Actually, there's really not that much pure Latin or Greek left in the English language. It's about 1/3 old Germanic in origin, and all manner of influences from various invading forces including French (especially ridiculous spellings), Danish etc. Modern English is a widely different variant of the ancient Anglo-Saxon upon it was mostly based, and still includes rarely used and extinct dialects from older Celtic origins. We also now have a wonderful multi-cultural influence which has brought common place words from Hebrew/Yiddish, Urdu, Punjabi to name a few to our collective language. We also have adopted (and continue to) many words and spellings from American-English... that seems to work both ways happily. You lovely Americans wouldn't know what a w*nker was without us eh?

In case you hasn't noticed, I like this subject. I find the continual evolution of Creole variants of English, really fascinating - something which is speeding up exponentially due to the cyber highway etc. Eventually, a global English might evolve which has enough commonality for everyone to at least partly understand. Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue is a great jumping off point for anyone who want sot know more.

Actually I have travelled quite extensively in the US, and lived in NYC and the midwest for a while. I like it there a lot and I would have the biggest gun down my pants (US definition boys, at ease), if I was allowed. I love shooting, found it to be very cathartic.

Yes, I like tools a lot... actually qualified as a carpenter many moons ago and have plenty of scars to prove it. That was before a long career in music followed by a medical science degree. I have been called a renaissance girl plenty of times, but mostly I just like being a Jack (or Jill) of all trades.
