Day 3

No. 9 did a good job carving a knife and 2 swords for my sons. These were quick and dirty because they were on a mission and needed them asap.   [ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

I hope their QUEST was a success!!!

Excellent tools to assist them on the mission!
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Will I be able to make it through the challenge without buying more?  Only time will tell.
Let the record reflect that I made it to the second day of the challenge before I ordered another Opinel.  Amazing self-control!

I saw a good deal on a No. 12 Outdoor and pulled the trigger on it.

While the Opinel USA website lists it at 8 oz, I found several other sites showing it between 5 and 5.5 oz, which while not exactly lightweight, is much more reasonable.  Not sure why there is so much disagreement on this, but my scale will settle the matter when the new knife arrives.

Also, while I’ve seen several folks with the No. 8 Outdoor and a few with the No. 9 DIY, no one has posted a No. 12 Outdoor yet, so perhaps I’ll be able to add something unique to this challenge with it.

If I recall, there are two versions of the Outdoor No12!
One with fire starter and another with tick extractor, or am I confusing models.

Trying to avoid any more visits to Opinel Web site.

Ahhh completely forgot, and thank you so much @LoopCutter for messaging me.

DAY 1

So I have been a opinel fan for decades, and the second knife I owned was the opinel seven (my first was a flick knife....I know...but I was 6 and it was pretty and fun).

So getting back on track....I used to be a sheep farmer (age 7 to 17 years), and I used my No 7 and a spare blade a No 8 (which will be pictured in the up and coming posts), for everything.

Here is the original No 7, this knife has done at least 70 C-sections on sheep and skinned possibly 400 lambs.

It now hangs around my neck at least one day in every month.

DAY 2

The line up for the challenge, 3 x No 8, 2 x No 7, and a recent No 10....the No 10 I have not bonded with at all, so looking forward to trying it in ernst.

As per the classic challenge, I will not use anything but the opinel brand for the whole month....from now on....I promise  :salute:

DAY 3

Almost there.....right I have been looking at the opinel No 10, it needs amendment to make it usable for my needs....I will be looking to modify this, but the first quick win is adding a Sofin Torch pocket clip....I will see if this improves things?

So, I think the original No. 12 Outdoor had the fire starter, but was retired and replaced by the No. 12 Outdoor with the tick remover.  The one I ordered has the tick remover, and that is the only model currently available on the Opinel USA website.  However, a replacement fire starter is listed on the site as well, though currently showing out of stock.

Is the fire starter interchangeable with the tick remover?  I would assume yes, but not really sure.

Ultimately, these are purely academic questions for me though, as I already have both means of starting fires and tick removers as part of my EDC and hiking/camping gear.

Another dreary wet day in Puget Sound. Like many of you today, went with a Walnut no.8 and paired it with my Surge.

Day 3

Went to church, lunch and now just chilling. Going to do some testing on a new sharpener and maybe some other stuff. Carried a No. 6 because it's super pocketable and sharp as heck.

That's a beautiful knife Gordon!  I definitely feel for you on the fasting part leading up to the procedure.  Our prayers for a speedy recovery!

Opinels are great carries.  It's a rare day I don't have one in my pocket or in my pack.  I think it's pretty difficult to find a sharper, more timeless knife than an Opinel!

Day 3

6:30 PM. About to hang a mirror at my daughter's house. Several hours of work left tonight and the next few evenings. Also have several large projects going on at the same time at work. And Shannon by Henry Gross is playing on the radio. Can life get any better than this?

Fortunately, Neil Young just came up on the playlist  :tu:

Day 3

The No6 is my favorite Opinel for day to day pocket carry. Based on their prevalence here, I think a lot of you feel the same way. It often rides along with me when I'm carrying a larger or more cumbersome tool, or one that I don't care for the main blade on. It's small enough that you can forget about it sometimes. I'm glad I did one time. I was up on the roof of our camper doing some end of season maintenance. Tossed all the rest of my tools down so I could climb down that rickety little ladder more easily, and realized I forgot to cut a damaged slide cover off. Patted myself down and found I still had this little guy on me. I thought it was a big job for such a little knife, but it handled it with aplomb.

DAY 4

Ahhh Mice have found a way into the home, watched a bugger climb down a wall....as I was getting dried beans....

.... anyway vegetable preparation this morning for a chicken and leek pie. Good quality meat in the UK is crazy expensive (200g of diced organic chicken is $9), so its 92% vegetable pie....my wife said it's like the chicken burped on it, for all the meat content.

The pre 2000 opinel inox (bought this in Calais, France back in 1992), has a zero edge as thinned out in my youth and crazy good for food prep, which is its role in life.

Using the last of the Christmas goose fat to cook it all..... highly recommend getting geese to everyone....so tasty

Those mice had better watch out, the lack of meat, means that I am seriously looking at them for protein

The knife was not used, apart to cut some marzipan to go with the chocolate (gone before the picture could be taken).
I needed the sugar boost to survive the next 48 hours of craziness.   :D
BTW, chocolat lovers, the rule of thumb is : the darker, the better. The percentage of cacao translates the proportion of yumminess.
