Jackpine, funny you went with Climbers today...

Day 18
Doing another back-to-back comparison today - Wenger Traveler yesterday, Vic Climber today. Slightly different size, slightly different tool load.

This was an eBay purchase last May. I heard good things about the model, so decided to pick one up. I do like it, but prefer the Explorer for the mag glass and the inline Phillips I can use with my hex bit coupler.

I think this is where I realized four layers was a sweet spot for me. Unless I can find a Yeoman at my junk shop for $3...

Took Mrs. P to lunch, then to a museum, then some Christmas shopping, so no use today.
SAKs:
58mm: Bijou (3), Classic SD (7), Mini Champ Plus (mod), Alox Classic SD, Rambler (3), Companion
65mm: Wenger Esquire
74mm: Executive (2)
85mm: Traveler, Delemont S10, Bass
91mm: Champion "c", Swiss Champ (4), Explorer (3), Deluxe Tinker, Huntsman, Serrated Spartan/Weekender, Explorer Plus, Deluxe Explorer Plus (mod), Outdoorsman Plus, Champion "a", Champion Plus, Timekeeper Alarm, Golfer
93mm: Pioneer Alox

I've seen 91mm and 58mm pens for sale on eBay. I know there are 91mm ones out there now.
I'll have to look again.

A few climbers today.

Vic Climber today.
Nice Climbers, y'awl! I agree that it has a good tool load for use around the house and urban EDC.

Day 19

This time around, I'm showing a model closely related to the Classic and Classic SD: the Bijou. The green one with the logo was part of the $1.65/ea lot, and the red one was purchased with a 1986-1991 Camper. I briefly carried the red one, but it's now largely retired from that role. A neck lanyard is now my preferred method of 58mm carry, and I don't feel like making a slip to attach to the lanyard.

Nice climber!

Funny, I have changed my preferred size of SAK a lot over the years. Now I really prefer the swisschamp most days. There was a time I thought the huntsman was perfect, but way too big to carry!

Day 19

Sticking with yesterday's toolset, today I'm carrying the pioneer x with a bonus super tinker joining for the photo.

I got this pioneer x from my kids, birthday present I think. I really like how solid the alox models feel. The super tinker I bought secondhand at a flea market. I didn't have one, so you know the deal.

This morning I actually counted my climbers.....I actually have 6 plus scaled and 9 plain scaled

Nice Bijous. Bijoux? Bijoues?

Interesting that the green one doesn't have a Vic shield on it. And are those red scales two-tone? In the photos it looks like a lighter shade of red fading to a darker shade. Looks cool.

If I'm not in a challenge, I usually carry a Champ when out. Still trying to decide if I need a Champ at home or can get by with something slimmer.

Day 19

Moving up to four layers...

I'm not entirely sure now why I bought the Huntsman. I think I was toying with adding pliers and a mag glass/inline Phillips layer, but this used Huntsman turned out to be in rough shape when it arrived, so it stayed as is. Though I did use it to test grinding a cut-and-picker blade (like on the Mini Champ) into the can opener. It wasn't that successful.

The curved cutter blade (following Felix Immler's directions) that I put on another SAK works much better.

In case you're wondering, this Huntsman has nylon scales instead of Cellidor.

Day 20

Figured I'd throw the Evogrip 18 in my pocket today. It's basically a Vic field master with a nail file instead of small blade or a Evo style Wenger handyman. This one isn't an S model, so no locking blade. I like the blade shape. The scissors are just ok and the springs are very weak. In all honesty I think the field master is my choice for the same toolset.

Bonus shot of my white swisschamp, because who doesn't love a swisschamp!

Great photo of two great SAKs. That is a great tool load for most uses.

What a nice challenge, I hope to soon be able to participate !
You can start it up whenever you have the 30 SAKs. Just post in the Swiss Army Knights forum before you do and invite others to participate.

Are those red scales two-tone?
I don't think so. More likely it's a trick of the lighting or the photo editing process.

I'm not entirely sure now why I bought the Huntsman.
It's a cool Huntsman, that's for sure!

Figured I'd throw the Evogrip 18 in my pocket today.
I like those scales. Shame they don't offer them on a two-layer model. And I love a SwissChamp, too.

Day 20

Today I'm showing a pair of Rallies. The white one with horribly worn scales (and a blade that's in dire need of touching up) was part of the $1.65/ea. lot. It'll get new scales eventually. I spotted the translucent orange one on eBay before Victorinox trotted out the myriad color varieties of Classic SD this year. The start bid was high, but someone had placed it...and my bid brought it home. The orange one was part of a lot that included a translucent orange Rambler that, unfortunately, seems to have a broken scale.

Day 20

Carried the Deluxe Tinker today. For around the house or in an urban or suburban environment, this is a great tool set. I picked this one up on eBay back in May as I wanted a 4-layer with pliers. The tip of the main blade was snapped off (see second pic), but I ground a curve into it with my Dremel.

This Deluxe Tinker became part of the inspiration for a mod I did later - we'll see it later in the challenge.

I don't carry this one much, because I prefer the mod I did. But I do keep it on my desk and usually grab it when I need pliers quickly.

Day 21

This Altimeter was very kindly gifted to me by Aloha. I have yet to carry it, because its pen is missing (the pen from my user SwissChamp stood in for the photos). It may go in for service sometime, as the altimeter has to be reset often. Maybe Victorinox could also replace the button whose Swiss cross has worn off?

Tomorrow I'll be showing another SAK that was gifted to me by Aloha.

Very cool. I like how it has the third slot opened up on the back scale for the small tweezers.

My Timekeeper alarm must predate Plus scales as it has just one slot total with a toothpick.

Day 21

OK, this one has a bit of a story...

I picked up this pre-hook Explorer at an estate sale back in May for $8. It was very dirty and most of the tools wouldn't open. Following suggestions from many very helpful forum members, I spent days cleaning it and soaking it in different things. Finally I managed to get everything working again. I was quite proud of myself for bringing it back from the dead.

If you want to, you can read about my adventures getting the blades moving again at https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87409.0.html. There are a lot of good tips in there.

This one is old enough that it has the key ring eyelet on the blade layer, not the opener layer. And it has the mag glass/inline Phillips layer next to the blades instead of the openers. Forum consensus is that it's a 1986 Explorer.

This was the first Explorer I owned and it got me hooked on this model. It, along with yesterday's Deluxe Tinker, were the inspirations for the mod that we'll see later.

I still like the Explorer and have since picked up several more of them. But this one has a special place of honor because of all the time I spent on it.

Per the SAK Wiki, the Timekeeper Alarm never got the "electronics" back scale.  :dunno:

Quite the saga you went through with that one. It's a cool older SAK!

Day 22

Here's the other SAK gifted to me by Aloha: a 58mm Executive. He first showed it in this thread, and sometime after it was known what the logo was, he offered it to me. It bears a logo for the Lockheed P-7. I did give it some brief pocket time, but owing to its good condition and presence of a logo, it's primarily a display piece. Just for fun, it's shown with the one I'm currently carrying: a black Pioneer.

I had planned on something different today, but switched it up last minute in case I needed more tools. Snowplowing on the schedule today.
So here's a workchamp. Not better than a swisschamp, but different. I think it's a bit easier to use with gloves on.

Those are both nice. I also remember that thread requesting help identifying the logo.

Day 22
Another two-fer day - two with-hook Explorers.

Bought them both used on eBay over the summer.

The black one I thought I'd part out and use the mag glass/inline Phillips layer in something. As you can tell from the photo, the previous owner got a lot of use out of the blades as 1-2mm is gone from each blade due to resharpening. They're still sharp though, so no issues there.

The big problem was the scissors. It looked like the previous owner had used a pull-through sharpener on each blade to try to sharpen them, leaving a cutting edge on both sides of each blade. This meant that the blade edges did not meet when cutting. I used a diamond sharpener to re-edge to only one bevel per blade and they work fine now. I also burned in a pin slot. After all that effort, I decided to keep it intact. Yes, it's old and a little beat up, but another successful resurrection.

The red one I picked up for a good price, again thinking of parting. But it's in good shape so I'm thinking of putting Plus scales on it, maybe black, yellow, sapphire, or ruby.
