Day 27

A couple days after Christmas 1983, I used my Christmas bounty and some hard earned cash to buy this one. A shiny new (at the time) Champion. I thought I had the world by the tail! I carried this knife to school, and it was quite a hit with the other guys. Don't try that today kids!  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Today I'm sharing the Delemont Evolution S557.
That model has a great tool load. However, I can definitely see why so many folks seem to dislike the locking mechanism.

Here's an Alox electrician. I got this one in a trade for a cheap china old timer lock blade 194OT. I think I got the better end of that deal.
:iagree: I've heard many things about Chinese "Schrades," none of them good.

I carried this knife to school, and it was quite a hit with the other guys. Don't try that today kids!
I carried a knife to school starting in sixth grade on into college. As long as I didn't make a big production out of it, all was okay. I can't imagine being a kid today!

Nice Champion, too. You must have been the envy of all your peers!

Day 27

Earlier this year, I had the idea to get one of every 91mm model that is currently in production, and doesn't contain tools introduced after I bought my first SAK, and preserve it. I may or may not follow through with that goal (only five remain if I don't want to get every one in red). This Deluxe Tinker is one of them. The Swiss Cross scale looks good enough, but the back scale has several funky spots from the factory. I will either polish them out or get another Deluxe Tinker. If I go the latter route, the one pictured will go into my paracord tools box. It's perfectly equipped for that role!

The deluxe tinker looks to be a nice model ! I'm just concerned about that T philips, I saw that a few people broke it. I also prefer the inline one, I must say.
But I will eventually get one...

I've yet to break a back layer Phillips...or, for that matter, extensively test the inline Phillips. There's also the Deluxe Climber, which has a corkscrew in place of the back layer Phillips. It has been out of production for a while, though.

Nice one! The only Saks w/pliers in my collection are the champs and S52. I really need to work on that. Your plan for the 91mm's sounds good. That will be a great collection!

I think as long as you use it as intended you'll be fine. I actually prefer the corkscrew. The can opener driver works for most of the Phillips driving I need to do. If I plan on needing more than that I carry a sak with inline Phillips. Either way, I'm sure you need a deluxe tinker  :tu:

Day 27

This is one of my favorites - a probable 1963 Champion "a". I was browsing in an antiques store (not my usual junk shop) in September and spotted it.

I didn't know what it was when I saw it, but didn't have one and the bail and backside long nail file told me it was old. When the store owner said he'd take $19 cash for it, it was a deal. Out in the car I looked up what it was on my phone.

I had to recurve the bail as it was bent and had to find a single-leaf scissor spring as the original was snapped off (thank you, viktryls in Ukraine). The last curve of the corkscrew is gone, so I filed down the broken tip to a point and it works fine. And the original toothpick was missing. Otherwise it's in great shape.

It came in a brown leather snap sheath. The inside of the snap is stamped "ECHT 2 PRYM", which was a West German leathergoods company. So that's an interesting connection.

I'm not a big backside Phillips fan, so probably won't go looking for a Champion "b". But if I stumble across one with a deal like for the "a", I'll get it.  :)

Tomorrow's SAK will explain why this "a" is a special part of my collection.

I carried it today (gently), but didn't need it for anything.

SteveP- awesome find on that champion! Looks like it's in great shape for it's age.  :tu:

Yes, you'll be seeing that one in the challenge of champions! My only other champion is a plus model that's still new in the box. I had another that I gifted to a cousin in the USMC. It's a well traveled sak now.

You have all the luck finding great SAKs and deals! Care to send some of it my way?  :D

Day 28

This Fisherman is another 91mm that I bought to preserve. I like the fish inlay in particular. It's a shame you don't see more of that sort of thing on Victorinox SAKs. (Wenger did much better with nifty graphics of regular production models.) Though this particular knife is going to stay nice and pretty, I would unhesitatingly add one to my tackle box. I have time to get that done...I won't be going fishing until at least the middle of spring!

That's a nice SAK, Farmer X !  :tu: I don't know how many "regular" SAKs they did with special inlays like that, besides this one.

Thanks! As for current production with special inlays, the Fisherman is pretty much it. Besides the tent and "camping" I previously mentioned, there is the Grand Prix with the antique car inlay (I wish I still had mine!) and one with a St. Christopher inlay. I believe the latter is the Automobile Special. I'll consult the SAK Wiki to be sure.

Day 28

Today I got out a Hunter. It works great for it's intended purpose. The gutting blade is awesome.
I actually have this one and a red one. The red one had worked on 3 deer and an elk so far this fall. This one is new in the box. The saw is very handy for trimming brush while hunting too.
The champ and farmer also did the job during a couple challenges.

Day 28

Jackpine beat me to it yesterday with his Champion.  :(

Today I've got my 1983 Champion "c". I don't know if it was for you, Jackpine, but this was my first SAK, 38 years ago. I received it as a birthday gift from my parents - so I've got you beat by a few months. This was before MacGyver came on, so I don't remember now why I wanted a SAK. But I remember that I had to have the top-of-the-line model. They got me the leather belt sheath to go with it. I've carried it off and on through the years and it traveled with me on most of my trips. Though I never did take it to school.

One I will never part with.

So I was really excited when I found its ancestor, the Champion "a" from yesterday.

I carried the "c" today, but all I needed it for was opening the mail. I suspect it will get more use in the Challenge of Champions next year.

I like the graphic on that one. In time, I'll have a 111mm or five.

One I will never part with.
I don't blame you in the least. That's a case of sentimental value far, far exceeding monetary worth.

Day 29

For the penultimate day of this challenge, the Electrician gets the call. This is another that I bought to preserve, but if I wind up doing lots of wiring, I'll buy one as a user. The SAKs with what you might call specialty features have a certain appeal to me. The Electrician is shown with some wire and a couple of other tools useful when doing electrical work. If only I still had my Leatherman Squirt ES4...

Day 29

The last of my Champions - an early Champion Plus.

It has the backside tools of the Plus version and SAKWiki says that the first versions contained the original magnifying glass, did not have the "Plus" scales (no pen or straight-pin), and had the crossbow and cross on the tang, which matches mine. The article has no reference to a sapphire scale version so I'm guessing the previous owner replaced the original red Cellidor scales at some point with non-Plus sapphires with a pin slot. Too bad he didn't put sapphire Plus scales on it to get the pen; I might do that. This is my first sapphire SAK and I like it.

All of my Champions will make longer appearances in the Challenge of Champions (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87888.0.html) in March. If you've got a Champion or Champion Plus, come and join!

Another 111mm today, the Forester Wood.
I like the SAKs with wood scales, but I don't own any just yet. That will have to be rectified someday. Nice GAK, too.

The last of my Champions - an early Champion Plus.
Sapphire was a good choice. Now I'm wanting a sapphire carrier!

A thank you to both Jackpine54 and SteveP for making this a most enjoyable challenge. The variety of SAKs seen here, and the stories behind them, are amazing.

Day 30

If I had to pick the most beautiful SAK I've ever owned, this would be it: the SoCoCut green Farmer. This is one that I don't carry, as I want it to stay looking new (or nearly so) forever. Perhaps I'll get another for the purpose of carrying. I thought it was fitting to picture it with a tractor, but a model will have to do. The model tractor is an Ertl John Deere Model D from 1994.

Oh, and I ain't done yet. Check back tomorrow for some bonus photos!
