  • His name is Robert Paulson.
Similarly equipped, same color, same basic shape.. to the uninitiated (read: not SAK obsessed), it looks like the same knife.

Main difference is maker, and serrated vs. plain blade.

I am leaning toward the Wenger to be honest. But I wanted an opinion from the experts (read: nutcases).

Lastly, who shall I purchase either from? Do we have a pal here that I should support?

Thanks,

G.

I have a ranger 57 and like it a lot, it's now my knife of choice when skiing.

Mind you the hawkbill isn't sharpened on the tip since it's designed to be a gutting blade. I sharpened mine thou, and plan to make it into a full serrated blade some day.

Actually mine's ranger 58, with phillips not corkscrew, got them confused.  :-[

Fireman. Wenger will have to seriously rethink their metallurgy before I can vote for them.

I would vote Fireman , the belt cutter blade is a joy to use , Vic's build quality is simply better .

The Wenger has a bigger blade and a bigger saw,
a better locking/unlocking mechanism
and more ergonomic handles.

I can't argue with this but would like to add my two cents.  I borrowed Def's OH Fireman and compared it to my Ranger 58.

I think one place that Vic and Wenger both fail was the redundant blade styles, The Wenger had both blades plain as well as Vic had both blades serrated. I would have liked to seen one of each. But that is my opinion.

Even though the Wenger has a locking screwdriver I found that the Vic had a better set up. I use mine for alot of sideways prying and I have had the Wenger fold on me.

As the motto goes "When in doubt, buy both."

Sidenote Tim is a great guy to buy from with awesome customer service. If you do buy both and decide that you don't want the OH Fireman then let me know we can make some type of trade. :D

I'm about to turn my ranger 58's gut blade into a serrated hawkbill, stay tuned.  :)

If the Fireman had a plain OH blade it might be a near pefect (gasp) 111mm

I find the std. Fireman to be ideal! It has a nice long plain edge blade instead of a one handed partially serrated.. It makes more sense to get the non OH version.. You already have a fully serrated blade! LOL

I prefer the two handed iteration of the fireman , for the same reason . My best buddy has one , and is madly in love with it , I played with it and like it lots .

I don't have either of those two knives but i do have the similar Vic OHT and a Wenger Ranger 61.
I have to say if you are a lefty go with the Vic.
If you try to open the Wenger left handed the blade-opening-hole is mostly blocked by the bottle-opener.
Thats a major design flaw right there.
Doesn't both me that much as i am ambidextrous, but for a lefty it would probably be a deal breaker.
