Somewhere is Southeastern U.S.A. a man picks up his new slip joint knife and says:
That is the biggest slip joint pocket knife that I’ve ever owned”…

Today just a short overview of the Rite Edge Miner knife. This is a slip joint pocket knife, which is a Sod Buster pattern that I took a chance on. I bought this off of Amazon for $6.99 USD. Legend has it, that many years back, high class society used to derogatory call farmers and other workers sod busters and this is one thought on why the knife pattern got it’s name as a working man knife. There is probably other theories out there.

Rite Edge is a brand of SZCO which has many knives made in Pakistan. This one however, was made in China. The wood is a lot darker than I thought. Brass liners inside and a steel backer. Pins to me, look like brass as well. Not that much play in the play which is great.

420 stainless steel and had pretty surprising edge on it. I did see some burr or mill marks on the edge and I just swiped some thin cardboard from tip to tang like I usually do.. Just lightly following the edge and now she is hair shaving sharp.

I have a few slip joint knives in my holdings and I’m getting more into owning them, as I get those old time feelings more and more as I myself, get older. Some of you guys that are old (and maybe close to my age) can remember your first slip joint knives when you were young.. maybe boy scouts. My Grandfather actually took me to one of the big box stores when I was 11 yrs old WAY BACK... And let me pick out one (a stockman pattern) and he also showed me how to close it using my leg to safely close the blade.. Back then, a lot of older folks in my family all carried slip joint pocket knives.. Some people call them “gentleman knives” today, but they are really more every day carry knifes that all men should carry, at least that what I think.

The Pros:
Price is A LOT less than others out there.

The size is a lot big that I thought! About 4 inch handle, and thick wood and close to 4 inche blade (3.5 inches).

Knife blade had a really good edge on it.

The Cons:
The wood is darker than what was advertised, looks like it was dyed a redish color. Not sure of the wood type.

Knife blade had a lot of packing grease, I was able to clean all of that off using isopropyl alcohol.

Using isopropyl alcohol took off the thin gloss finish that they put on the knife handle wood slabs as well as there was some of the red stain that was coming off. What I’ll end up doing is use some sand paper and reseal it myself down the road at some point. Also BE CAREFUL if you buy this and use this for any sort of food prep or apple cutting like some guys do as the red stain was ALSO inside the metal liners of the handle.. So just as a tip make sure you clean the heck out it when you get it.

Conclusion: For price, this knife is a really great deal. Also, I do not own any sod duster patterns this is my first one.

I really like the Sodbuster pattern knives, OHT, several from CASE as well as several from Imperial.  The Imperials seem to be close in price as your Rite Edge.  For some reason,I actually like the blades on them better than the CASE.

Thanks PC  :salute: This is way bigger than I though but still a good knife for the low price it that it was.
I know there are a few sod buster patterns out there that are Imperial brand knives. A few years back Taylor Brands owned the company and they had many brands under them including the Imperial name. A lot of there remaining stock of knives like Imperial are being slowly sold out on Amazon and other place. I used to correspond with their V.P. of thier company for a few years before they sold all of there brands under the parent company of Smith &Wesson, American Outdoor Brands. I can say even though those Imperial knives were/are Chinese made, Taylor Brands mantained really great quality assurance regardless. I may buy one or two of those. -OHT

You might wish to try the Sodbuster Jr. Size.  Very pocket friendly and are a joy to hold.
