Spyderco Bug
on: January 27, 2009, 05:56:17 PM
Dudes and dudesses,

I got my Bug today in the post.

I am hopeless on reviews so please feel free to ask any questions if you need to

The knife came in a miniscule cardboard box with a ball chain fixed to it.  This chain I believe is more for show than anything else as I can not get it around my big fat head, but it shows that lanyards are possible. :-[

The scales appear brushed chrome in colour and the blade is in a polished steel appearance.  However, the blade is that small that the "polishing" is not of Spyderco's normal high standard.  :(

The scales are shaped to allow a two fingered grip, making it surprisingly comfortable to handle and it feels "safe" to hold. :)

The blade is shaped like their UKPK model only about an fifth of the size.

I must admit on first glance the blade looks a little bit gimicky....however it sliced through a cardboard envelope that was well padded like... well.....a really sharp knife going through a cardboard envelope that was well padded.

This my friends is a very sharp knife in a very small package.

Whats best is that it is UK legal.

It is weighs next to nothing and is about as big as a pencil sharpener (but not those dimensions)....this is where the knife excels.  I can not think of a survival kit this knife could not fit into....even those micro kits could accommodate this.  Believe me this is a lot of knife in a small package

I believe they were designed as a bit of a "freebie" at various shows much like a T shirt with a company logo on, but Sal decided to mass produce and market them.

Cost wise I have seen them go (if you shop around) from £5 up to £20.

I would not buy one for a huge amount, but they are worth at least £10 of anyones money.  Also, to be a real knife owner you must have at least once owned a Spyderco.  Now you have a cheap way of doing this.

Its too late now to take photo's but if anyone wants them doing, let me know and I will get some at the weekend in better light.

Now my UKPK has a mini-me :D :viking:

I'd be really keen to see some pics as from what I have seen so far it looks way to small to actually be of any use IMO.
I'm back!!

True you are not going to fell a Canadian redwood with this...however

Question -  Whats better than no knife?

Answer - A knife  :)

Question - Whats the best type of knife?

Answer - The one you have with you, at that time, and is legal in your area.   ;)

In fairness its not far off the size of the smaller knife on a SAK. :tool:

I will wear it as a necker tomorrow and let you all know what happens.

Note....the back spring seems pretty secure and strong.

Put it next to a 91mm SAK, most everyone will know what that looks like.  :)

I think I like the idea of this but you shots (and what price I can buy it for) will help me decide.  Nice write-up BTW.

It looks to be about the same size as my Spyderco Tie Clip:
