Day 9

Saturday is upon me, delighted the rain has departed but 🙄 the heavy clouds have remained.  Along with cooler temps, even though not freezing🥹 which is good has many of my trees began to bud this week.

My toolset today includes a No9 and a equally capable other tool…

Nice pictures DAVID, continue to rest and keep drinking your fluids, I have been told by those that survived it is a nasty experience!

My daughter’s entire family was bitten and it even affected one of the two dogs (Great Dane).

I had my flu shot in September, earlier than normal, so I am hoping this current round is gone by end of month.

Day 9

I am really enjoying the diversity of knives on here today, the bill hook is awesome, fillet, outdoor, diy so much going on. Wishing everyone health and wellness.

I have had rain and its been in the 40s, perfect time for wet weather fire practice. My carbone 8 was excellent, I was floored by the bite it was getting in the ferro rod. Absolutely showering sparks.   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Oh, oh, oh… a Blue DIY.   :woohoo:

Adam5 said he saw one!   I thought he saw a Grey in bad light.

So cool BLUE is a real option 😢 some time ago I bet!

Day 8
Opened some garlic powder.

Day 9
Dissolvable Tylenol is such a great creation, but can imagine the packaging frustrating people who don’t carry a knife or scissors of some sort for opening.

Yes,  it is used for the No9

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Arrived flat, treated with mineral oil, and allowed to dry with Opinel inserted.  I picked up on Amazon, and repeated  for the other two.  Also, holds my Sod Buster (large) nicely.

Nice try, but I recognize a model without the locking ring when I see one.  I’m guessing it is really a No. 2.

Still a good-looking waffle, though.  I bet it was delicious.

Day 9: I love the grip on my Explore!  It has a solid, non slip feel to it.  I wish it had the tick puller like yours Nate!
Hey Barry!  Other than loving the grip and wishing it had the tick puller, how do you like it?  Have you carried/used it much?

I have asked Opinel USA whether the fire steel and tick puller are fully interchangeable.  If they respond in the affirmative, you can PM me your address and I’ll send you the tick puller.  My only chance of using the knife is without the tick puller, and I’ve always got a Tick Key or two on me anyway.

Thanks for the review and measurements, nate. It looks like the only one that doesn't really match up is the 9 DIY, which is about a centimeter shorter on the blade and 3 on the handle than advertised.

Day 9

I posted a brief preview of this on Day 0, but here's my finished (for now) Olive Wood No 9 Carve Your Own .

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

After taking a bit too much off the "fish tail" the blade tip was sitting a little proud. I elected to file it down a bit, and decided that as long as I was doing that I should tweak the shape a little too. I have a few older knives that could use a shape, but this was much more replaceable to practice on. I was going for a spey, but the thin belly makes it seem a bit closer to a reverse tanto. I also filed in  some finger grooves for more grip and easier access to the nail nick.

I did most of the carving with my No 7, the filing with a set of Nicholson smurf files, and put some cutting board rub on it, which had the added bonus of darkening the wood a bit.

Even with my initial mistake, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Definitely the most fun (and involved) crafty project I've undertaken in a while. Part of me wants to trim a cm or so off the butt and part of me likes it. We'll see how it goes after I carry it for a while I guess.
