3 days in, all I've got that's like a SAK would be my Armbars. Too late to hop in? How would I go about the days I miss?

Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk

I am very conifident that BPRoberts will agree. Absolutely not too late,,,, come on in. I am a day late myself. I will be a day behind in finishing, you will be a couple more. Happens quite frequently actually.  Now let's see that Armbar!

If you can manage two posts a day on a few of the days, you can catch up.

This usually happens to me several times during the course of a challenge, i.e.I get busy for a day and don’t get a post in, then I might do one post per day for a few days and be a day behind, and then get two posts in on one day and catch up, at least for the moment.

Day 3

The Vulpis scissors are quite similar in design and appearance to Vic scissors, which gave me high hopes for their performance.

I’ll spare you all any close up action shots, but I attempted to use the Vulpis scissors for some personal grooming tasks today.

They did a reasonable job trimming my fingernails.

However, when it came to trimming my mustache, I’m disappointed to report they were a total failure.   They would leave the hair bent/kinked, but seemed unable to cut it.  My suspicion is that this isn’t an issue of sharpness; rather, I believe the tolerances simply aren’t tight enough to reliably handle materials that are both thin and flexible.

The scissors have fallen significantly short of expectations, as the ability to trim an errant hair or thread are some of the most common tasks for EDC/MT scissors in my experience.

Smoked boudin and crawfish/shrimp etouffee. Used the T2 to open some packaging.

I love boudin. Our neighbor goes a couple of times a year as she has family there and always brings us some.

Day 3

Nothing to report today as I had to drive out of town for a funeral.  Here's a glamour shot though.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Hop on in! Like the others said, you can double up a couple days if you need to. Be good to see an Armbar, I feel like that covers our bases for most of the "major" modern SAK-style tools.

Day 4

Today I decided to try out the can opener on the Vulpis.  As may be seen in the pic, the can opener is designed to be used right-handed and worked clockwise around the can (or the can rotated counter-clockwise), like the Vic combo tool or Wenger claw-style can opener.

The Vulpis can opener also has a small flat screwdriver on the end.  More on this in a future post.

I retrieved a can of olives from the pantry and set to work.  Compared to the standard Vic can opener (my most used MT can opener), I was forced to take much smaller “bites” at the can, and progress was correspondingly slow.  It also left a wickedly jagged edge on the can lid, though in my experience this is common with MT can openers.

Ultimately, while I believe the Vic can opener is more efficient, I was able to open a can with the Vulpis can opener, so it passes this test.

Good to know.  I had seen this SAKalike and thought about getting another as a more compact alternative to a Pioneer X.  Seems like it's not quite an adequate option

Day 5

Opened a package with the chisel.   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

They almost match!  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Chisel was ok. I think I like the one on the Spirit better, but Vic hasn't put this on a knife platform yet.

Package duty today for my SAK-A-Like.  I suspect that it'll be doing this more and more until Christmas passes.  Need to find more exiting things for it to do.

Day 5

Used the scissors and file to trim my nails. I've started staggering and doing one hand one week, and the other a week or two later so I always have nails. It's convenient. Overall performance was ok. Scissors were little unwieldy compared to Vic's and the file is clearly designed more as a tool file than a nail file, but definitely useable.

Ok, 4 days late and a dollar short:

DAY 1

Carried the Armbars (OG) today but didn't see any action. Rheumatologist appt and some shopping. Should have used the Armbar to cut my wife's sandwich for lunch but said she wanted a real knife (sorry Armbar).

“But I AM a real knife!” sniffed the Armbar.

Day 5

My SAK-A-Like got some work in today.  It helped me assemble my daughter's longboard.  The awl pushed through the grip tape so the bolts could go in, and the wrench held on to the nuts while I screwed the bolts in.  I wonder if it will also be able to help me cut the wrapping paper...

Day 5

I’m pleased to report that the bottle opener on the Vulpis performed its function well.

It seemed slightly persnickety about the angle of approach to the bottle cap being just right, but I feel like this is fairly common for MT bottle openers.  Once the angle was correct, it removed the bottle cap in one smooth motion.

The bottle opener also has a slightly larger flathead screwdriver on the end, which will be addressed in a future post.

Day 2

Used the Armbar to help separate poorly perforated signs and cut tape without a dispenser to hang them for Ad break today. When life gives you lemons, use the Armbar because I've got lemons and they didn't help.

Day 6

Wore this goofy Christmas suit to work today, and didn't carry the T4 due to tiny pockets. Thought it would be a no use day, but found a loose thread on the suit when I was putting it away. Scissors took care of it.

Day 6

The Vulpis has two flat screwdrivers:  a smaller one on the tip of the can opener and a slightly larger one on the tip of the bottle opener.  Both are beveled.

The one on the tip of the Vulpis can opener is slightly larger than the screwdriver on the Vic can opener, and appears to be sized for #2 Philips screws.

I’m unsure what the sizing criteria were for the larger driver, but it is considerably smaller than the Vic large screwdriver.

While I feel this set of screwdrivers is less versatile than the standard Vic opener layer, they had no trouble turning any screws that they fit.

Day 7

This dollar store Christmas light headband was being a little flaky. Saw a screw on it and figure I'd see if I could spot a loose wire or anything fixable. I had my doubts but the awl-driver handled it fine. Gave it the ol' wriggle and everything seems fine now.

Day 7

Had package duty again, as I foresaw.

I knew I was taking a gamble getting the SwissQlip as I had heard positive and negative reviews but I am actually disappointed with it.  I felt they could've put a bit more effort into it as it can block some back tools, and it can make the layer tool difficult to open.  I thought about returning it but I'm thinking of trying to mod it a bit or perhaps use it to model something up for my 3D printer and see if I can make it better for my purposes.  I like the idea, it just needs better execution.
