I was planning on doing the Dean51 with mostly Cases. Is this an exception to the one badge at a time rule?

Only one badge at a time for the Dean51 challenge. If you want to go for the Case badge you would have to carry a Case knife everyday for 30 days.

I think I realized my mistake. The Dean Challenge doesn't have it's own badge like most of the others, it's just an "umbrella" and you can plug in whatever works for you.

You are correct!
There is however a 30 day Traditional Badge that has been awarded to those complete the Dean Challenge.
Several have partaken in the July Dean Memorial, and have that badge, then some 2nd rounders completed carrying a GEC knife, to receive the GEC badge. And then the idea was floated to add a CASE 30 badge.
That way, we can honor Dean and also exercise our CASE knife or knives. 

I just now realized that I have 4 GEC knives🙄, then there is next year!  Unless they add a Rough Ryder badge, or one for Uncle Henry, or Queens or Buck traditional models…
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

I think it would be kinda cool to add one new brand badge each year to run during the Dean51 Challenge. Seems like that might keep it fresh for those who already have the Trad Badge.
