That sounds awful :(

That's not good my friend.  I hope the docs can find a way around surgery.

Thank you both  :tu: :tu:

It's been a painful few weeks but having had the problem 20+ years it's good to have better diagnosis that I've received in the past
Apparently if I do have the surgery, it's keyhole and not as bad as it sounds, I think it might be the answer TBH

Day 22

I’ve had long term back problems which have recently got a lot worse so had an MRI last week, moderate to severe arthritis and 5 bulging discs, one trapping a nerve. Getting cortisone injection Thursday and looking like I’ll need surgery to remove a part of bone that’s now sitting at an angle and causing a lot of the problem

To that end I’m also trying different supplements to try and future proof the rest of me!

(Image removed from quote.)

Sounds super painful,,, hoping you get some relief soon!

I don't think I have ever made it through a MTO Challenge without buying something that someone else posted.  Most of these purchases are recently or soon-to-be discontinued items, or otherwise difficult to find for whatever reason.  This Challenge is no different.   I don't know if the Spirit with the butterknife has been officially discontinued yet, but it's hard enough to find to make me expect to not see it around much longer.  It's unique enough for me to add to my collection, and I even found it at a great sale price ($89 for the whole kit).

Day 21:

I have a meager collection of rescue knives--for most big cutting tasks, I don't need a fine tip, and I'm always having to cut a sheep out of something. For package opening, they reduce the risk of accidentally cutting something you're not supposed to cut. My preferred layout is sheepsfoot PE (or CE) with or without a separate fold-out seatbelt cutter. That's the First Tactical Sidewinder Safety Knife, Benchmade Triage, or Hogue Trauma. I only have the first, as it's $30 compared to almost $300.  It unfortunately is PE, so ineligible. I had meant to get the "Range" version in red (which has a CE blade) and remove its M4/pistol tool and replace it with a strap cutter, but I never did.

Full on rounded "butter knife" tip is kinda useless, but a sheepsfoot or hawkbill style is preferred.

I really prefer part-serrated rescue knives--I have two of them this way. The Skedco Warfighter Extreme Medicine/Eickhorn PRT-IV (which is currently out of action due to a missing screw and spacer that got lost when trying to change the strap cutter--which is a snap-off hobby knife blade in a weird non-standard for the US size), The other is Italian-made Antonini ARA XL; which is a blunt-tip hawkbill. It's a little crude, but really lightweight, and extremely tough. It opens rapidly (despite not being assisted), and smoothly. There's also enough room on the linerlock to easily release it.

Used the hawkbill blade to unpack a 3 3/4" scale action figure set I picked up at Dollar General today while running errands.

I got my start with rescue knives in mind.  I used to do it professionally and had it in my head that I wanted a sheepsfoot style blade with partial serrations for EDC.  I got two of them many years ago, but they were complete junk and basically unusable.  So I get that mindset.

With a rescue knife, you get one chance to make a swipe through fibrous material or tough fabric like denim to separate it.  The serrations do help with that.

Great score Rich!  Yes I believe they're a thing of the past.
I've carried both types of blades but actually prefer the Butter blade.  Those serrations can cut!

Hang in there, Echo. My mom had to have the unfusing surgery. It sucks.

Day 22

After using the 08 to open this Weekender, I decided to compare the serrations. Much less pronounced on the Weekender, or maybe that's just do to less use?

Sorry guys,
With a relatively crazy week at work, a stupid phone that keeps loosing my pictures and a 3 day internet shutdown that just ended an hour ago, I can truthfully say I failed this challenge.
Well, just the 30 days bit, because i learned new appreciation of SE. I'll continue sporting them from time to time for sure now.
Take care everyone !

I have grown a little tired of my Crucial, so I upgraded to a much nicer tool today - a Leatherman Free P2.   :tu:  The P2 is really a generation ahead of most other multitools, and it has a killer combo blade too.

This was part of the motivation for the challenge.  Even the newest multitools are made with a combo edge.  Aficionados like us tend to avoid combo edges, but that eliminates a lot of the new offerings.  Challenges on MTO give us opportunities to try out tools we wouldn't normally use.

Despite the price, I'm really itching to try a P2 instead of the Curl. The T2 and I didn't get along well due to the lack of an ambidextrous lock release (and the limited tool set--compared to something slimmer and lighter like a Vic Spartan or Tinker), but the P2 has an ambidextrous lock release, and a decent tool selection for the weight (Fuse/PST II-ish-good enough for most jobs).

Day 22:

To avert shards of glass everywhere, I had to replace one of the pieces in a display case that was made from particle wood, and far past its prime. One of the little clamps that hold the glass against the door frame had cracked, so I took it off, and made a new one out of a piece of scrap plastic.

I removed the screw with the GAK, and then went to making the new piece.

I cut it in half with this Italian-made Antonini "Work Knife"--a pattern that originated as a German-made Kissing Crane; then was sold to Antonini; who also produces it for the current owners of Kissing Crane. The Antonini own-brand is primarily sold as a fishing knife. This one is my work knife, often carried in my back pocket, but today was the primary for the job.

It sawed the piece in half without much of a problem.

The clamping, sanding, and filing were done with a Kershaw A-100. The only one I could afford was a lot of four broken tools that I reworked into two usable tools. While often a tool I carry when doing work in the farm shop, I wish I'd spent that money on a Crunch. It is truly incapable of being carried in a pocket, and the tools are stiff. It's redeeming qualities are basically only the outside opening blade and hacksaw.

Drilled the hole out with a late '50s MIller's Falls 2-A; produced from 1958 to 1968, as I wanted it to be perfectly round. Mine is likely a '60s example, as the frame is diecast/zamac as opposed to cast iron.

https://oldtoolheaven.com/millers-falls/hand_drills/drill2.htm

It was pretty much new when my folks moved here in '69, but had been left behind by the previous owners. It was used by me since I was 7 or 8 (as my grandparents said I couldn't use power tools then, but anything hand-powered was OK), and was eventually given to me when I was 13. I keep meaning on getting the $200 Ryobi set from Home Depot, but right now, this is still my only cordless drill. I'm planning on making a trip to the Home Depot an hour and a half away (most towns here just have a Lowe's) to see if I like how it handles and to buy it in person.

Finished result. Not pretty, but it should work.

The finished result
