Grandpa's old knife...

Howdy, all!

I was cleaning some stuff out today and found an old Swiss Army Knife that belonged to my grandpa. It's missing the tweezers and the toothpick is in sorry shape. While I was Googling replacements I ran across this site and now I've fallen down that rabbit hole of trying to find more info on his old knife.

From what I can tell it appears from the stamp that it's a VOC1 made before 1974, but that's about all I've figured out so far. Anything more I could learn would be interesting!

Really nice knife! It's from 1952-1953 imho. It's mentioned in early 1950s catalog as Craftsman mod.136ka .

Cool! I remember him giving it to me sometime in the early to mid 80s. I was always sure to have it on me when I went to my Cub Scout meetings even though there was no need for it lol.

The last time I ran across it a few years ago I thought about trying to replace the scales but now I think it's best to just leave it as is. (It has a couple melted spots on one side from a dumb kid with a magnifying glass in the sunlight one summer. Ahem...) I might still pick up a new toothpick and  tweezers but that's all I think I'll do with it.

Interesting saw blade on the old knife.

Victornox must have changed how they made the blades since then.
tools is what defines us as humans

That looks like it but this one doesn't have the cork screw, instead it's got the phillips screwdriver with a (very fine) filing surface on the side.

Yes, knife on the picture is Woodsman with corkscrew, your knife is just mentioned as Craftsman.

Oh it does for sure. That was my first knife. When he let me have it I was sure I'd be carving sticks from the back yard into beautiful pieces of art, filleting fish, and doing god knows what else! The good old days!

Right, I think the older style saws were designed to really cut on the pull stroke only, whereas the current design cuts on both pull and push strokes.

It's a nasty saw blade. I remember closing it on my young fingers a few times  :o

I've actually got another one also.

I worked at a Radio Shack store when I was in college around 1992 or 1993 and they were selling these there. I was going to say it's not as old as the one my grandpa had but sheesh this one's about 30 years old. I guess that's not so new either. Time flies.

Looks to be 1986-2005, based on the tang stamp. I'm in agreement with Storm that it looks like a Recruit, which is a model I intend to get hold of sometime. However, there were at least a couple-few models that were sold primarily, if not exclusively, at RadioShack.

Excellent knife, the Recruit. Its toolset makes it very nearly a mini Pioneer. More comfortable to use than a Cadet and a small, light carry.  :tu:

Lovely old knife and it was my grandad who got me into carrying these too. I’m single but my 11 year old nephew saw me carrying one every day and wanted one too so he finds a SAK essential to have around too now. Well he kind of rummaged though my desk and begged one of the several i keep in there lol.

Oh it does for sure. That was my first knife. When he let me have it I was sure I'd be carving sticks from the back yard into beautiful pieces of art, filleting fish, and doing god knows what else! The good old days!
