I know it's a bit late for a Buck 110 with coffee picture, but I have to pick someone up at the airport at 01:00.

I wouldn't be overjoyed with that, either. But that's a nice 110...ebony?

Yes, it is ebony wood.  The Wal-Mart special in the clamshell package with leather sheath.  They still have these, but they have almost doubled in price in the last year.  I should have bought more than one.

Day 19

I've had bad luck out of the last three "Brindale" Sealy mattresses from Sam's Club, with each lasting me about a year and a half on average before squashing themselves flat.  One was full, the other two were twin. The foundation was also being held together by a McGyver job with scrap lumber. It broke the first time I got in the bed.   They just don't last. And I'm not a big guy, and I don't think 190 lbs. is too big for a twin.  Didn't have many other options around here. We have a long-lived local furniture store, but the part of town it's in is really sketchy and there isn't much parking. The second was Aaron's, which is a rent-to-own with high markups. Finally found one in my budget range at a relatively new Ashley Furniture store here. I wanted a Tempur-Pedic, but I'd have to finance it.

Problem is, it's a bed in the box; which means I have to wait for it to expand.  I ordered the foundation online (as I had almost bought a bed in the box from Sam's before realizing that model had a high rate of not expanding correctly) and FedEx won't be delivering it until tomorrow at the earliest (Thursday is the scheduled day). -I plan to put everything together and lay the mattress on the foundation to expand. At least it wasn't as hard to transport (didn't need the eight-foot bed of my truck--it fit in the crossover) or get in the house. Thus, it's two more days with a mattress that is less than half the height it should be WITH a two-inch memory foam topper attached in an attempt to make the mattress hold another year (which it did--this one failed after six months).

For a variety of reasons, furniture stores don't haul away old mattresses, and it's hard getting the county dump to take one. I plan to just toss the fabric bits, and salvage the metal and wood bits for reuse.

Nice! I regret procrastinating getting the Smokejumper. I have the Shield, and that's it.

Back when SK Blades announced they were going on hiatus due to changes in Buck's SFO department, they were clearing out models with minor issues that others had returned.  I did get a Goodfella (based on the 501 with CPM-154 and burlap micarta) for the price of a regular 501 Squire. Got a little bit of wobble when closed, but that's it.

Fingernail trimming with a 110? You are a braver soul than I!

It’s all in the technique.

Of course the knife needs to be quite sharp.

I actually feel like I have more control when the handle is large enough to get all four fingers on, as opposed to a smaller knife that only allows for a two- or three-finger grip.

I generally find myself moving the knife relatively little, and kind of whittling off small pieces by gently pushing my finger past the knife, so the size of the knife is less important.

Using the portion of the blade just past the choil, so the “extra” length past that doesn’t do much for this particular task, but also isn’t in the way.

A large knife can generally accomplish “small knife” tasks, but the reverse is less often true  IMO.

Day 20: Opened up a Schrade Walden 204S.

I got the wrong knife. It was supposed to have been a nearly mint model from the 1950s with cocobolo handles, but this is a really beat-up junker work knife Delrin-handle version from the late '60s, and early '70s.

The screwdriver has been messed with and has no snap. The lock was badly mangled also. The seller had both knives for $25 each, and I'm guessing it was a simple mix-up. However, $25 is not really worth it for this knife. Was for the other one.

However, the seller does offer free returns, so it shouldn't be an issue. I just hope someone doesn't buy this knife and end up with the one I should've gotten. According to Etsy, it's "in three people's carts".  I got a Master RT instead of a Soldier once and given it was on my list, I kept it. I probably should've returned it. I'm sure if someone ends up with the wood-handle 204, they'll likely keep it and not say a thing.
