It's not often that the perfect anything come along, but I think I have a pretty good contender here- the be all, end all axe.

Better pics soon, but I really needed to share this with some people who I knew would appreciate it like I do

My neighbor who is downsizing gave Megan a bunch of gardening stuff yesterday and he handed me this absolutely stunning Estwing camp axe, with the old tooled leather sheath.

I believe these now come with a nylon sheath?

The balance on this is amazing!  I'm not sure I've ever held a better feeling axe, and I am very much looking forward to using it.

Anyone else have one of these?

I have one, except mine is the standard version and yours is the long-handled version.

It is an excellent small axe.

Mine is probably 8-10 years old, so I got the leather sheath but it doesn’t have the neat design.  You’re correct that they now come with blue nylon sheaths.

My father has the old version of that hatchet with the stacked leather handle.  I hope to inherit it someday, long in the future.  My father and I have both been given stitches by that hatchet, which makes it a heck of an heirloom!   :ahhh

I'm really excited to play with this one.

Nice one Def.  Not really the camp axe,  that's a big'n.  Love Estwing for thier forged one piece made in USA designs.

I have the camp axe with stacked leather handle and unfortunately have beat the smurf out of it.  I'll pi k up another to stay in the workshop

On my recent visit home I managed to get the old Estwing hatchet from my father.  Unfortunately he had misplaced in in the woods around his house for a while and when he found it again (years went by) much of the leather handle has rotted away.

As soon as I can figure out how to remove and replace the butt cap without damaging anything I will be ordering some new leather washers and rebuilding it, adding to it's appeal as a family piece even more.

For those that don't know the story of that hatchet, my father slipped while cutting kindling when I was very young and came dangerously close to lopping his fingers off with it.  Several stitches later we had a quiet night in the trailer.

Then a few years later, I was playing with it and introduced it to my shin bone.

This hatchet has blood bonded with both myself and my father, and soon will have a new handle by me.

It doesn't come much more heirloom-y than that!

Y-yikes!  Once they taste blood...

Had mine with us up in a log cabin on the Ellis River in NH a couple years ago.  Went outside to -like your father, cut up some kindling...bloodied my hand pretty good.  But I've seen worse, so I gather the kindling and the hatchet to go back into the cabin.

I didnt realise the picture I was to those sitting calmly by the fire as I kicked open the front door with a bloody hatchet in my hand in the dead of night.  Raaarr!
