Day 29

Second can opener use of the challenge, it didn't work brilliantly first time around and was worse this time. Closer inspection shows that the business end of the opener is bent, so that'll no doubt be why! I think she'll be back to being a shelf queen after tomorrow.

We have the tools, we have the talent!

Great looking badge, Echotech - cheers, Comis,  you’ve come up trumps again!  Great work, y’awl!

Day 29

Switching over to a Vic M61 from 1984 in brand new condition for today’s carry. First task, chopping up some spring onions to put into a potato salad for later to go with some sausages left over from yesterday’s BBQ - first of the year!

Wondering all day long if I prefer model 61 over model 51... This evening I think I prefer 61 due to Alox scales.
(Still I like 1951 and 1908 models, and actively look for an older one too)
Meet me also on youtube & instagram for mostly knives (and multitools) content

Vintage SAK 30 Day Challenge
Day 29 of 30
1970-ish Pioneer

Opening a can of chicken broth to add to my chicken in an effort to keep it moist and not dried out. Also a shot of the spread I provided for the graduation party today. I'm tired now,,,,

Comparing the back of the vintage Huntsman I used earlier this month with a modern one I'm cleaning up for one of my friend's kids to take for Scouts.

They're both great either way aren't they, thought this would be a good challenge to compare them and it has been...red alox is hard to beat and the opener layer on the m61 is better suited to my needs, but the extra sturdiness of the m51 feels great in the hand and the driver is rock solid

Day 30

Thanks everyone for a great challenge, it’s been an absolute pleasure seeing your vintage SAKs and been very impressed with some of the tests and jobs you’ve put them to :hatsoff:

Not knowing I’d be going into hospital for back surgery almost at the start of the challenge has meant I’ve mostly only been able to post pictures of my collection rather than give them much use, but this challenge was as much about seeing them as using them for me so has been most enjoyable :tu:

I wasn’t sure I’d make it to 30 vintage SAKs in 30 days but ended up making it exactly which is kinda cool

I’m going to finish up the way I started with Coco ignoring a BYSAK, this time a mod 51 Wenger Grillon from 1962

:hatsoff: :salute: to you all, thanks for making it such a successful challenge

Now to get that badge :D

Cheers

John

Day 30

Another group photo and final remarks.
It was interesting to use these older knives. Frankly, they do not feel that vintage to me, I mean, is 40 or 50 years old that old?  :)
From user perspective - the Accountant is a beautiful knife but given its tiny size and delicate scales it is for special occasion only, it is more on the jewellery side. The Wenger Professional is not a well executed tool but still appreciate its uniqueness and looks. The Solo is a great, sturdy knife, the OC red scales are fantastic, but I would appreciate adding a combo tool to increase the utility.
And in all of them I miss the scale tools.
But overall it was great to use them and as well to see all your SAK vintage gems! Thank you.

I realised that i was very late with my 29 so my 30 comes relatively early, will be a buissy day. Its been an honor beeing a (small) part in your glorious collections and artful depictions of them. Seeing all those beauties is a real joy and beeing under like minded nerds feels welcoming. :hatsoff:

Model Elsener No. 236

Used the screwdriver again to fix a broken light.

For me, the screwdriver is the most important tool next to the knife blade. This old screwdriver works perfectly for this type of screw, so point for vintage.

Intermediate score: 18:12 for vintage

I'd be tired, too. How many mouths were you feeding?

Great idea...hamburgers later in the week! :tu:

:iagree: and good write-up!

I got a little behind again, but will be caught up quickly...

Day 29

Gave the Tinker Small some fresh oil in preparation for it going back into semi-retirement.

Day 30

A group shot of the SAKs I used in the challenge...

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I enjoyed Elsinox's comparisons between vintage and modern SAK tools. Though I had few such comparisons to make, my results were vastly different. The blades work equally well regardless of age. I had no older types of can openers to try out. The Tinker Small's back layer awl does just as well as a modern equivalent. Ditto the back layer Phillips...which is to say I'm more inclined to grab a dedicated tool. Where we really see a difference is with the cap lifters and combo tools. It is little wonder that Victorinox added a half-stop to them! And the modern combo tool, though it doesn't look as good, does a much better job with opening cans.

Well, that's it. This may be the last challenge I participate in for a while, as I had several no-use days and a mind that was elsewhere. Probably it's best for me to participate in a challenge if I know I can do "30 in 30."

Time to request the badge...
