Surge disassembly help. tool tock spring
on: October 26, 2021, 04:22:32 AM
I have a 2013 gen 1 surge that has a problem with the tool lock spring on the bit holder/can opener/pocket clip side. The spring is not pushing against the lock hardly at all.
So the tools and the clip do not lock in place. The spring doesn't appear broken, just not very bent so my question is, how do i drive the pivot pin out so I can get the lock out of the way
enough to give the spring a little helping bend?

I know I could send it in but I don't want to take the chance of getting a gen 2 surge since I already have one of those. Plus this seems like a trivial fix if i can get the pin out.
I've tried driving it out with the eyeglass screwdriver from my charge and it will not budge so I know i am doing something wrong

Thanks in advance for any replies!

pic, gen 1 top vs gen 2, much more ben on gen 2 and positive lockup

Might be some trial and error to get it bent back enough to lock again as I have never did this  Even if you get it bent some it may not help or it.may help quite a bit

Sorry I couldn't be more help

If I am reading correctly, the pin that u are referring to is not a pin. It's a whole piece together with the locking tab. U will need to unscrew that end, dig out that locking tab to be able to access and bend the spring back. Be careful when bending though cos that may break..

Where are you based? Send it in for repair under warranty, but if you have a sentiment attachment to it, remember to let them know, else they might send you a brand new one.  :tu:

that's what I'm worried about, I have both generations and don't want to end up with 2 new ones.

I think the only way would be to disassemble the handle.  Then you might be able to add something to the back of the lock to make better contact. If it was me I might try to slip something between the lock and the spring to see if that would work before taking it apart.

it's just flabby. I have never really done much with it since i got it in 2013. the other lock isn't overly good either but at least it does click into place. This one i have to push the lockbar down and it doesn't stay. so I have to do something.

The only way I see is a disassembly so you have the faulty bare handle seperately without tools.
To remove the lock rocker you'll have to push/pull the handle to widen the space that holds the lock rocker in place.
The metal is springy a bit but you might end up having to bend it open to get the lock rocker out.

so tonight i said wth and decided to try. i only have 1 security torx the right size so i was unsure if i could get it to loosen but the locktite only stuck on one side so i was able to loosen and then pryed it until it popped the lock out. a bunch of bending later it was time to put it back in. that took a whole lot more prying but finally that pin dropped and i was able to line the lock up and the pin dropped into the side panel

now it has positive lockup and the pocket clip doesn't just shake loose.

Thank you all for the suggestions! :woohoo:
