Wooden Scale Longevity
on: May 17, 2023, 09:05:24 PM
I've done some searching and have only found a bit of info regarding wood scales and their durability. I'm aware of the unique limitations and properties of wooden scales, but how do they stay in place vs their cellidor counterparts? Are the still press-fit? I saw that they might be glued or taped, can anyone confirm this? Any issues with them coming off over time? I'm looking at getting a Companion, and while it won't be abused I'd like to carry it in-pocket daily without too much concern about the scales falling off with regular use. Also, I'm assuming the construction is the same beneath the scales, so if I did have any issues I could always pop on a pair of cellidor scales, correct? Thanks!

I've been wondering about this too. How is the wood on your Companion. On mine the scales feel almost brittle. I oiled them and that helped a little, but I would still be a little worried about damaging them.

I don't actually have one, yet. I'm trying to gather some information before I decide.

I have a wood - handled Spartan, Evo-wood 10, and 14.   I used some beeswax on them they look better for that - grain stands out.  They seem quite sturdy to me and I suspect they will last just as long as a celidor scale.  The only reservation I have about them is water exposure.  The wax will help some but prolonged exposure to water or very high humidity could cause problems.  For any situation like that I will use celidor handled knives.

I have a few wood handled models, but haven’t carried them much.

I haven’t taken one apart, but I think it a safe bet that the wood scales have to be glued on.  Unlike cellidor or nylon, the material properties of wood don’t lend themselves to scales that can simply be “popped” on.

I would also feel confident that the construction under the scales is the same as the cellidor models.  However, I’m not sure how easy or difficult it would be to remove all wood and any glue residue to be able to apply celldior scales.  Perhaps someone has actually taken the scales off one and can weigh in?
