Possible QC Issue or Normal?
on: May 06, 2023, 09:57:08 PM
Hello,

Just yesterday I got my first (so far) Spirit MX Clip in the mail. While playing around with it and testing it I noticed the pliers head is a little loose. The tool doesn't cut stranded wire or plastic tubing very nicely. I have to snip down on either material pretty quickly and then give it a slight twist in order to complete the cut. Is this normal? The play in the pliers is about .25-.5mm roughly. Its not a ton, but I had a similar issue on a Leatherman Skeletool before that also yielded a poor cut. That one had to go back for warranty work. I've had about 6-7 Victorinox knives before and the quality was always impeccable. Just curious what everyone else's experience has been. Thanks.

Welcome to  :MTO: jmt1769  :hatsoff:

I have two Spirit X, and although the pliers pivots do not feel loose, both do not cut stranded wire well  :dunno:

Yeah, I think the design of the cutters may not be the best. Seems like they should have made each side of the cutters a little longer and got ride of the the notch that holds the wire. That seems to be contributing to the incomplete cut as well. Other than that, the ergonomics are fantastic. I emailed Victorinox last night, but it was late, so I don't expect to hear from them until Monday or so. Whether they replace the MT or not, I still like it and plan on using it as my primary tool. Plies aside, it's the nicest multi tool I've owned.

They are beautiful, and actually extremely rugged too.

Well, I'm sending it in tomorrow on warranty. I made the mistake of using it over the weekend and at work today, and I've fallen in love with it. :'( I hope Victorinox here in the U.S. is faster than Leatherman. Took me a month and a half to get a tool back from them. Though I don't think anyone could be as slow as Gerber is right now. It took them 3 months to mail me a button lock assembly for an MP600. It would be nice to have it back before I go on vacation next month, but I'm not optimistic.

I'm curious. I've looked around the forum a little at other people's experiences with Vic's warranty service. It seems mostly positive with a couple mishaps here and there. I've seen a few posts of people sending back Swiss Tools and my question is, how long are these lasting before having to send them in? Plier issues seem to be the culprit in most of the cases I've read, if not all. How many years are you guys getting out of the plier heads? I'm fairly analytical, so this would be very interesting feedback to acquire. Thanks

I received my Spirit MX 2 days ago and it had the same "issue" the pliers are a little loose (0.5-1mm). I visited the local authorized service center and they told me that there is no issue but we will keep an eye on it. I guess it is something that is common on the newer Spirit models because I am seeing quite a few threads reporting similar problem. Did you had any success with the victorinox service? Is there a way to fix the wobble (hammer the pivot?) or it is something that we ll have to learn to live with?
