kamakiri’s fix for the newer/short in-line Phillips

I felt I was missing some of the utility of the 1973+ style in-line Phillips regarding use in smaller screws toward the 1/0 range.  I was gonna tackle the shorter reach too, but I’ll do that later and that can easily be achieved by grinding off material toward the pivot. I remember in the past how the old Phillips surprised me many times with the way it could turn much smaller screws than I’d expect. Quite the opposite of my experiences with the all the newer versions.

Only tools I used were files, and cutting was only done in the last 2mm maybe 3. The main difference can be seen in the reflection at the tip as shown in the first pic.

Second pic adds the one on my ‘84 Champion and a 58mm combo for comparison. For reference, it just fits the screws on a Photon Microlite. Just barely, but that was my target. Some care is required in use and it’s not gonna turn screws on my glasses, but I’m going to do this to all my newer users and maybe try the same on backside Phillips too.

Excellent result! I thought of doing this myself ages ago, but I didn't get a round tuit and forgot about it. I have knives with the old Philips that I use instead.

Thanks everyone!  I remember others having similar comments and complaints about the new ones regarding this issue. So I thought it was worth sharing. It’s certainly not a proper substitute for the right sized tool, but it’ll do in a pinch as we so often ask of our SAKs.  :)

Really good job, bravo !

I usually pair my swisschamp with a minichamp, so I'm covered in the philips area !  :tu:

Thanks!

No pic, but also did the backside Phillips on the Troublemaker. Works a bit better than the in-line since it has a better/pointier tip to start with.

Next one I do on an in-line, I’ll try it with a small burr on the Dremel. Just to see if that can work too, and perhaps work better.

Thanks! Unfortunately, the shoe fits.  :D At least it’s better than the next knife to receive the Phillips fix…the just finished Huntsman Lite-Lite:

Bump.

Modded the back side Phillips on a Troubleshooter. This one can turn 0/00 screws.

Awesome, exactly what I was looking for.

So basically, could you detail the different steps, please?

I was going to make the tip more "pointy" but the angle of the tip has to be modified as well? Did you filed with a precise angle?
