They were a budget drugstore counter type knife company

From the internet

"Per Goin's the Ideal Knife Co operated in Providence RI from 1924 - 1986
In the 1930's they went to shell-handle construction"

https://www.google.com/search?q=The+Ideal+knife+co&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS901US901&oq=The+Ideal+knife+co&aqs=chrome..0i512j69i57j0i22i30l5j0i15i22i30j0i22i30l2.7944j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Thank you Steve!  I had found info regarding the shell scales but not their Barlows.

I thought a Drug Store type knife, or counter display for lumber or hardware to sell the Barlow.

I bought it and two electricians, a scrolled small lockback and a tiny stockman for $10 as a bundle.

I had not encountered a knife with oversized liners before.  And having Ideal on the tang I thought maybe a freebie if you bought so much chicken feed or pounds of nails.

Grandma had told be about getting small caliber revolvers free in large flour sacks!  So thought the same with knives was possible.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

The R bolster bothers me much less on this than it does on my Barlow (the relative scale feels better maybe?) but I'd still rather it wasn't there.

Talking of scale; this is bigger than the average Peanut but is still a compact wee thing.

Must advise that are other dangers related to traditionals knives, a thumb blister.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Last night I was examining my electrician knives, and a couple Barlows, most with very difficult backsprings.  Very difficult to open, but tried anyways as my right thumbnail has been getting stronger, yet shorter.
This morning woke with what I thought was an oil stain despite washing hands thoroughly. Instead a blood blister formed, fortunately no pain.  :dunno: :tu: :td: :td: :td:

Day 24

I'm in love with my Tiny Trapper 🥰  The little guy was with me all day and came in handy often.  Most of my knife use is opening and breaking down boxes/packages/bags, and the  Tiny Trapper did the job fine.  Yes, I would prefer a larger blade, but I love how light and small the knife is.   :tu:

Day 24

Another day of fishing in the books. My brother said he couldn't make it at 5 a.m. due to a sore back from wading/negotiating the slippery rocks yesterday. So i hit the river solo today, and did well. Caught a couple of river largemouth, which fought way harder than lake fish. Came back to the hotel and had a sammich and a nap. Met my brother at three and we went out on the lake on his pontoon. Caught a bunch of white bass and catfish. All of a sudden he advised he wasn't feeling well and we headed back. He felt exhausted and weak, flu like symptoms. Now back at the hotel for some dinner and herbal tea to boost the immune system and hopefully not catch whatever he got

Nice patina  :tu:
Hope you have a great time fishing!

Thank you my friend,,, and I am.

Nice looking knife, character is showing with daily use.

I love catching river bass, both Big Mouth and Small Mouth, they fight with many a surprises that lake fish haven’t develop.

But here is a picture relaxing tonight.
:like:

Anyone have insight about the company and handle design?
Steve hit the nail on the head: Ideals are definitely cheapos. I have one, and it looks like it's held together with hollow shank pop rivets. I can't recall seeing another knife with such construction. However, it is kind of cool in its own odd little way, and Ideal made some fish knives that are worth buying for the whale shield...if you can get 'em cheap.

Day 24

I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about this one. It's a Ka-Bar 1056, sort of a miniature serpentine jack. My limited research turned up a broad range of possible production dates and some differing opinions on said dates. Does anyone have any more information on this one?

Day 25

we're on the home straight now I think.  :woohoo:

A relatively new one to me; a Case #087 "Working" Jack with black Delrin covers.  As far as I can tell Case saved a bit of construction time by not polishing the blades and so this comes in at a slightly lower price point that most similar sized knives.  This is basically an upscaled Peanut that costs less.  :D

(sorry for the dust on the scales, I should've given it a wipe before taking the photo.)

Day 25(4)

Bulldog Jack knife and A. Wright Barlow.  Got the A. Wright last year, and have to do a complete regrind of the knife.  Really, really uneven grind and it must have been a late Friday afternoon knife I suspected.  The job is no where near perfect, but at least I no longer have to think about it every time I opened the blade. :)

Day 25

As much as I have enjoyed my Tiny Trapper, I need to move on to another knife if I want to make it though all of my traditional folders before the end of this challenge.  Today's knife will be a Bear & Son Barlow.  It was an impulse buy several months ago from Amazon.  Amazon's "completely non-intrusive algorithm" somehow knew that I was shopping for a Barlow on eBay.  I received the Amazon advertisement for this knife that evening.  At first I was annoyed at Amazon for spying on me, but then I thought "Damn, I want that knife".

Monday morning, busy day ahead, was able to start with a coffee, and reading of the news from overnight.
Selected two of my Bucks, a Canoe and the 250 (the Saunter name just does not work for me), for pocket duty.
