I was a member of the computer chess community for over a decade before finding my way here. Many of the chess programs were/are released open source with a GNU General Public License (GPL). From time to time a closed source chess program would appear and quickly rise to the top (in terms of chess playing ability). Much of the time we would discover, by various methods, that the fast risers resembled the best open source programs a bit more than they should.
