I like that very much, I have asked the lovely lady in my life to have the picnic set as my birthday present.....I won't get it....but my fingers are crossed

DAY 8

A simple life today in the office, rewriting licences to have some sane meaning.....why is nothing ever to the point.

I have a lovely sourdough olive bread, and a small pot of houmous, the 30 year old No 7 helped....all I need is a bottle of red wine and some French dry cured sausage....

.....behind me the team is eating fried chicken and chips.....I feel I have the better option

Day 8

A No8 for the eighth day of the challenge.

The Blue colorama was one of my first opines!

A wet 49 F here today,  damp weather makes it feel colder.  Office work for me, but daydreaming biking through rural countryside inspecting barn styles.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

A few round styles in my area, one now a Winery, Round Barn Winery in SW Michigan.  No place(corners) for the Devil to hide!

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Day 8

Tied a Paracord Lanyard on the new knife today. After carrying the knife for a day. The existing leather lanyard was a no go for me. So during lunch today, I removed it and slightly opened up the lanyard hole on the knife. I started at 9/64 and worked my way up to 11/64. Pro tip, drill only half way and stop, the flip the knife over and drill the other side. When done, I hand chamfered the hole with a slightly larger bit. Just a little, to get the paracord to thread. Let me know what you think. This is my first time tieing a knife lanyard. I think it came out ok, so will leave it for now. The pattern on the paracord is called Deadpool. I am thinking about adding a titanium cord end.

I too prefer paracord lanyards.  Instead of drilling I may try some smaller (325 or 275) cord, depending on what I have.

It is a nice balance between spork and full size set of flatware

I know the disappointment.  It seems like they are trying to ruin all our fun between pull tabs on cans, twist off bottle caps and screw top wine bottles.

The corkscrew has a particularly satisfying click as it opens and closes, perfect picnic or party knife, I’m sure you’ll not regret getting one BPR

:iagree: with both of you :tu:

I’ve some excellent wine with screw tops, it’s become the norm here in Australia even for the top wineries but as a collector of MT’s and in the Opi case, knives with corkscrews it’s a whole lot less fun

 I’ll drink to that :drink:  :D

Day 7

The No. 10 opened a No. 12 Explore.  I’ve been incorrectly calling it the No. 12 Outdoor, but everyone knew what I meant.

The knife as it comes weighs 5.1 oz on my scale.  The tick remover tool by itself weighs 0.1 oz, the hook/lanyard loop by itself weighs 0.6 oz, and the knife without either hook/lanyard loop or tick remover weighs 4.3 oz.  (Yes, I realize these numbers don’t add up, but that’s due to the scale’s internal rounding.)

I measure the blade length from tip to handle very close to the published 4”, perhaps a hair under.  The closed knife measures about 6 1/4”.

The tick remover and hook/lanyard loop are cleverly designed to lock each other in place.  It might seem complex, but after playing with it a bit, it becomes second nature.  Unless someone requests it, I’ll skip the detailed explanation of how this works.  I’m sure there are videos on Youtube, etc.  A downside of this arrangement is that, because they rely on each other for security, one doesn’t really have the option of, say, removing the hook/lanyard loop but keeping the tick remover, or vice versa.  With nothing securing it to the main knife handle, whichever piece was carried without the other would likely be lost.  Contrast this with the approach Vic has taken with the T&T; both are secured in the handle independently, so loss of one doesn’t result in loss of the other.

Laying the Explore down next to the standard No. 10 and No. 12 (2nd & 3rd pics), what struck me was that the Explore basically has a No. 10 blade (albeit wider, thicker, and with a shorter clip) in a No. 12 size handle.

Holding the Explore, it became apparent that the top of the hook sits slightly proud of the handle (4th pic), and that this would likely create a nasty hotspot on my palm under sustained use.  To get away from this, I would have to put my first finger on the locking ring, which also isn’t ideal.  If you have small or medium size hands, you may not have this issue, but for larger size hands like mine, it’s a problem.  The other option, and probably the one I’ll go with, is to remove the hook/lanyard loop and tick remover from the knife completely, and carry the Explore without them.  Besides getting rid of the hot spot, the other advantage (as mentioned above) is weight reduction.

But even then, the stripped-down Explore still weighs 4.3 oz, while the No. 12 weighs 3.9 oz and the No. 10 weighs only 2.5 oz.

And, while I got mine at something of a discount, the Explore normally retails for like $56, while the No. 12 goes for about $27 and the No. 10 for around $22.

Ultimately, I wish I had more positive things to say about the Explore, but my initial impression is that it’s gimmicky, expensive (for an Opinel), heavy (again, for an Opinel), has ergonomic issues, and overall is a miss.  Unless one really needs the improved water resistance of the Explore’s handle (vs. the standard wood handles), I think most people would be better served by the standard No. 10 (which, again, offers the same blade length as the Explore).  However, I promise to carry and use the Explore some during this challenge, and give it a chance to change my mind.

Walking around Frankfurt. I know that Germans are also sensitive about carrying a knife so I was careful during taking the pictures :)
