Opinel '24 Day 11
In office casual for the next 7 days instead of my Renaissance festival kit and kilt so I decided to use this belt pouch for phone, pens, and Opinel No 8.  Office casual is about the only manner of dress where I wear a belt pouch because I'm a bit of a wide load and I don't need anything extra on my belt to hang up on every obstacle.  Already, this evening, I discovered the pouch was not on my belt and ran outside in a cold sweat thinking it was lost.  I found it outside of the truck, apparently pulled off when I released my seat belt.  Don't worry, I'll be used to a belt pouch again just about the time I'll no longer need it.

I have two, a No8 and a No6, both label Walnut.  The wood grain on the No6 is tight, and have thought it could be any wood and just STAIN walnut.  The No8’s wood grain is tight, yet longer.  Side by side you can see the difference in stain and if you enlarge you may may out the grain.

Oak will have and open grain wood, with darker streaks off long grain.  Before staining OAK must be sealed, otherwise it will get blotchy.  If done properly it should have a golden hue.  Yours appears to have golden red tint, very possible  barrel Oak.  It just looks as it belongs to Royality. 👍
It did seem to have a reddish tinge to it along the dark lines, before I cleaned and oiled it after shaving off the hump from the back of the handle.  Not royalty, just me.

The blade on the No. 12 is listed at 4.82”, and I measure it at about 4 3/4”.  This makes it a large folder by pretty much any reasonable definition.

However, I would bet that almost all of us have at least one kitchen knife with a longer blade, and many of us have outdoor fixed blades that are about this size or longer.

My opinion, based on limited experience with it thus far, is that it is actually the size of the handle, much more than the size of the blade, that makes the No. 12 somewhat awkward/unwieldy to use.

Top to bottom:  Buck 119, Opinel No. 12, Mora Garberg, Opinel No. 8
:iagree:

I find the handle awkward too nate

Good points, it really is the handle that makes it seem absurd. Now you got me considering one as a camp chef knife.

Day 11

The No. 12 Explore opened a multi-pack of tissues.

I realized that I like the blade shape on this knife even better than the standard Opinel blade shape, and that this is because having the point closer to the mid-line of the blade, as opposed to in line with or above the spine, makes it easier to drive the point through things.

This one bright spot, however, does not make up for all of the previously discussed issues with this knife.

DAY 12

So I decided I need a new wallet, unfortunately there is nothing suitable for my tastes available.....plus I don't want to spend silly money.

So decided to make one from old sofa leather, it's working progress...the Two old No8 carbon blades helped.

Got these in the mail yesterday. This Opinel No. 8 is so simple yet so elegant. It's like a giant scalpel

Day 12

Got my trusty PST II and oak no. 8 with me today. Hope to get some action with the no.8 later today. At the very least it will be assisting me with some food prep with dinner. We will be doing pork chops, roasted potatoes and carrots. Hopefully, we will get a nice Pinot to go with it.

Day 12

The mighty No. 12 made quick work of freeing this flashlight diffuser from its packaging.

The largest of the standard Opinel line (not counting the giant No. 13, which even Opinel admits is more of a gimmick or novelty item than a practical EDC), the No. 12 is 6 1/4” closed and has a 4 3/4” blade.

It’s a large folder, but not cartoonishly so IMO.  As discussed earlier in this thread, the larger-than-average handle is somewhat awkward to use, but I’m getting more used to it as I play with the No. 12.

At 3.9 oz, the No. 12 is on the lighter end for blades of this size.

Ultimately, the No. 12 is somewhat bulkier than I prefer to carry, and the handle ergonomics aren’t necessarily ideal; but when wood is used for the handle and the handle has to be large enough to accommodate a 4.75” blade folding into it, certain trade offs have to be made.  However, if one is in the market for an inexpensive folder that could handle some serious food prep, the No. 12 is worth a look.

I love that slim handled one.

I tried to put a brass tube in the handle for a lanyard about 25 years ago.... maybe longer, I damaged the handle and reshaped.....it's only until loop cutter pointed out that opinel have the garden knife that looks similar I realized it's been done!   :ahhh

Secretly opinel have been watching me and stealing my designs.

You will have to drill a hole for a key ring attachment!  That does look small but larger than a SAK classic.  So more practical!👍
