Day 16

Remington(?) Folding Hunter

Just got this one.  US made, but all stamps are Remington.  Guessing Case or Queen.  The delrin scales are very well done:  nice color, good jigging, slight palm swell.  Overall fit and finish is really good, except for the glaring fact that the blade seems to sit at enough of an angle in the handle that the tip of one side of the blade rubs the liner.

I think that one was made by Camillus. It's based on the #6.

Finishing off the morcela. It's great, slowly fried in butter, lard and olive oil.

You've shown some amazing-looking food throughout this challenge. I must research Portuguese cuisine.

Top work by awl...though I think some would wretch and heave if they saw my most recent cigar selection...

Do that, you won't regret it. Or you might, because the cuisine you're used to won't taste as good as it does now...

Here is the Ka-Bar 3189 listening to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning on the weather radio.  No worries though, the storm is moving north, and already beyond my location.

A.G. Russell Folding Hunter

This knife has really grown on me during the course of this challenge so far.  In spite of its size, it pocket carries easily.  The massive (for a folder) blade makes short work of virtually any task suitable for a folder.  I remain impressed with the F&F, and appreciate the OHO.

I’m actually kind of regretting not getting the other handle materials when they were still available…

Day 21
Feeling a bit peckish and not having a cheese shop nearby I found a coconut in the yard and that means it's time for the Castaway portion of this challenge.  As some may recall I do this in each challenge unless I'm repeating a challenge and have already done it with the challenge knife or tool.  In the movie Castaway Tom Hanks' character is frustrated by failed attempts to open a coconut and makes the comment, "what I wouldn't give for a swiss army knife right now." So my goal is to find out if I can open a coconut today with the challenge knife, the Ka-Bar 3189.  The first step as always was to cut the top off the coconut.  It was hard but the Ka-Bar managed it within a few minutes.  Then I cut the rest of the husk into segments so I could rip them off of the nut.  The grey coating on the blade may have slowed it a bit as this is a common complaint regarding coated blades.  Having freed the nut from the husk I dug the tip of the blade into a couple of the coconut's "eyes" so I could drink the coconut water inside.  Very refreshing and good source of electrolytes.  Finally I cracked the nut open and had a feast.  The Ka-Bar 3189 successfully passed the test.  You would not starve or die of thirst if you were stranded on a tropical island with the Ka-Bar 3189.
Now for the pictures, this may require multiple posts.
