Mr. P - when using the 005, do you notice a reduction in aerodynamic drag from the speed holes in the frame?   By my calculations, your reciprocating speed should increase by 20%.

I think we should see a demo draw from holster like the 6 shooter fast draw competitions  :ahhh

I got an email from LM today asking what I would like to see in future Garage releases. I was thinking about  maybe a Surge.  I’m welcoming ideas before I send it to them in a couple of days.

On Garage releases that might woumd work but not on real markets. Are tools gonna be removable like bits or any difference like now. Basicly all tools has allready now changeable tools. If ot gonna be like bits then there is way too big risk losing tools, breaking of holders aäsince ppl now break tools by using tools wrong like using flathead as prybar ( too much force) and etc...

I really like too see on these Garage releases new materials using on tools and tool itself and maybe something like Crunch style locking pliers desings. Stubby pliers like on MR. Crunch, new OHT desings higher quality materials.

I’d really like the GOAT style changable tools.

Those that want the can opener can then have it, those that don’t can replace it with something else.

It makes cleaning the tool easier.

You can replace tools that break rather. Than the whole tool.

That would be pretty funny if the 007 was a regular Surge - for $300.

007 clearly needs to be an updated bond with modern pliers, lock picks, pen and lighter. No idea how to fit all that but that’s Leatherman’s job not mine.

They've run out of ideas already?

Tell them for me: Surge with a knife, scissors, blade holder, and integral bit extender (think Cybertool).  Find a way to store a few bits between the main tools, and maybe add an awl.

It is sad for the MT aficionado that Garage series peaked with the 001 Mr. Crunch, and with the possible exception of the 005 40th Anniversary flavor, has gone downhill ever since.

Am glad I got the #005 as it fits me far better than the Arc would have. And I agree that Leatherman has lost sight of innovation and foresight. Indeed they appear to be slipping rearward rather than taking the lead. Have multitools met their end? Are they all just copies now?

Was shocked to learn of the tools they discontinued. Crunch was something more unique could not see why it was discontinued. The latching mechanism was its only weakest link. An awl, diamond file, sheep footed straight edge, that could of revamped the tool. Instead they dropped it.
MTO has many mods and we strive to make the perfect multitool. Leatherman watches MTO, yet they still fail in making The One multitool with the right set of innovative compliments -- instead they put the various compliments into 3 or 4 tools rather than listening to people and fabricating what are constantly modified. Least make the consumers happier rather than dump and run. Starting to think Leatherman will not be around in 25 more years at this rate.

could not see why it was discontinued.

Its always about $$$.  We think that the people at Leatherman would run it the way we would - more innovation, more MTs, never retire anything - but their focus is not on more fun toys, its on more fun $$$.  Sometimes this works for our benefit, but often not.

And, to be fair, they are also working to feed their families and if the company doesn't make $$$, no more Leatherman. Most people on MTO won't buy that, but if other do, I for one am happy they help LM do what they do best, MTs.

The real question for this entire forum is : How much innovation can one company put in the MT family ? LM and other companies have been doing that for years, despite the fact I doubt there is a Moore law for such tools. Kudos to you, LM.

What's more, I've come to the point where I realize my PST (or Sideclip) is the one I always go back to, at least for real EDC, no matter how many cool MTs I have. Others on this forum might have the same point of view. IMHO you can't really beat the slimness/size/usefulness of the beginnings. The juice S2 came pretty close, but, LM, the problem is just you started off too good !  :D

All the other innovations (OHO, magnets, bits, etc.) really are just a declination of the genius of the PST, even though they are fun and often really useful. LM is testing how to branch out. Think about it : watches, flashlights, folding knives, pens, pouches, one piece tools, they've tried all that, with various degrees of success in consumer land. Why not ? the problem is starting inroads in segments already well occupied. One could argue they have the best plier based multitools (and the first), less so with other EDC items. Unless they buy a company with experience in a specific domain, it would take them a lot of time and money time just to catch up. So they stay with things they can make with their existing machinery. So… fixed knives.

Just one thing, LM. If innovation doesn't work out for you, and I hope that doesn't happen, you could always bring back a revamped PST 3, keeping the original form factor. Many here would buy one for sure.  :D
Please just don't call it "50th anniversary Heritage Souvenir for Nostalgic Hoarders" and sell it the price of its weight in gold. Keep it under $60, as we will need to buy dozens to give all our children and grandchildren and real friends.

What do you mean, that sounds like hoarding ?

Read the post a couple above yours. Update just a few things on the Crunch and it would be an instant "new" winner. Redo it with an outside accessible blade, and it would be the tool of the decade. There are tons of mods out there that LM could immediately use to have a bunch of winners. Instead they try weird things and see if they stick.

I completely agree with you about the PST. The best tool ever right out of the gate (I prefer the ones closer to the end of production, but all are great.) If they re-released them without a giant price tag, I'd buy a couple dozen. I don't even want them "improved", because I don't trust the engineers of today to "improve" something that doesn't need "improving".

I continue to live in hope that a new version of the Crunch is in development, and will be a mainstream tool, definitely not a limited edition one.
As you say, an outside opening blade is a great start, and I guess a bit changer would be popular. I’d quite like a metal saw or the blade exchanger from the Surge, as I do see the Crunch as a metalworker or mechanic’s tool.

I don’t mind them trying weird stuff at all, I see that as the whole point of the Garage. I think the fixed blades have been a bit too conservative to really fit the brief, but I still think there’s a chance things like the Mr Crunch jaws and Darkside extra tools might make it into production models. I don’t know what sort of timescales are involved in these processes, but a couple of years or more to get feedback and incorporate it into new designs really doesn’t seem a lot.

I don’t know if they’ll do any more PST reissues. I think the Bond fills that slot in the market pretty well. Another model that adds scissors, a Bond II to mimic the PST II, would be interesting though.

I don’t mind the Free and Surge ones. Not so keen on the Wave, Charge, PST II ones.

I usually have a Micra on me for when I’m carrying a Bond or Crunch, and never too far from a Raptor.
