Lately Megan and I don't know if we are coming or going, but this much is sure- in less than 24 hours we will be on a flight across the Atlantic to a little place called Athens, which for those of you not familiar with Geography, is usually kept in a place called Greece.   :D

I've never been to Europe at all, and Megan has never been to Greece, so when she decided we needed a vacation, we naturally chose Italy.  However, after much planning and scheduling we determined there was way too much to do in Italy so we decided to go to Greece instead.   :D

I am looking forward to going, and I expect I will eat so many little lambs, although I have Googled it to make sure, and I am only a couple of blocks away from a McDonalds, just in case!   :facepalm:

I'll do my best to keep you all updated on our trip- after all, a vacation is always better when you can share it with your friends!

Also, we have a long layover in Heathrow on the way back, so if anyone has any suggestions on how to kill a lot of time there, I am sure we would appreciate it!

That doesn't awlways work well. When I visited Singapore, I had McDonald's...and the only familiar menu item I can recall was chicken nuggets.

I can't suggest anything to do during your long layover aside from meeting up with the UK contingent if won't be at night.

That's okay, Megan and I like McNuggets- in fact, those (and fries of course) is all she eats there!

We are at the airport now, waiting to board our flight.  It's a beautiful day here and everything seems positive so far!

We made it to Athens and our AirBnB.  It's almost midnight for us (Halifax time) but it's just after 5am local time.  We are going to get a few hours of sleep and then explore our local area, get Megan some coffee and pick up a few necessities.

See the museums (main Athens archeological museum definitely, the military is decent and hopefully still free.), and the acropolis area.
Go for coffee at thesio and fish at the sea area.
If you have time get a day cruise from pireas to a few nearby islands - Ydra, Egina and so on, if they have them this time of the year - the hotel should know. I think our member Kokkolis lives in Athens.
Avoid taxis, use the metro.

We landed after 3 am and there weren't a lot of choices.  It was pricey, but the driver was very helpful.

Due to travel I needed a new Swiss Army Knife- fortunately I was able to find this well used advertising version of the Econoline Spartan in a street market for way too much money!  But, getting a Spartan in Athens seemed like a sign!

Agreed, and I have some cellidor scales at home that it could wear proudly....

But I think it may keep these partially melted nylon scales as they don't affect it's function any, and they certainly add character.

I will however clean it up, but it seems to currently have a halfway decent edge.  Not the best, but certainly not the worst!

i going to be a bit of a quick update as we are getting ready to go out to eat and have a few drinks and visit some shops, but as per the post above we went to the Parthenon today and saw everything we were allowed to see on the Acropolis.

You see photos of this kind of smurf on TV or the internet or magazines (do those still exist?) and you think "that's nice."

To see it... To actually be there first hand and think about all that marble hand cut and dragged up to the top, then assembled into such structures- if I had a mind, it would have been absolutely blown.

Oops, wrong photos in the first post!

I was going to make a joke about how the ticket to tour the Scroll lis looked like.R2D2 and yet all we found was a Michael Bay Decepticon, but whatever.  I screwed it up!

All of this marble would have been hand carved (duh) and there is so much more of it than you can conceive of.... And even more of it is secreted away in museums, and there's still more here than you can imagine.

And, if its one thing Athens has more of than marble, I'm putting my money on cats.   They are everywhere, and likely the main reason I haven't seen a rat or mouse anywhere, despite this being a port city.  I live in a port city and there is a HUGE rodent problem because our animal lovers would rather see cats dressed up in IG than see them doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Getting back to the carvings, man they are detailed and intricate and everywhere!

And, even without all of the buildings, the views from the Scroll lis are absolutely outstanding, even when some strange people stand in front of them!   :P

I took a lot more photos today, but that's all I have time for at the moment-  we are hungry!
