Hunstman! ... Is it just me?
on: September 05, 2023, 09:23:14 PM
Don't know if anyone else thinks the same but ...

As much as I think the Hunstman is brilliant - I have had cause to use every single one of the tools on more than one occasion (yes! the corkscrew as an actual real corkscrew) and even the hook on 3 occasions! (twice for grabbing the rubber fixing thingy of by bicycle light when fitting to my cycling helmet and also for pulling stubborn tent pegs)

BUT - I really think the scissors/hook layer and the saw layer would be better swapped so you would have blade/corkscrew layer, then scissors/hook layer, then saw layer, then openers/corkscrew layer

As it is, the hook is really snug up against the keyring and sometimes quite difficult to open and also partly obscures access to the awl nail nick
If the scissors/hook layer and saw layer were switched over then the hook would be easier to get at and also the awl would have better acess to

Anyone any thoughts?

The hook needs a rethink.  I can't open it on these knives.  I have to use another tool to pry it up.  I will admit that I never use it, however.  Welcome to the shop.  Best wishes.  Gary

Same here. I have to use something else to open, although as I have said, I have had reason to use it a few times and it is an excellent tent peg puller

The Explorer has a much more sensible placement with the scissors/hook layer next to the blade/corkscrew layer on the opposite side to the keyring and has much better access

Be nice if Victorinox read this forum .... and decided to make some design changes ... and then sent me a prototype for evaluation  :D

Geezz guys...,

I know it's not the easiest tool to open on the SAK, but needing another tool to open it?
The Climber is even less accessible then on the Huntsman and i never had any trouble opening it, even if it takes a bit of digging with your thumb nail

Makes sense now.  ;)  I do notice that it's more difficult to open when I've just trimmed my nails.

Ahah.....

Well, a good solution is "don't bite your nails"

I always trim my thumb nails just a touch longer because of the SAK's

You have to go in with your fingernail perpendicular to the knife and then pivot, using the keyring anchor as a brace if you like, to create a digging motion that just whips the hook right out.

I understand where you’re coming from, but have to admit I’ve never had a problem with the existing configuration, whether opening the hook or awl.

If you chew your nails, maybe reserve one nail, such as the left thumbnail, for SAKs.  Whenever you feel the urge to chew nails, avoid that one.  Keep it medium short and well manicured.  Who knows maybe over time you can add a finger or two now and then to the clipper and file routine and eventually stop biting?

Yes, i see a lot of people complaining about the Awl being difficult to open, and never understood that. The Awl to me is probably the easiest too to open on the 84/91mm's. I play round with it all the time.
It just depends on "how" you open it. You don't "pull" it open, you just "flick" it open.

I don't have any problem opening any tool...

It’s not just you! I agree that the Huntsman would be a little better with the saw and scissors layer swapped.

For one thing, it would get the hook away from the key ring. The easiest SAK to open the hook on that I have is my Explorer where the scissors are not right next to the key ring.

But also, the scissors themselves would be just a little easier to open if the nail nick wasn’t hiding behind my beloved wood saw…

Grinding off the lug for the key ring is another option.

For whatever it's worth, I don't think I've ever had any issues deploying the back layer tools. The same cannot be said with closing them; I've caught them on the key ring more than once.

You could always follow White Glove Reviews' approach and use a Victorinox Watch Case Opener to flick all the tools open....
