Regular Run Companion?

Has there been any discussion about the Companion becoming a regular run rather than just a special edition? Frankly I can't see Victorinox investing in a new tool only to release it on one special edition. Maybe more releases are to come? Personally I feel like a Companion with Plus scales would be a pretty solid EDC choice. (I'd swap out the screwdriver for the Phillips drivers, but I know I'm probably in the minority there.)

I’m with you on this one, including replacing the corkscrew. However, I’d replace the file with the small blade. Basically a Supertinker with the box cutter.

I definitely like the addition of the file. I think I like that change more than the addition of the package opener.

I have to think we will see a standard Cellidor version of the Companion sometime pretty soon. I agree that it seems unlikely that Victorinox would spend the money on the development and manufacture of an entirely new tool for a SAK and then only put it on a limited run special edition knife.

But... who knows?

I hope they issue a celidor Companion.  When I think of how many times over the past year I have used a SAK to open a can - I think it's once: I tried using a combo tool to open a can, just to see how well it worked.  I have certainly opened many a can with SAKs over the years.  I haven't gone camping in ages and at home I just use a nice smooth rotary opener that lives in a drawer in the kitchen.  It isn't dead yet but the age of metal cans opened by a can opener is possibly drawing to a close?  But over the past year I have opened a ton of packages with blister packaging or that required getting through some plastic.  I hate blister packaging but we seem to be in the age of it.  The new tool seems to fit this time period.  Most of us here have quite a few SAKs with the regular opener layer.  But so far few of us own one with the new tool and the inclusion of a file just makes it that much better from my pov.

Sure seems that way. Though I have a dedicated can opener in the kitchen, I'm much more used to grabbing the multi that I'm carrying. If the multi can get purchase on the can, that's how the can is opened. So the can opener is still relevant for me. But maybe this newfangled opener deal could work out okay...especially if they'd pair it with a combo tool in place of the cap lifter.

A combo tool that is redesigned to be as thick as the opener layer and replace the cap lifter has always seemed like a cool idea. Not that vic would do it, but then it could be paired with the electricians blade which creates one layer with massive utility.

Unless it would be paired with the new package opener as FX suggests, I’m not sure I understand the advantage of this vs. existing configurations.

If you’re looking for a single-layer knife that contains a knife blade and a combo tool, you have options like the Bantam and Waiter.

If you’re going to two layers, what would the second layer be?  Compact and Walker are already options.  If you want two blades plus the ability to open bottles and cans, you have the Spartan, Tinker, Pioneer, etc.

I don’t know, you do make a good point. I was thinking about knives like the 93mm electrician, with a thicker combo tool it would add can opening to its capabilities. I guess it is really covered by some of the models but I kind of like the idea of an electricians blade -  thick combo tool because it would be more balanced between the tools. With the big blade and combo tool layer you have more blade and less opener/prying/screwing.
