Toolbox Challenge - January 2022
on: October 04, 2021, 04:07:46 PM

Oh, so multi-tools are a compromise, are they? They don't excel at anything, you say? :pok:
Alright then, time to put your mouth where your money is.
This January, multi-functionality is a no-go. Time to carry the right tool for the job.  :like:

Rules:
1. Carry tools with single functions only. No multi-tools, no multi-layer Swiss Army Knives, no combo one-piece tools, no wallet ninjas.
2. Post a photo of a single function tool for each day of January.
3. Some tools have one feature but many functions. This is fine. A dedicated flathead may be used as a screwdriver, pry bar, wedge, scraper, etc; but it is only one feature: a flathead screwdriver, so it is ok to carry.
4. Some tools are combination tools by design, like pliers, hammers, axes, etc. This is acceptable.
5. Tools that have a slot for multiple accessories are acceptable, like mini bit ratchets, scalpel holders, etc.
6. No need to commit to a set of tools from Day 1, but it would be nice to see your core edc that will be replacing your normal multi-functional tools.
7. Other stuff.

The badges will be the Knipex tiny pliers. :dd:

Let's do this.

Interesting concept  I usually do use the right tool for the job at work  but always keep a MT handy anyways :D foe those just in case type moments that do come up rather often :ahhh

So, unless I change my mind this is a no go for me  :D

Good luck to all those that do sign up :salute: I will watch and might even post some pics as the month rolls on :tu:

Given that MTs are supplemental tools for me, this challenge would not be difficult. And I guess it would be interesting to highlight some of the other tools I use. Most importantly, I want that Knipex badge  :gimme:, though I don't know if there will be enough interest here this type of challenge.

I'm interested, but I'm trying to think how I could realistically do this one.  I have some small tools too, but I don't have room in my pockets to carry a knife, a screwdriver, and a pair of pliers.

And I want it, but maybe not enough to carry at least three tools (blade, screwdriver, pliers).

Get more and/or bigger pockets.

The badge is definitely cool and I'll be following this, but I don't own some core pieces I would want for this (Knipex Cobra/Plierwrench, mini ratchet etc.) and pocket carrying a dedicated file seems risky  :ahhh

Unless things change I'll just be keeping an eye on this  :tu:

I've been thinking about this as a minimalist challenge.  Small Knipex, screwdriver, and a knife, mainly so I could fit it in a small belt pouch.

That's my idea as well. Not minimalist necessarily, but the core edc tools can go in a pouch.

That's a great kit.  I've got its overkill brother in my day pack.

My minimalist idea:

And you reminded me that I have an old ratchet driver.

I picked up a small screwdriver today specifically for this challenge - a Klein Tools 4-in-1 Electronics Pocket Screwdriver.  This, along with my smallest pliers and an undecided pocket knife, will complete my "deconstructed multitool".  I'm in.

The badges will be the Knipex tiny pliers.
Your exact badges, with the backgrounds colour matched and some anti-aliasing to smooth out the text and curves:

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a single-function pocket prybar that's not too expensive?  I found several prybars I like, but they all have another function built in (like a bottle opener).  I need something that qualifies for this challenge, and I don't want to pay a lot since I'm not likely to use it after the challenge.
