But alcohol on a paper towel or rag sounds like a better solution. I have a bottle of 91% around that I use on the contacts of old computer/electronics components.
Yes indeed! It's readily available, inexpensive, takes that nasty residue right off, and evaporates quickly.

You can also use alcohol prep pads typically found in FAKits. I ordered a pack of 200 some years ago and stashed them everywhere: FAK, maintenance kit, photo bag, etc. They are single-sealed and great for cleansing on the go!
Best regards and stay safe,

Tape residue doesn't worry me greatly. As Tinker Gnome said, a swipe or three with a paper towel dampened with isopropyl alcohol or Zippo juice will remove all but the most persistent tape gunk. And likely it will melt Cellidor (I've heard isopropyl alcohol will do the same to newer magnifiers).

Day 13

The Spartan posed with one of the few die-cast vehicles I can't bear to get rid of: a Corgi Austin Mini (which Austin called the Se7en) by Corgi.

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

Nice! The bigger 1:36 Corgi I've only recently gotten into, as they're bigger than the Juniors/Husky models I have several of, and are thus difficult to find a place for.

While I have several more in pretty poor shape (most of those being from the '60s, like your Mini), these are displayable at least. The Range Rover is new-old-stock, and the F1 car's wear is mostly to the chrome plated bits.

The John Player Special (Lotus 72E) is English, but the Range Rover is a fairly late Chinese-made piece (box is dated 1999, made not long after Mattel sold Corgi to a group of collectors), but the tooling was made in England originally. Currently, Corgi is owned by Hornby Hobbies, and we don't get 3/4 of the catalog in the States. A few years back they made a three-inch range called "Corgi Toys" that was very well done, and it was never officially sold here. I eventually found an RNLI Flood Rescue set with a Land Rover Defender and boat from an eBay seller in Georgia a couple of years ago, and that was it.

Day 14: tightened a screw holding on a mirror, and used the blade for various cutting chores.

Sorry about the lighting. The ballast blew on the fluorescent light that is used on this side of my room a month ago, and I've been meaning on replacing the whole unit with an LED, but have been having trouble finding people to do the work.

Day 20

Light day for Woody. Some small blade work on a few packages, but nothing exciting. Instead, someone asked for a cat pic earlier in the challenge and never got one, so here's Pumpkin.

A Late day 13 post. Took my yellow scaled Sportsman out for the day but ended up using my Rescue Tool for some paper cutting of a large scale drawing on heavy gauge paper from its temporary mounting on a wall (where it had been drawn). Didn't want to take any chances ripping the paper inadvertently given it's size and content so the  111mm serrated blade was just right in the absence of a Stanley knife. A parcel of bike lube turned up later and the Sportsman helped open that.

Thanks for the tip!

I usually use water and a little dish soap. But sometimes I guess I get a little sloppy - I sometimes find I need to re-oil the blade I just washed because it gets stiff to open afterwards.

But alcohol on a paper towel or rag sounds like a better solution. I have a bottle of 91% around that I use on the contacts of old computer/electronics components.

I tend to clean blade gunk with a little lighter fluid

Seeing that setup, how easy is it to use the SAK or the Spyderco, being held together withn that split ring? Do you separate them before or use as they are?

Strangely, I used the Spartan to open an Amazon package.  And just for Marlowe, there is some tape residue on the blade.

Oh man, I can't STAND to have packing tape gunk on my SAK. To the point that I will often avoid using it to cut tape like that - even after I wash it off it still feels a little sticky...

I often use the tip of the corkscrew or back phillips to try to "break" the tape. Sometimes if you can just get it started, the tape will split as you pull up on the lid of the box.

i usually use paint thinner to clean that horrible stuff off.
WD40 or similar in a pinch.
i prefer the small blade since it's easier to clean, with no grooves or indentations to trap that gunk

Day 14
i used the large driver to pry off the cap,and the awl to puncture,a deodorant can

I've only have these on the same ring during this Challenge.  I do it mostly to help me find them in my left front pocket, where I also have a big set of keys, a Sharpie and a 2xAAA pen light.  I do not separate them for use, as my usage is limited to opening Amazon packages, cutting a few weeds or maybe a red pepper.  I have not used the Spyderco during the Challenge.

Looks like a modern SAK, based on tang stamps, etc. I look forward to having a chance to use the wood saw (after this challenge is over, of course).

Looks like it's in good condition, too. Congratulations! I'm sure you can give the wood saw a quick test without running afoul of the challenge rules, and that you'll find it a very useful addition to your SAK arsenal.

It’s in great shape. Doesn’t even need any oil in the joints!

Also, I don’t know what the rules of the challenge even are!

DAY 14  How appropriate the last day of summer school falls on Bastille Day.  My last day in the no knife zone!  No SAK, no usage.   :(  So I took a Spartan group shot.   Spartans tend to get thrown in on deals, and have industrial advertising (which I like), so I've  got a lot of them.
