Day 18

Cut through a lot of tape while opening boxes so time to get out the alcohol for another cleaning.   :(

That truly is a thing of beauty! :2tu:
Thanks Farmer X!  But your making me feel like I need to point out that it’s broken and is awaiting an original bail replacement!  The donor part is lined up…and the needed ‘no-drill’ rivet removal process for the broken bail/clevis part on the front side is ready to go…just haven’t gotten around to doing this one yet.  :-[

:iagree: :iagree:

On both points. In use, it only gets in the way for me. Gotta flip it back n forth depending on the tools you’re using. And lots of the ones I have show very clear signs of a previous owner closing the main blade on them! I love the way they look, but don’t ever wish they’d come back for regular production.
I agree. The bails look cool, but get in the way.

kamakiri - Day 17

Happy St. Paddy’s Day! Changed to a 1973 Hoffritz Champion B for Day 17.  No uses so far. Pictured with some of my favorite greenies for today.

Today’s Hoffritz Champion B sports the rare first ruler on the s.caler as shown in the close up. This one is likely produced just before, if not parallel to the first Champion Cs. The main line knives with these rulers appear to be just a tick earlier in production.
That green shamrock Hoffritz is really nice!

Challenge of Champions Day 18

Currently at the BBQ cookoff and unable to post pics,,,, will post a makeup pic tomorrow. We had a brutal storm come in and try to take us away with high winds. Had a screw come loose on my Easy-Up and the Champion was able to get it all screwed back together. Forgot to take a picture of that though.

Good luck this weekend GA1dad!!

That green shamrock Hoffritz is really nice!

 Thanks SteveP!  I was glad to find this one in this condition…with its original sleeve. I have an earlier, rarer version/type …somewhere… but not quite in as nice shape.

I agree. The bails look cool, but get in the way.

That’s the sad reality to me. I’m very aware when I’m carrying one. One plus for me is it is something you can fidget with…

Had my overhead canopy tied down to my car at one event and figured that was enough, but I didn't have anything on the other end.  Wouldn't you know, a gust of wind caught the free end and flipped the whole thing over the car. The car was ok but the canopy was destroyed.:twak:  Since then I've made sure to have weights tied to each corner. The overheads with vented roofs do better in high winds too.  I hope you do well in the competition.

I'm posting a little late today because I somehow misplaced my camera for a few hours.  Just totally forgot where I left it. :dunno:
I used the large blade to open a 40 pound box of cat litter.

kamakiri - Day 19

Changed to a 1975 Hoffritz Champion C 11258 for Day 19.  Haven’t done the mail yet, but adjusted the rear brakes on my youngest kid’s bike.

A bit of a rare one as there weren’t many Champion Cs to leave Ibach with a clip point…and then only a portion of those were also for Hoffritz. My guess is that the Hoffritz ones were produced in greater numbers than the main line 1973 Cs with clip points…but that’s just a complete guess with the slight bias to knowing that the Hoffritz knives were used to ‘dispose’ of the various clip point and associated 2.7mm parts over a longer period of time over multiple calendar years. Though it is possible each variant of these Hoffritz/clip Cs may be fewer than the ‘73 Cs. There are a few part and construction protocol variants that I have seen. This one has an H/VSSR stamped tang and an unusual combination of 2.4mm and 2.7mm parts in the blade layer.

One of the others I’ve talked about a bit can be found in the Vintage Owners Club thread where a (not-1973, but advertised as such) knife is shown. Produced, I believe, close to my ‘75 shown here. If I’m wrong about this date, then it would be just a bit later in early 1976. Just too many 1975- produced parts to make me think that’s not the case for this one.

Day of Challenge / Knife used:
1. Original Black 1984
2. Champion Plus c. ‘09
3. 1974 Red w/o Nickel Silver Shield
4. 1967 Hoffritz Champion B
5. 1983 Hoffritz Champion C - 11258 Super Knife
6. 1965 Hoffritz Champion B
7. 1986 Champion C
8. 1978 Champion C
9. 1989 Champion C
10. 1978 Hoffritz - Stainless inlay
11. 1980 A&F black Champion 1 of 3
12. 1969 146fmaU Champion B
13. 146fmaU Champion B - TGS inlay
14. 1989 Champion C - Credit Suisse inlay
15. mid-‘50s 146fmaU Champion B
16. 1963 146fmaU Champion B
17. 1973 Hoffritz 146fmaU Champion B w/ 1st Ruler
18. 1966 Champion B 146fmaU H
19. 1975 Hoffritz Champion C - 11258 Super Knife with clip point

No uses today. Spent the first half of the day serving BBQ at the event and the rest recuperating from it. Ready for some sleep now.

kamakiri - Day 20

Changed to a 1958 Champion B 146fmaU for Day 20. Picking a co-Champion for the day, because I thought that this duo was worth featuring together instead of on consecutive days. The second knife is a 1960 Champion A 246fmaU sporting the rarer Corkscrew (at least in the States).

No big uses for either as I didn’t make much time for knife and hobby time today. But both of these knives proved the mettle of their metal and showing they can each cut grade 5 titanium, even if just a bit, mostly for show.* Just a couple of starter notches in a piece of 3mm stock I’m going to use for scales and some other covert squirrel doodads.

*Note: No saws were hurt and no teeth were lost during this demonstration. Do not do this at home. kamakiri is a trained and slightly crazed individual.

Hidden rivets and a whole bunch of changes are typical of these knives that immediately follow the last main line 91mm cellidor scales knives with exposed rivets.

Day of Challenge / Knife used:
1. Original Black 1984
2. Champion Plus c. ‘09
3. 1974 Red w/o Nickel Silver Shield
4. 1967 Hoffritz Champion B
5. 1983 Hoffritz Champion C - 11258 Super Knife
6. 1965 Hoffritz Champion B
7. 1986 Champion C
8. 1978 Champion C
9. 1989 Champion C
10. 1978 Hoffritz - Stainless inlay
11. 1980 A&F black Champion 1 of 3
12. 1969 146fmaU Champion B
13. 146fmaU Champion B - TGS inlay
14. 1989 Champion C - Credit Suisse inlay
15. mid-‘50s 146fmaU Champion B
16. 1963 146fmaU Champion B
17. 1973 Hoffritz 146fmaU Champion B w/ 1st Ruler
18. 1966 Champion B 146fmaU H
19. 1975 Hoffritz Champion C - 11258 Super Knife with clip point
20. 1958 Champion B 146fmaU & 1960 Champion A  246fmaU
