I've been carrying it with a single blade folder to minimize cheating. I generally rate a serrated blade as the least useful of the five "long" implements. I might be willing to trade smaller scissors if I could get it. That seems like it should be doable. How much smaller are the 58mm scissors?

My bad, I type SE, (for straight edge), when I  intended to type PE (for plain edge)

IMHO a MT with both a PE and SE blade improves functionality, unfortunately one of three implements are lost, file, saw or scissors, what to give up?

I do luv the Victorinox Serrated blades, stay sharp like forever. I have a combo blade on a OHT, a Spartan SE, and this Butterblade model Spirit.
That's a tough call.  If you are going for both SE and PE, the MXBS would be a pretty decent choice(dual wing for two diff blades), but it does not come with a file.  Personally, I am a PE fan, so MX is naturally a good choice for me.

Yeah - I have considered getting a serrated Spartan (still available in the secondary market for reasonable cost) and combine with the MX clip or regular Spirit with the plain edge. Right now the Butter Blade and other Vic are pairing well. I have a Swiss Tool with the serrated blade and no scissors and 2 "S" versions in addition to my BB version - so have the serrated option. They are sharp and stay that way a loooong time. Easy enough to sharpen too when the time comes. What I dislike about the BO versions with OHO is that you lose the saw - which is also an important implement - so if I carry one of those, I need to pair it with another SAK with a saw...

Day 12

Used the saw to trim a small branch which reminded me, it’s one of the few tools on the Spirit I don’t find as good as the SAK or LM version. The scissors being the other but they are great for thicker materials so compliment  SAK scissors well (LM scissors are so varied it depends on model)

Contentious and don’t expect everyone to agree, YMMV etc, but I’ve made the same observation in a previous challenge

I’m not sure if the teeth aren’t as aggressive or because it’s ever so slightly thicker but takes more effort imo

After cutting the branch with the spirit I tried with both a huntsman and a rebar and found both easier

I did a whole bunch of tests (IIRC, I used each saw 12 times sawing the same material, I remembered it took me many hours to collect all the data and footages) when I compared different saws from different MTs and SAKs many years ago, if there's one thing I've learnt is every tool has a steep learning curve and it does take some practice to gain proficiency with the saw.  Also, if the sawing time needed deviate a lot (I tried to quantify it as standard deviation in the tests), then it probably has something to do with the saw design/ergonomics/how easy to use the saw.

Anyhow, here are the two videos, the conclusions towards the end of the video:

The inline awl.  Probably one of the most usable awls on the market. Much easier to use than the backside awl on the knife based tools.

Fantastic work comis, these are great :hatsoff: your arm must’ve been aching after all that!

Interesting results, I was surprised the Swiss Champ came out on top of the 91’s and also they the Farmer was some way behind, would seem an ergonomic issue as you surmise

Of the PBMT’s I’ve always found the Wave a bit uncomfortable and the Rebar much better, something borne out by your testing

I’m only cutting small branches in the garden rather than blocks of wood and will get the Bahco Laplander out for anything bigger but I think material also comes into play. I was a bit surprised the Spirit did as well as it did tbh, but as you say, practice and technique are important

For a grab and go MT I’d favour a 111mm Vic over any of them (again borne out in your testing) with probably a smaller SAK or the Rebar next. I like the Rebar saw a lot , but that’s the ergonomics again I’m sure

Anyway really enjoyed your videos mate :tu:

I agree with you comparing to backside SAK awl😉

The Rebar awl is very functional too!

The Spirit’s AWL is narrower allowing for a smaller hole.  Still for me it along with Multi function chisel tool, great implements on the Spirit👍
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Day 13
Friday the 13th🤫

Today my second morning of Spirit study.  This time other handle’s assortment.

Scissors are the most unique, different than any I experienced on my SAKs so equipped,  the Spirit’s  thickness allows me better control and scissors are easier for my paws to control, yet not a tool I use often enough😉

Yes, mine are silver.  I think the first one I got was black, via military contract surplus.

Not knowing whether this will be made into regular model, I got one when the silver starts to show up.

Little did I know couple months later, MX would become a regular and I was so happy to finally see a OH Spirit being offered.  Earnestly, this might as well be the be-all end-all MT for me.

I wasn't the biggest fan for the Spirit scissors, since I have grown so accustomed to the 91mm scissors over the years.

But after reading posts and comments from everyone here, I started seeing this as shears and everything starts to make sense.

The woodwork friendly chisel, leather punching awl, it would make sense to include a 'scissors' that's more heavy duty in this package for functionality.

For the US Navy’s Birthday and Friday the 13th, I had a lazy day enjoying the outdoors.  The Spirit did open a box and help with outdoor coffee making, but that was about it.

Day 13

Finally got around to moving tip kits after repositioning the pantry for our dishwasher install. Thankfully our kids  aren’t climbers…yet.

Pliers and Phillips to detach and reattach the hardware. Awl for pilot home on new wall.

Also opened a package for my wife with the awl to give it a try. Well, sort of worked on the thick tape. The awl on the Spirit is a bit dull at the tip, so had to redo at points with the package opener tip.  I think I opened mail with the spear point blade, but honestly can’t remember if that was yesterday or today  :ahhh.

Last but not least scissors opened probiotic pouches and popsicles for the kiddos.

Had little chance or forgot to get action shots today,

Pliers x6
Saw x2
Spear point blade x5
Phillips x5
Pry bar x4
2mm flathead x1
Wire cutters x1
Package opener x4
Wire scraper x1
Wire stripper x1
Awl x2
