Lil´Knipex roundup

IMG_20220401_125020~2 by juan pedro almeida, en Flickr

The plierswrenches I keep in my jeweller´s toolbox to use as non-marring, parallel action pliers. They have that strong but controllable gripping power.

The CobraXs -paired with a Prybrid- have been EDC´d for some months now and I´m really happy with them.

Looks like after a couple of years of listing them online, but not selling them in stores, Lowe's has changed that policy. I found these 250mm Cobras all by themselves for $36 at my local Lowe's. I snapped them up as soon as I saw them. I've been meaning on getting this size for about 4 years now. The 125mms get the job done, but don't offer enough leverage for big jobs.

Appears that Lowe's is making a focus on Knipex's electrical tools (looks like the current offerings are a pair of linesman's pliers, a pair of side cutters, and the 250mm Cobras--but I only found the Cobras at this local store); but at least I have a local source. I hope the selection expands.

Very good catch!
It is an excellent tool

I don't use much my 250, but when I do only a 300 may do the job  :dd:

How do you guys like the 100mm XS pliers wrench? I'm looking for a smallish pair of pliers to carry around that aren't a multitool.

Very nice. Do you have a favourite? Or top three?

I tend to like the mid-range sizes like the 180.  The Big Boys can really get the job done if space permits.  The teeny ones are not really that useful IMO but still fun to have in the pocket.  I keep them spread out on the work bench, kitchen junk drawer and vehicle.

I have the Knipex 100mm Cobra pliers, and I find them just a bit too small for my (larger than average) hands.

I don’t have the 100 mm, but I do have the 125 mm.  I find the 125 mm easy enough to carry, even in a pocket, and I’m not sure I’d want to go any smaller.

I like it. For better and worse it is smaller than the others so it is a tradeoff there between size and general capability. It isn't that much that this can do that the 125mm can't, but it is a fair bit smaller. The XS goes easily in a  pocket, while the 125mm depends a bit more on the pocket.

(A plier wrench is a specialized plier, so if you want a plier for more general tasks a plier with teeth might be more versatile?)

For one thing, the Cobra XS fits into the front pocket of a large LM pouch.  It’s a good complement to the ST300.  You can grip something almost an inch in diameter but have a handle splay half of that.  Someone said it’s good for precision jobs and I agree.  It worked great when I was changing water hose tips and faucet connections.

More than anything, it’s the ability to fit in the large sheath that makes it a winner.

Just for size comparison - from left to right Cobra 100, Cobra 125, plier wrench 100, plier wrench 1125, Victorinox Spirit.

One notable difference of the smallest ones compared the rest of the ranges is their lack of press button. That makes their heads thinner so easier to get into narrow slits and the like.

The Cobra 125 came in very handy yesterday. The ground screw I was trying to tighten was in such an angle and location that the only way to get a Phillips driver on it was to remove the driver from the handle. The Cobra was able to grip the driver well and provided the needed torque  :tu:

The 125 Cobra pliers came in handy earlier today. I helped someone who was locked out of a house. I used the Cobras to undo a bolt that the chain was attached to on the door to get it loose.

(Image removed from quote.)

That one has been tempting me for some time, mostly due to its sheepsfoot and not spear point blade.

The only problem I have is the handles. Whoever makes these in Solingen for Knipex has also produced versions for Hilti (which has a bottle opener) and Stahwille, among others. The handles on mine (the Hilti Tea Time) have started to come off. They're attached much like an SAK but aren't able to simply snap back on. I presume the design was updated, as I have seen others with different scales.

Today is actually the first day I have used it. Based on this limited usage, I found it to be a good, but not necessarily great, knife.

I loved my Edgeforce from the start, no doubt in part due to the pocket clip and OHO sheepsfoot as well as being the perfect size for the work I do. I haven't fallen in the same way for the Knipex. Mostly, I find it to be a little too large. However, the larger size may be great for other types of use.

Hopefully the handles are attached better than they were on your Hilti.

It looks like my 125mm pliers Wrench acquired some rust. What would be the best way to take care of it?

If it’s only a little surface rust, I would say try to keep the tool dry and wiped down with a bit of oil as much as possible, and otherwise don’t worry about it.  I have some tools from my grandfather that are a number of decades old, and many have some surface rust from being kept in a garage or shed, but they all work just fine.

If yours is rusted so badly that its functioning is impacted, and or it will frequently be exposed to moisture or high humidity, perhaps consider replacing with the chrome-plated version?

I use a quick spray and wipe with CRC 6-66 Marine to remove light surface rust.

And if it has become wet I do the same before storage of any blackened tools or anything of cast iron.
