Ooh ooh, Tascam recorder, Rode mic, my kinda gear, what are you working on Explorer?

I’m doing the sound work for this ongoing video project with a nonprofit client of mine- today it was recording dialogue from many speakers in a group on the boom also the pistol grip came in handy for some more close up stuff. That tascam has really come in handy on this project and it’s performed better than expected. I’ve been using a zoom f8 recorder and it’s great but it’s a beast- Heavy and costly to replace. What kind of stuff do you like to record?

Ah, interesting :like:

I used to write music for TV, ads etc as well as my own stuff. Tbh haven’t done a lot for the last 10 years but used to make my living from it and have spent many (many!)  hours in my studio. Coming from the days of equipment before everything was done on a laptop I know Tascam and Zoom very well….if you look closely in the rack there’s an early Zoom multi fx unit im particularly fond of

If you’re interested check out the Australian tv show Forensic Investigators on YouTube, that was mid 2000’s and still gets shown on various stations around the world (I know as I get royalties :) ) it’s the best example of my work. Me and my music partner wrote all the music, fx sounds, stings etc

Nice patchbay  :o and are those blue and red Korg devices ElecTribes?
You have so much cool vintage gear

The whole reason I got into audio was because I’m a composer/musician and my big dream was to compose soundscapes and score music for film. So I’m admittedly very envious and jealous of your success :ahhh  :D
I’m definitely going to check that out on YouTube.

While I did end up doing a few soundscapes and scoring some music for a film that was destined to be a feature film- until it was not- A part of it did get shown at a festival but it never made it to fruition. Later ended up starting a production company out in California in early 2000 and after 10+ years of trying to “make it big” doing sound out in the LA Hollywood area I finally packed up and moved back out east to New England.

Basically I’m finding the average garden-variety audio work is where the real money is out east and I’m still doing some field recording projects here and there out west but my real passion is composing music and soundscapes. Mostly using moog analog synthesizers and virtual instruments with DAWs like Reason 10 and Pro tools. I’d love to know how you got started and what your advice would be for someone looking to get that big break  :D

Today my MiniChamp had little to do except to see how it was working with a partner.

With all the talk óf adding a second type of knife to carry along side a MiniChamp, I got óne of my newest "tactical" folders out.

Thanks Explorer, took me quite a few years to collect up this stuff, a lot of it wasn't vintage when I bought it
Yes those are Electribes, bought them new when they came out, the red ER-1 (drum box) is a real fave of mine, great for sound design work

As is often the way, i was in the right place at the right time
I only ever intended to write music for myself and hopefully release, video work came as a way to support my synth and gear habit

I'd been working with some promoter guys who brought electronic music acts out from the UK to Australia for dance parties so got to meet a lot of them (Cafe del Mar, Wallofsound kind of acts), I was also working at one of Sydney's main radio stations (JJJ) as a producer - again through luck (and having a large record collection  8) ) so all of this inspired me to do it myself

Getting in at the start of the home studio revolution in the 90's, when it was still a novelty to be able to produce properly from home, gave me a cost advantage over the bigger studios. Although it was still very expensive to buy all the kit and it was before hard disk recorders and computer recording, so still originally to tape and DAT.

I then got a hard disk recorder in late 90's (Akai DPS12) which I could back up to compact disk...although not for the first year or so....which i hooked up to my Atari 1040 STe running (cracked  ::) ) Cubase (incidentally invented by an old school friend of mine with Ollie Steinberg in Germany)

At the same time there was a video production revolution happening, as I'm sure you know, so we were all mavericks with our own kit competing against the big boys.....our big advantages being new ideas (and sounds) coupled with cheap prices  :D

A mate was a video SFX guy, very successful and very talented, working for a big ad production company. One day he called me and said they needed some music for a campaign and was i interested....that was how it started
Ended up doing a few things for them, including writing the music for an ad for JC Decaux who sponsored the NYE 1999 Sydney fireworks, as they'd just installed of all Sydney's new street furniture. The ad was played as 2000 was rung (fireworked?) in, thus being played around the world as Sydney fireworks are always shown on the news etc....big break time :woohoo:

After that I got more interest as I had a small portfolio and worked with a couple of TV stations and did more ads. By this time, early 2000's, I realised I needed a better musician onboard as I'm more of a producer, so through friends met a great multi instrumentalist who could add the guitar, piano etc parts needed and we went on to work for the next 7 or 8 years together

By about 2008/9 it all changed again, we were no longer the cool young kids on the block  laptops were starting to replace studios and cheap software was replicating a lot of the work we'd spend days over. The big ad campaigns were going to the big music production houses and the small stuff was being done in house with software  :ahhh

I realised that I wasn't earning much money and my business partner had a family to feed, so we decided to pack it in and go back to the 9-5

We were very lucky to experience what we did, great times. TBH it's been great to go back to a regular salary and paid holidays again, not as much fun though that's for sure

I also started doing jobbing recording work like you, as well as audio books but couldn't make it pay

I really wish you the best with it, I don't think there's any easy way in, although teaming up with up and coming film makers would be how I'd try to do it now if I was going to

Love the moog and analogue sound

The scissors did some snipping and the Phillips driver tightened some tiny screws on a battery door.
I did require the use of the saw and the awl on the Harvester- admittedly these are two tools I have missed during this challenge. However the MC has caused me to rethink my current EDC in a big way
So I’m more confused than ever!  :ahhh

Really cool to read your story Echo!  :tu:

As far as buying gear i’m no stranger to this  :ahhh my friends in the industry call it the Gear Monster.  >:D Always lurking around another shadowy corner as the next best piece of equipment comes out and the next update needs to be installed. Always leaving its victims with little money left and many- what seems suddenly to be- oldfangled pieces of audio equipment.

Totally can relate with the transition from the larger analog home studio to digital. I’ve sold off a lot of my old analog rack gear for a more digital “ in the box“ approach it’s just so handy having my whole studio and plug-ins all inside of a portable laptop. But as handy as it is I still do miss the tactile interaction with my old analog gear.

Very interesting to hear your story and thank you for your insight- it’s extremely helpful and inspiring

Thanks mate, always good to hear from other musos too  :tu:

The gear monster is real for sure

I had it bad at one point but then wised up to just what you say, constant upgrades both hard and soft and suddenly you’re in IT not music.
Consider it one of my smartest choices to just stop and use what I have, hence the iMac circa 2009 still running it all and the vintage kit. I know it all inside out and doubt I’ll ever change it much ever again even if I get back into it proper….I will change the iMac mind!

Yep that’s an original Juno 106, I upgraded from the 60 for MIDI, that was a mistake, the 60 sounded the best….I’ve got a Roland SH3A too, arguably (musos love a good gear argument  :rofl ) Roland’s first ever synth

Now you now why I’m Echotech  :D

DAY 28

Sorry. Took this yesterday and thought I'd posted it - I hadn't  ::)  as, unbeknownst to me, the WiFi was dodgy and then went down, I was late for an appointment and just ran out the door  :ahhh

I used the cuticle pusher to open a box of coffee pods. It didn't work too well and just mangled one of the pods but not beyond use  ;)

I'm hunting about for todays use, but so far, nothing doing

Great segway about music gear and synths etc. The closest I got was a Casio VL-1

Day 30

Thanks awl for a an interesting and enjoyable challenge. I’ve never given the MC much use before preferring the Rambler or Manager on my keychain.

The MC wasn’t noticeably larger or heavier even when wearing shorts so plus for that, but I didn’t really need the extra tools either, even though I became a big fan of the back up blade.
The nail cleaner is easier to use not having to be a driver as well, but I did find the blades harder to locate quickly

So will I be carrying it regularly, probably not, but sometimes definitely

If someone wants to make a decision on a specific MC badge, that’d be cool ….I offered my quick design earlier

Congrats on finishing echotech! This challenge has been an interesting one. Spending an entire month carrying such a light weight knife has really made me think that I’m overloading most days. If I’m not careful this challenge could turn me into a minimalist  :ahhh

Excellent uses and pictures everyone! awlmost at the finish line

Used the scissors to snip a thread on my suit jacket. Attended a formal event so not much use other than the scissor snip and I did use the nail file to file down my nail and clean my mitts. No action shot but here is a shot of the MCA with an analog synthesizer called the Mother 32 by  Moog
