This is true. Great pictures, love how clean the Bond looks :tu:

Not as clean as a PST though.

Forty years on, I think the original is still the best looking. Mini Tool is a close second.

Great pictures Alan, MrToolJunkie and Rich :tu:
Much appreciated, Poncho and Farmer :hatsoff:

Day 30

Although I am not the best at posting action pictures, I use the Surge for work every day (unless I am in another challenge). It is indeed heavy, but a sheath on an otherwise heavy tool belt is not something I notice. The truth is the Surge and the ST300 are the only tools big enough for my type of work. Before I got it, the Wave+ was my go to. After some heavy use on the pliers as well as wearing gloves, I quickly realized it was a bit too small. But that is the beauty of Leatherman, there is a tool for every occasion.

So now I am doing some much needed sharpening, as I complete this challenge as well as the last day of work before the summer break. This is the second time I host a challenge, and I am humbled by the fact that people participate or want to follow along. Thank you all for sharing these great pictures and uses. :salute:

I was installing conduit yesterday, and the Surge had to sit on the sideline while the Cobra and Dual Force were put to use:

Day 30

My last day pocket carrying this beast!  Honestly, I almost got used to lugging it around in my pocket.  I would hardly notice it when I was working around the house, but the rest of the time, it was just a little too big and a little too heavy for my pocket.  Overall, I would rate the Surge as the most badass multitool on the market, but it is just a little too much for my daily need.

Day 30

Much like nakken, I have no problem carrying the Surge during the week. And it served me well enough. Not as well as a Super Tool, but that is more due to my needs and preferences than any failings of the MT. If I needed the scissors more often then my opinion might be different, for they are a great feature.

However, I did not like carrying it around on the weekend. The robustness that helps make the Surge a good work MT makes it a bear to carry around when the expected needs are on the order of opening a toy's battery compartment or cutting open a package. I would much rather carry a Bond at those times.

Day Thirty

I’ve really enjoyed the challenge, and was pleasantly surprised that the weight of the Surge was never really an issue.

It was easy enough to carry it in a leather box sheath either in the pocket of my jeans on the belt of my work trousers.

I was a bit self-conscious wearing it openly on my belt at times, as the UK definitely doesn’t have a knife or multitool culture, but it would be perfect in winter when covered by clothing.

I’m still undecided about if I prefer the traditional tools like the Rebar and Supertool 300, the Free series, or the Surge, but it’s nice to have all of them available to choose from.

For the last picture of the challenge, the Surge with some bottles of beer I bought today, a mixture of Cherry Porter and Plum Porter. Won’t be opening one today, as I’m back on nights tonight, but maybe a breakfast beer to celebrate completing the challenge.

Thanks to nakken for organising it, and to everyone else who has taken part or dropped in.

Day 30
I used a tapered diamond honing steel to hone the serrations which I found lacking in the palm frond and coconut tests.  It might have performed better if I had sharpened it before I started the challenge.
 :twak:
Now the challenge is over and I feel as if a great weight has been taken from me.  Or that might have just been me removing the Surge from my belt.  Truth be told, I didn't mind carrying the Surge.  The sheath does a good job distributing the weight.  I agree that it is a great tool for work but it is not the best all around tool because it is simply more than what is needed most of the time.  Up for debate is if the Surge is the best heavy duty tool.  I've had my ST300 for a lot longer and I'd probably still grab it first but that might just be habit.  I need more carry time with the Surge to really find out what it can do and I'm looking forward to that in the future.

This challenge was one I followed with quite a bit of interest. Two main points were taken. One, the Surge is a beast of a multi that is best suited for heavy-duty tasks (as Adam said, probably not the best choice when the toughest task on the day's agenda is replacing batteries or package opening). Two, belt carry is probably the best way to carry a Surge. I am still giving some thought to picking up a black oxide Surge, but that can shift down a few spots on the priority list.

Thanks to awl the participants who made this a great challenge to follow, and thanks to nakken for hosting it!

Day 30

More serrated action. Probably the most uses tool for the entire challenge. It is interesting how each challenge presents different tools that are more heavily used.

I like the Surge... it is still one of my favorites. It used to hold the number one spot,  but I have become partial to Swisstool Spirits of late and they are getting more pocket time. I also really came to appreciate the Rebar during that challenge and so the Surge while still in the top,  might not be #1.

It is a super capable tool,  though.  It had all the implements I like having and I do like being able to adjust the tool for the task at hand. Need a file, no problem. Need a metal saw blade,  easy.  Need a torx 20 bit, Surge can handle it. It is heavy,  but the pocket clip makes pocket carry manageable and my preferred way as I do not like belt pouches of any kind.

This has been a great challenge and I am glad I was able to participate. Enjoyed all the pics and examples from everyone.  Thank you!!
