Multitool Hot Takes
on: April 16, 2022, 05:58:43 AM
So, I did a quick search and didn't see a topic like this, I apologize if it's been done before and I missed it.

What are your multitool hot takes/unpopular opinions? I'll start.

  • The Tread LT is seriously underrated, both as a tool and a piece of man-jewelry.
  • The Swisschamp XLT, far from being too big for a pocket, is actually the perfect SAK to EDC.
  • Seeing how well China has been doing with making low-to-mid-price knives has made me really optimistic about the future of Chinese-made multis, even though they aren't quite there yet.
  • Maybe not so controversial, but EDC'ing a good flashlight is just as important as a knife or a multi.
  • I don't see the problem with having multiple flathead screwdrivers on a tool, especially if they have extra functions built-in.

:iagree: with most all those points :tu:

Neat idea for a thread and I will have to think about some myself but I usually tend to just go to the beat of my own drum with things and not always go with popular opinion  so may not be able to think of any because of that  :D

A few of mine:

  • Victorinox charges too high a premium for black oxide.
  • The Leatherman Squirt E4/ES4 are seriously underrated.
  • A Victorinox Bantam is a great first SAK, especially for those who haven't warmed up to SAKs.

You're spot on with that high premium for black oxide. I really want a black swisstool but that price.  :P :P :P

Gosh yes. Seriously underrated and sorely missed! I have two E4s, and I wish I had more!

For me:

The Compact is underrated, and overpriced. The combo tool is too big of a downgrade to be worth the marginal reduction in thickness. Vic should put the striker file on all the hooks though.

:iagree:

Victorinox should awlso whip up a combo tool for the 93mm models. That would allow one to open cans as well as bottles and have the benefit.of a pruner or electrician's blade.

Yeah, the striker file is far too useful to be confined to only a few models. C'mon, Vic, get it together!

*    95% of scissors on multi tools are poorly planned implements that generally waste space.

Most of the time, I would rather use a blade to cut something than scissors.

But more importantly:  It is awkward and annoying to use tiny scissors on a Wave or similarly sized tool.  The scissors themselves are tiny while you have an 8 ounce hunk of metal attached to one of the scissors "handles".  Some tools like the Surge, have much larger and more useful scissors, but they are attached to a brick of a tool that could be used as a door stop.  The only scissors I have found to be worth using are the ones on tiny keychain tools because those tools are small enough to not interfere with the scissoring function.  And while I like keychain size tools to have a small set of scissors, those tiny scissors are obviously very limited in what they are capable of doing.  In theory, I could see a fairly large scissor tool working with a fairly light MT, but thus far I have not used such a tool.

All full size multitools (Wave/rebar size or larger) should have a standard size bit driver and a t-shank adapter.

Leatherman likely can, and definitely should, come up with some better scissors.

:iagree: The ones on the Micra are great but the ones from the Wave/Charge are a bit lacking ::) I have to carry a small SAK with me usually because of the better scissors  :ahhh

:iagree: You summed it up perfectly. I'm giving some serious thought to modding my Wave, and if I do, its scissors will be removed.

I keep the LM scissors in because they do work but not as good as SAK scissors :salute: I do carry without a SAK sometimes but the Executive has such awesome scissors in such a small package that it is usually silly not to have them with me  :tu:

They should upgrade the sorry excuse for scissors that come with the Wingman  :twak:

I personally found the Wave scissors to be pretty good, almost on the level with 91mm SAK scissors. However, other people's experiences may differ from mine due to variability in the scissors, which may be higher than for SAK scissors.

If you carry a SAK and can replace the Wave scissors with a useful implement, you should go for it. Perhaps we can make a trade involving the scissors if you do mod the Wave.

My Micra is not great. However, my S4 is awlsome.

Leatherman likely can, and definitely should, come up with some better scissors.

In particular, the ones in the Style PS. Without awlmost any use, the spring in mine broke 3 times! I never fixed it after the third time. Can still use them, but it's a smurfing PITA!

If it moves beyond the exploratory phase, we could do a trade. Of course, I'd need a T6/T8 bit before proceeding with any modding.

That's plain ridiculous. I'm really glad I decided against modding a Style now.
