Sowbelly vs Sodbuster
on:
November 01, 2023, 01:44:39 PM
Case has their single blade Sowbelly back out. Overall, it's very close in size to their smaller Sodbuster, which I enjoy carrying sometimes. Blade/handle lengths are about 1/10" different. Officially, the Soddy has a skinner and the Sowbelly has a clip, but they both hew "thicker" and almost towards drops compared to most examples of their types. The biggest difference is the curved sowbelly handle.
Anybody have both and want to compare which they like better? Trying to decide if it's worth picking one up.

Don't have a single blade sowbelly but IMO the Sodbuster Jr is a joy to carry.

I have a 3-blade Sowbelly, and a few Sodbusters. If I recall correctly, my Sowbelly has black, synthetic pants which look pretty sharp. I think the differences are more aesthetic than anything, really. I do like the look of the Sowbelly, which is really unlike just about any other traditional knife. We all vote for you getting a Sowbelly!

@BpRoberts - I have several Sod Busters. The synthetic Sod Busters are thicker than the Bone Handle versions of the Soddies.
I do have single blade Stockman style clip point blade and also a couple two blade models by Buck.
The Sowbellly single will be thinner, but will have a handle easier to hold, due to the curve.
To me the blade style will be the factor to evaluate. I like the drop point blade overall for my primary cutting chores.
The clip point is versatile blade great for hunting, whittling, carving and slicing.
Pick the knife for its blade and purpose first.
Handle and fit is secondary.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!
Hope yours is as good!

I found a good (but slow) deal on one, so I'll get some comparison pics and report in...eventually.

Here are a comparison of a Soddie Jr and Sowbelly I have. I love the Sodbuster Jr and really like the Sowbelly. They are similar in size, but there are a few distinct differences other than just the blade shape that for me gives the edge to the Soddie.
The inside curve on both knife handles is similar but the outside edge of the handle and the additional thickness of the Soddie give them different feel in the hand. The overall geometry of the knives are different as well, which impacts the angle for cutting. The Soddie blade belly is straighter and comes to less of a distinct point while the Sowbelly has a slightly curved belly and more stabbie point.
I hope those help.

On the minus side, not a sowbelly. On the plus side, not a bad little knife, and I got a good deal. Currently messaging with the seller. I'll keep you all posted.

Definitely not a Sowbelly but thats a great little knife. The Swayback is one of my favorite little Case knives.

Love the blade angle on CASE's Seahorse Whistler's and the Swaybacks. The angle is really nice for whittling.

Finally got the sowbelly in this weekend. Top to bottom:
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
1. Full size sodbuster
2. Sodbuster Jr
3. Sowbelly
4. Swayback
5. 47 Stockman
6. Spirit (for challenge purposes)
The full size soddy never really clicked for me. I don't really need that much knife day to day, and when I do, I'd rather have something modern. Or at least locking.
It's interesting to see how much more pronounced the skinner tip on the jr is than the full size. It's almost veering into spey territory on the jr, while the full size is close to straight. I need to look at the jr when I get home, because it almost looks damaged in that pic, but I don't have it with me.
The sowbelly's blade is a smidge shorter than the jr, but the extra handle length pushes it ahead overall. Not sure which I prefer, gonna carry it for a while to see. I think I prefer the blade shape of it, but the handle of the jr.
Swayback is a little smaller than I like, but I love the shape. Glad I got it by accident.
Spirit is a great PBMT to pair with a small trad folder. Having a more traditional blade to compliment the butter blade is great.

Sowbelly rode in my pocket and had an interesting day yesterday.
Unbeknownst to me, it's appartently now my job to carve the turkey. I've done it once or twice over the years, but not enough to consider it my "thing." But dad wasn't getting out of his recliner, and we were hungry, so off I went.
If I'd known I was carving, I'd a. have looked up how to do it (it's been at least a year, maybe two) and b. made sure they had a sharp knife on hand (or brought a sharpener with me). Instead, I stood in the kitchen with my choice of 3 or 4 glorified butterknives and basically shredded the breast (the drumsticks popped right off, which helped a lot). I got enough on the platter for everyone to eat, and stopped.
After dinner, I walked back into the kitchen to break down the thighs, etc. for leftovers. I figured I couldn't do any worse than the carving knives, so I gave the sowbelly a quick wash and went to work.

Would a bigger knife have been better? Yes.
Was it much better than trying to use a chef's knife that could barely slice jello? Yes.
This is probably the closest I'll ever get to a "dressing a buck with my pocket knife" story. Not quite as dramatic, but fun anyway.

I only have the three blade soberly, and it's a very comfortable knife to carry, but I'll always have a soft spot for the sodbuster Jr as it was the first case I ever bought, still to this day one of my all time favorite patterns

Nice work BPR. I always take a knife when going to anyone home for dinner and I'm not talking my typical carry. I also love to use whatever knife is in my pocket. I carried a #6 Opinel that helped me prep for a dinner at a friends home. Their knives were as you said, barely sharp enough to cut jello.
Great way to get to know your new knife

Late to the discussion…
Had the same experience at my daughter’s, not a sharp blade in the knife block, not a even the steak knives🙄
I did have my Buck 112, slim select pro in my pocket, but before I pulled it out, I grabbed the chef knife, a coffee cup from the cupboard, inverted the the cup and ran the edge of the blade along the cup’s bottom that is not glazed. About 25 passes on each side, th n used a cardboard box to strop the blade. Not hair cutting sharp but good enough to carve the bird. Slice through joints. Even sharp enough my son n law cut himself checking the blade after I was done and he wiped it down to clean before sliced squash 😁
Guess what he get for Christmas😊 + instructions.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!
Hope yours is as good!
