Which model has the most appropriate or accurate name?
on: January 30, 2023, 04:34:14 AM
Not the best name or your favorite, but the most accurate. Like for instance is it the compact because of its compact nature. Or is it the farmer because farmers find it useful. Or the champ because its the big one with all the tools?  Which one was a slam dunk in the naming?

I think the Camper has a name that fits its tool set pretty well. And the tool set is pretty well suited for the activity it’s named after.

I agree that the Explorer is well-named. Handyman, Craftsman, Champion, and SwissChamp are also pretty accurate.

As for Fieldmaster, I sometimes confuse it with Field Marshal.

I thought about this one and wondered if it was always called the classic even before it became a classic model.

I have often wondered though, what field? And why the phillips made it a fieldmaster rather than huntsman.

I think the 100mm knives sans the daypacker are very aptly named to the point of literally labelling the intended function.

I probably should have included the opposite question as well, which one is way off and even misleading with its name?

As much as I love the model itself, I think the Climber has the least accurate (or most misleading) name. None of its tools or functions are geared towards (or even suggest) mountain climbing, tree climbing, or even stairs climbing. "Super Spartan" would have been more accurate, if less creative.  :climber:

Ditto for the Mountaineer. It's just the Climber with a file added. Doesn't scream "Sir Edmund Hillary" to me.

I will have to agree. The climber and mountaineer make no sense to me. I always imagine someone hanging from a rope either filing some metal or trimming paracord with scissors.

For best named I'd submit the hunter, it's tools are pretty specialized towards hunters. And for worst/ keast descriptive name probably Hercules.

I should probably clarify that I'm talking about the Hunter XT not the hunter Pro

I think this way: there is always some machinnery in every field. And the phillips is more usable than a corkscrew... maybe  ::)

As for the name, what field? I see it in some workfield and also in battlefield. It's not bulky but is also well equipped.

Let's not forget the Cheese Master and Wine Master!

BTW, I got my wife a Wine Master for Christmas (I wanted one).  She LOVES it!  Says it is the easiest opener she's used, especially with the two levels of prying.  She comments on it every time, even when I'm in another room.

Whoddathunkit, eh?

My theory on the ease is that the pulling force is more in-line with the cork/bottle neck due to the long, two-stepped lever, rather than pulling the cork diagonally out with shorter, single stepped openers.
My Mods: 58mm Workshop, 91mm Picnicker, CyberCompact
Some Fav's: long nail file models, vintage unusual stainless
Quirk: I like the metal file more than the wood saw

I’d say the Wenger Giant, because it is exactly what the name suggests  :salute:

I gotta go with Scientist, but when you add scissors to it and get a Yeoman, you go from most accurate to least accurate naming convention.

What a great question -  :tu:   And absolutely agree we should definitely include the opposite question.
I do think that the Victorinox names are often pretty randomly assigned - See below

Re the best named - Nate nailed it in the first post - But some other good suggestions and comments above too
And I nominate the Golf Tool :tu:

Also what about the Wengers?   ???  - Some of them are pretty appropriately named!!
Minathor (mini-atelier-horlogier = small watch factory) - This one has to take the prize for the best named
19th Hole Cigar Cutter
SGT Fix-It
STGW 90
Bike Models (Note not the Cyclist - This is up for the worst named)
Probably loads of others - Look at the Wenger 85mm page in SAKWiki!!

Re worst named
Yeo agree the Climber name has always really anoyed me - As Climbers rarely need a blade - Maybe trim snagged nails with the scissors
The Mountaineer is a little better - As you could sharpen ice axes or crampons with the file - But still not a great name
The one that really annoyed me was the first and second gen Golfers - Basically the Compact toolset - What has that got to do with golf   ???
On the Wenger side whilst the Bike family are great for bikes the Cyclist is hopeless - Has the basic six tools (corkscrew   ) plus the Wenger wrench (which does not fit any bike nuts) and a Phillips - A little more useful - But still not a lot of Phillips on a bike!!

The Rescue Tool.

Also because it already says Rescue Tool on the scales, so naming it something else would be a bit ridiculous...

Although the spartan is one of my favourites.
And I like it's been called that.
But I don't know what does it tools had to do with a Spartan. Hercules, same story.
I also think names has some effect on liking a certain model, would you buy a spartan if it was called 'Milo'.

These seem matching:
Work Champ
Swiss Champ
Compact
Solo
Waiter
