Well I have all 3 grits on the DMT card sharpeners now and I can get a dull blade pretty sharp in just a few minutes

3 socket blanking plates with 240, 400 and 600 grit wet and dry stuck to them, or a teeny little whetstone I got from a carboot sale

I usually use whatever is available. The top of my car window. Bottom of a ceramic cup or dish. Back of my belt. I strop my knives on my hand or jeans all day long whenever used, so actual sharpening is always kept to a minimum.

that's about as on the go as your gonna get

I think I had better stick with the cards until I get a bit better in sharpening

after then I may try and improvise like that

I have a Victorinox sharpener for softer knives. Not too great, but OK in the field.

When it comes to travel - rent holiday houses tend to have the dullest knives ever - I usually bring one good knife and my Byrd Duckfoot sharpener. It´s not as good as my Sharpmaker, but faster and it puts a quite good working edge on most knives in no time. Love it!

Still, I may get a DC3/DC4 some day, for I never heard anything bad about them.

I've been trying out a Spyderco Doublestuff Pocket stone for the last couple months and it's not bad at all. I like the extra length and it seems to be a good alternative to the DC3/4s I've been using.

Here's something else to try, that I kind've stumbled upon. I have two small, three inch long whetstones. One fell and broke into pieces. I looked at the small pieces, and put one in my wallet. Anytime I really need to sharpen a knife, I take it out and go to town. Your technique may need to be improvised a little, but it works in a pinch.

I don't have a pic of it by itself, but I carry a speedysharp everywhere I go. It's a perfect piece of kit that'll not just sharpen my knife or mt or whatever. It'll sharpen axes, lawnmower blades, even a stick of rebar if the need may arise. My pics aren't workin' at present, but it's basically a pocket carbide cut off tool.

Not only no, but HELL NO!!! It's simply a small cutoff tool. A small piece of diamond polished carbide welded to a handle. Here's pics of my do-it yerself, Cold Steel Ghurka Kukri Piggyback Kydex Sheath. Pics are pretty dark, but it's a double pocket for a firesteel & a sharpener that doubles as a firesteel striker.

Those are very similar to the DMT ones that I use

how is it holding up

I was thinking of getting a few of these in the different grits as well

I love those style sharpeners as they are very easy to carry in a wallet without noticing them

So far it is holding up well.I bought it a year and a half ago.
I also need to get some different grits,fine works well but when
I get a really dull knife it would be a lot faster to get an edge with
a medium grit.

Yeah the different grits really make all the difference

The DMT ones are holding up for me pretty good as well

I've got one of these little Gerber pocket ceramic things.... think it needs cleaning though, do you chaps think just doing the hot water and soap thing will work?

I think a bin will do a cracking job myself.

I think those things are horrid myself, but I expect soupy water will do the trick yes.

I picked one of these up to try because it was cheap ....

I didn't throw it away, I was feeling evil so sold it for 20p at a car boot sale
