GSM Acquires SOG
on: December 31, 2021, 08:07:08 PM
GSM Outdoors brands, the company that purchased Cold Steel Knives last year now also owns SOG Knives.

GSM owns a number of other outdoors brands, and now adds SOG to the mix.

SOG really got the ball rolling with their new designs and quality, hopefully they will stay that way.

I can't say as I have noticed any changes in the way Cold Steel has been managed, so I assume SOG will have similar results.

Only time will tell though.

Have read that people haven't been happy with Cold Steel after they where bought, but hopefully both Cold Steel and SOG will be good eventually If the brands doesn't get trashed first.

I do not know enough about this kind of thing to be able to say whether this is good or bad. I hope things do change, for the better. I have my gripes when it comes to SOG multi-tools, so I hope to see new designs, good quality control, and honestly a different naming scheme for the multi-tools would not hurt either. Step up your game, SOG.  :pok:

Wow, that's kinda big news!

I read some of the postings on BF, and that's the sentiment I got from the posts.  Though the original management did assure the crowd about the future of CS, the verdict is still out there.  But to GSM credit, I did remember seeing CS bringing back some of the most demanded model back, but I haven't brought from CS for awhile, so no first hand data after the acqusition.

I only hope GSM don't do what they did to CS after the acquisition, but completely shutting down the original site/operation.

Been doing some reading about this subject and I don't feel good about the future of SOG or Cold Steel. I think those companies should have continued to operate as they had with GSM as an overseer but instead they close down those business and "relocate" to Texas with the people that made those companies successful no longer part of the picture. I'm afraid these companies will fail to innovate and support will be sub par. I sure hope not but I get this feeling like I did with Schrade.

Consolidation within any industry often does not bode well for consumers, as they generally face reduced options and quality at increased prices, but we shall see…

I'm afraid those days are over but we may still see some nice tools and innovation out of them

Read a bit about the Cold Steel situation, not terrible yet, but long term I see both brands going down the same path as Gerber/ Fiskars did years ago, cheap,  generic, bland...and mostly a little bit crappy...but there is some acceptable stuff coming out of China now, which is where they will likely be based so...???

That is always a possibility, as the new parent company attempts to increase profits by cutting costs.

It isn't necessarily always the case, but as I cannot think of many great examples to the contrary off the top of my head, I am not sure where I got that idea from.

Victorinox did well by Bear I guess, and they also did well by investing a tonne of money into Wenger.... but then they gave Bear back and shut down Wenger anyway, so those may not be great examples either.

I think only time will tell. The Flash and Aegis are new models released since they took over, is that correct? Would these models be an example of what they're capable of or are these hold overs from development before acquisition. I see questionable reviews on both of them.
