Multi Purpose Shears and Scissors.
on: September 12, 2021, 04:40:21 AM
Much like utility knives, I can't seem to pass up on a good shear or scissor that is multi-functional. In fact, I love these so much, that they tend to do 90 percent of my cutting purposes at home. Consequently, I tend to have these in at hand locations around my house ready for whenever I need to cut things. I thought I would do a roundup of the ones I have and give a little discussion on each.

1. This utility Scissor is probably one of my oldest, and it doesn't have many features, but what it does have, it does very well. There is a blade lock to keep the spring loaded blades closed when in storage. The handle is very comfortable and rubberized...and thankfully, the rubber is holding up very nicely. There is a notch in the bottom blade for holding rope, or as some hunting versions would call it, a wing notch for those who might wish to use this in their field dressing kits. The scissors on this thing are beautiful in that of all the years of service, it still cuts as good as the day I bought it, which by my estimate, was back in 1997.

2. Duramax Pro Heavy Duty Scissors. Here is another cool and very useful cutting tool. Featuring wire cutter, sheet metal cutter, bottle opener, and a crushing section found between the handles which might be useful for cracking/crushing nuts, garlic, etc. I have no clue what the 2 plastic horns are for, or I haven't found a use for them yet.

3. As Seen On TV Utility Scissors. This is another odd but useful cutting tool. The blade pivot has two positions.

4. Zibra Open It Shears. I can't say enough good about this one. The blades are perfectly positioned to open blister packs. This is my go to tool if I need to get into anything sealed in plastic. Most scissors direct the cut piece towards your hand as you use them. This one eliminated that issue. There is also a built in retractable safety utility blade and a double sided screwdriver added for good measure. The whole thing is held together by a simple swing arm locking mechanism as the shears are spring loaded.

5. Fiskars Cuts+More. There is a lot to like about this tool. Not only does it come in a handy sheath that also doubles as a blade sharpener, but there is also a sharp plastic point that is useful  for opening packaging. The blades come apart for easy cleaning, or to be used as a knife. Lots of functions and of course, Fiskars have always made nice scissors. No belt carry method however, as the included sheath is there to protect the blade and provide some added functionality.

6. Benchmark Heavy Duty Multi-function Snipes. Geared more to the construction trades, this one also comes with an included sheath with built in blade sharpener, a place to put a pencil (I have one of my mechanical pencils installed here), and also a sharp plastic protrusion also useful to open packaging with. There is a locking mechanism to keep the spring loaded blades together during storage. Not sure why they included a built in carabiner considering it comes in its own sheath, but it is a nice touch, and I guess someone out there will find it useful. my biggest issue with this is the included blade sharpener, which is a nice piece of ceramic which unfortunately is exposed on the underside of the sheath. I would imagine this would be a wear point for any jeans or clothing material for the wearer.

Thanks guys.

Yes, the sharpener works wonders, and it is the easiest scissor sharpening you can do.
