easy day. This old man gotta remember he no longer has a lead-lined stomach.

And you’re right about going forward one hour generally being easier for the clock adjustments…just not the body adjustment.

It’s funny how much more useful the scaler is once you realize it’s not just a scaled (and ruler). Still perhaps my least used, least loved tool, but they’re also good for some mods, specialized poking/prodding and pry tools. Previous challenges have also helped me see the light!

Glad you're feeling better.

Other recent (though pre-challenge) uses of the scaler have included ice pick and cleaning out the blades on a paper shredder - really didn't want to stick my finger in there.

Very pretty! Are those Colt Peacemakers?

I wish they were!  Those are .22s by Heritage Arms.  As revolvers go, they're cheap, and cheap to shoot.  Knocking the empties out of the short one takes time, so I don't burn up much ammo.     I think I've got my friend talked into buying one for himself and one for his grandson.
